I have said for years that I would have preferred the Yankees going with young guys rather than paying big money for veterans.

Unfortunately the Steinbrenners don't take my calls.

When A-Rod opted out and Lowell was semi available I had hoped the Yankees would have gotten him. Not that he's a young guy, but I preferred him over A-Rod.

Take a look at which Yankees have done fairly well this year.

Cano - Last year he was awful and there were a lot of trade rumors about him

Melky - He is fighting for his life and trying to get the center field job back again

Swisher - He lost the starting job to Nady in the beginning of the year and had to prove himself. Now that Nady is hurt, he will get more opportunities to start (unless he is hurt from last night) but he needed to prove himself first.

Hughes - It's only one start but I believe he has more wins this year than all of last year with the Yankees

Pena - He has only played a few games but Jeter should start to worry IMO. If not this year, next year or the year after.

Even Matsui has played better so far this year than he had been playing.

I have always thought a hungry player is a better player than one who already has a hefty contract.

Manny proved that in spades with the Red Sox
