Frequently Asked Questions

http://www.historicalbricks.com/faq.html

Q: Are these new bricks made to look old?
A: No. All of our brick and stone is genuine, antique, reclaimed material from cities around the country. Most bricks have the name of the original manufacturer printed on them like the Purington Pavers made by Purington Brick Co. in Galesburg, IL. Purington Brick Co. imprinted its last brick in 1974 so these products are no longer available as new products.

Q: Do you have a local distributor?
A: No. We ship nationwide direct to your jobsite. We have also contributed to international projects in Toronto, Puerto Rico, and the US Virgin Islands.

Q: How are the bricks delivered?
A: When we reclaim bricks from their resting place, they are first cleaned of any residue and then bundled into pallets of 250-500. They are hand-wrapped by our workers to ensure that they stay in place during the move and then delivered to you on flat-bed trucks.

Q: How many bricks do I need for my project?
A: The bricks are all different sizes, so the number you need depends on their use. For paving projects, such as streets, driveways, walkways or patios, you generally need five bricks per square foot. For walls, however, you typically need seven bricks per square foot.

Q: What is the lead time?
A: All of the products shown on our website are ready for immediate shipment. We appreciate a lead time of at least two weeks to arrange for trucking.

Q: Is there a minimum order?
A: You must order at least 1 pallet, or 250-500 bricks, and we prefer to ship full truckload quantities.

Q: Will these bricks last?
A: The majority of our bricks were made over 100 years ago and show very minimal wear, if any. Bricks made during this time period were dried, fired and packed by hand and made to endure hundreds of years.

Q: How much are your bricks?
A: There are several factors that change the total price of the shipment, such as the type of brick, the quantity, and your location so it is best to call or email for an accurate price quote.

Q: Where do your bricks come from?
A: Our bricks and cobblestones are reclaimed from the streets and buildings of some of the most historic cities in the U.S.

Q: Do you install these bricks?
A: No. We are strictly suppliers of the highest quality antique brick and stone in the country.

Q: Are your products "green"?
A: Yes. We are a member of the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), which rates buildings "green" status with points from the Leaders in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED). USGBC states that LEED points are given to buildings that are "healthier, have a smaller environmental footprint, use less energy, and cost less to operate." Buildings made with antique bricks satisfy all of the above.

Q: How different are historic bricks from new bricks?
A: The processes of making bricks over 100 years ago were much different than how bricks were made today. The coal-fired kilns of yesteryear allowed for some variation in color and texture. Now, most kilns are electric and do not create the same coloration effects. This and the natural aging/wear of the bricks are some of the characteristics that our clients find very attractive.

Q: Will the climate of my geographical region affect the bricks?
A: There are some antique building bricks that are perfectly suitable for use as pavers in warmer climates but not in climates where there is several freeze/thaw cycles. In some colder climates, our true antique street pavers and granite cobblestones can always be used.

Q: How and where are the bricks stored?
A: We reclaim bricks mostly throughout the nation but have done projects all over the country. We generally store the bricks at the reclaim site and try to supply our clients with materials that are as close as possible. These two things keep shipping costs down as much as possible.
