I may have posted this before, but while the topic is St Louis Catchers of the past, I couldn't resist. I was at the game when this incedent happened.
The Sards were playing the Astros, in the Astrodome. In the bottom half of the nineth, the Cards had a one run lead, two out with a runner on second.
Base hii! The Astro runner rounded third and headed home, for the potential tying run. The Card's catcher was Joe Torre. Joe went toward third and blocked the plate. He interfered with the runner and tagged him out
Houston continded that Torre violated the rule on blocking the plate The Umps didn't see it that way. St Louis won.
As Torre headed to the dugout, the Astros fans bood him vociferously. Joe was smiling, broadly and he flipped them off.
At the time Mickey Herskowitz was the Sports Editor for the Houston Chronical The next morning his colume was headlined
"That Chicken Catcher Torre"
