Howard Golden--JANUS will drop-kick Steve Jobs and iPod into oblivion, unless Jobs embraces a portable subscription model.

Deep-six for a moment your way overrefined analytical skills, and try to locate and throw atop that high-minded head of yours that pitifully and infrequently used common-sense thinking cap, of yours.

Once your thinking cap is firmly wedged atop your head, read carefully the following excerpts:

Microsoft: New players undercut iPod price

Microsoft says some of the portable music players being developed to work with its planned music service will sell for as much as 80 percent less than Apple Computer Inc.'s iPod.

Consumer electronic companies are developing some devices that will "look and feel" as good as the iPod, said Yusuf Mehdi, corporate vice president of MSN at Microsoft Corp. Speaking at the Goldman Sachs 5th Annual Internet Conference in Las Vegas, he said some flash-based memory players will be offered that will sell for as little as $50.

Janus would add a hacker-resistant clock to portable music players for files encoded in Microsoft's proprietary Windows Media Audio format. That in turn would help let subscription services such as Napster put rented tracks on portable devices--something that's not currently allowed. Fans of portable players could then pay as little as US$10 a month for ongoing access to hundreds of thousands of songs, instead of buying song downloads one at a time for about a dollar apiece.
