Nokia CFO `Less Optimistic' on InterDigital Accord (Update1)

By Amy Thomson

March 25 (Bloomberg) -- Nokia Oyj, the world's biggest mobile-phone maker, is ``less optimistic'' than investors are that it will settle a patent dispute with InterDigital Inc., Chief Financial Officer Richard Simonson said.

``I'm a little less optimistic than the market implied yesterday,'' Simonson said in an interview in New York today. ``We always prefer to settle, but we will defend ourselves when the facts are with us.'' InterDigital dropped as much as 11 percent in Nasdaq Stock Market trading today.

InterDigital, which develops software and chips for wireless Internet access, said yesterday that the companies had made ``substantial progress'' toward settling, which pushed its stock up the most in three months. Nokia and InterDigital are still negotiating, Simonson said.

InterDigital, based in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania, dropped $1.41, or 6.3 percent, to $20.90 at 11:50 a.m. New York time. Nokia's American depositary receipts, each representing one ordinary share, rose $1, or 3.3 percent, to $31.30 in New York Stock Exchange composite trading.

Simonson said he couldn't predict whether his Espoo, Finland-based company would settle with InterDigital. Jack Indekeu, a spokesman for InterDigital, said the company couldn't immediately comment.
