The expanded sheet metal is used when different physical properties are needed, as in large panel areas, schools, and institutional buildings.

The electromagnetic behavior of an array of wire mesh panels, chicken wire or otherwise, as exists in a densely populated area is virtually impossible to predict. Remember that in addition to shielding through the conduction of RF energy to ground, the wire mesh that is not fully grounded is itself reradiating energy. This results in complex multi path patterns and local nodes of positive and negative interference. While examples of no interference can be found, that does not mean it never happens.

If you think that the wire has no affect, try telling one of your local broadcasters that you intend to wrap one of their transmitters in chicken wire to keep the birds off it.
