AWK.......3D-Secure to become the EMV of the Internet.

AWK i think any Bank or merchant that uses VISA's
3D-Secure will benefit from increased authentication
a TCG Trusted PC will provide to this internet payment
tech.Just as Wave provides the middleware for Caisse's
3D-Secure ID-TRONIC tech it could provide this middleware
to any other 3D-Secure vendor or Bank. What is interesting
here is not only the need for Wave's middleware tech but
the Fact that the Banks & merchants will require
TCG Trusted Users to provide Attestation & thus ensure
retail customers will also require one of Wave's TCG
Premium Services.......Attestation will be mandatory
for Banking imho on payments secured by a trusted pc..

MC's SecureCode 'Has Potential' In Chip Payments
Electronic Payments International
Jul 28 2003 : MasterCard and Visa have "helped the 3D Secure security protocol to become the EMV of the Internet", according to Lafferty Publications, but MasterCard's "PC Authentication Program seems doomed to failure". Part of MasterCard's SecureCode solution, the PC Authentication Program was formerly known as the Secure Payment Applications (SPA) protocol, for which cardholders had to download an application to a PC. Some "banks had bad experiences in the past with other solutions that were using wallets or applications" for eCommerce, says Bert Fierens, of MasterCard Europe, "and it has some very bad associations with it".

Conversely, the CAP (Chip Authentication Program) component of MasterCard's SecureCode solution, "has much greater potential", EPI reports. Since the EMV migration will run concurrently with 3D Secure, "banks could in the future exploit the large base of chip cards to enhance the security of online commerce by migrating from SecureCode with 3D Secure to SecureCode with CAP". For now, "the support of both card associations has been crucial in the rapid growth of 3D Secure", EPI asserts, with Visa EU signing over 4,000 retailers, 30 acquiring banks and 35 issuing banks for Verified by Visa, by end-June 2003.

About 80 per cent of Visa's US banks had adopted VbV by this date, while over 1.4 million cardholders in the Asia-Pacific had enrolled in the program. At end-June 2003, over 40 Visa issuers and 750 e-tailers in the region had registered for VbV, and Visa aims to handle 70 per cent of the region's online transactions through VbV by end-2004. Japanese issuer, Nippon Shinpan, is soon to offer a VbV version of its online payment gateway, and plans to sign 200 e-tailers by year's end. JCB is also considering VbV, but for now, MasterCard is targeting acquirers first, "to avoid the chicken-and-egg situation", and attract e-tailers.
