bucket, the problem with that logic, the trades were reported to the tape and also show up as volume in the short volume report. These were not trades executed ex-clearing to avoid the settlement system, they were reported into teh market and thus thru DTCC systems and settlement.

I am still working that angle as it doesn't make sense to me either but the most logical explanation is the one you don't want to hear - dilution of shares beyond what you know as the float.
