The Itanium and the Opteron don't compete anymore.

That is exactly right. Opteron successfully kicked Itanium upstairs into the rarified (and low volume) high end market.

Funny, that is exactly the strategy Sanders announced at the public unveiling of Opteron a few years ago. He said something like: Opteron and Itanium do not compete. We see Itanium as a solution for the high end server market, Opteron is positioned for the volume server market.

Sanders was achieving wisdom in his latter years!
