I'm a pessimist about such things. What would be the all in costs per mile for an electric car (electricity consumption (my electric bills are quite high despite the fact that I have a natural gas furnace), battery replacement costs etc). Then of course there is the question of how one generates the electricity (if one uses coal or oil then I can't imagine the planet or any of us would be better off). I'll bet we'll be using natural gas for heating and oil for transportation until we completely exhaust those resources, then we'll go to a nuclear winter.

I think the electric car is nothing more than another marketing scheme - convince consumers they will save the planet by consuming such, thus create the demand for one of the most inefficient modes of transportant (from an overall cost perspective) available.
