I remember visiting Boston and noticing that as well!

NORM! Rest in peace Georg Wendt...
‘Cheers’ star George Wendt dead at 76

(Lots of pictures at the link.)
Everyone knew his name.
George Wendt, famous for playing Norm Peterson in the iconic sitcom “Cheers,” has died at 76.
His family rep confirmed the news to The Post, saying Wendt “died peacefully in his sleep while at home” Tuesday.
“George was a doting family man, a well-loved friend and confidant to all of those lucky enough to have known him,” the family rep’s statement read. “He will be missed forever. The family has requested privacy during this time.”
Wendt’s official cause of death has not been disclosed.
The actor earned six consecutive Emmy nominations for his performance as Norm on NBC’s “Cheers” and appeared in all 275 episodes of the program.
Wendt starred in the comedy, which centered around the regulars of the Boston bar “Cheers,” alongside Ted Danson, 77, Rhea Perlman, 77, John Ratzenberger, 78, Kelsey Grammer, 70, Woody Harrelson, 63, Shelley Long, 75, the late Kirstie Alley, and more. The series ran 11 seasons from 1982 to 1993, and took home 28 Emmys.
Wendt was born in Beverly, Illinois, in 1948, and stuck to his roots by starting his career in the city’s booming improv landscape.
The actor began as a comedian at the Second City in the 1970s before becoming a household name.
He appeared in several TV shows until finally landing his big break as Norm.
The role would define Wendt’s career and legacy.
“Afternoon, everybody” became one of the most recognizable lines on “Cheers” and was Norm’s catchphrase. As one of the fan-favorites, Wendt scored six Emmy nominations for Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series.
He also reprised the role of Norm in the short-lived “Cheers” spinoff, “The Tortellis,” as well as another spinoff, “Frasier.”
Wendt later scored his own sitcom, “The George Wendt Show.” In the CBS program, he played a radio host car mechanic. It was scrapped after one month.
The National Comedy Center addressed Wendt’s legacy and death in a statement to The Post.
“From his early days with the Second City to his iconic role as Norm on Cheers, George Wendt’s work showcased how comedy can create indelible characters that feel like family. Over the course of 11 seasons, he brought warmth and humor to one of television’s most beloved roles. His work is proudly featured in the National Comedy Center, and we honor his legacy and the joy he brought to generations of fans,” said Journey Gunderson, the center’s executive director.
Wendt wasn’t the only one in his family who caught the acting bug.
“Saturday Night Live” alum Jason Sudeikis, 49, is the late star’s nephew.
The “Ted Lasso” star’s mother, Kathryn, is one of Wendt’s sisters.
The Post has reached out to Sudeikis’ rep for comment.
Wendt once teased that the hardest part of playing Norm was drinking the warm, flat and zero alcohol “beer.”
“There I was slamming those down for a whole day. It not only tastes disgusting, I was afraid of keeling over from high blood pressure,” he told the Washington Post in 1985. “Then I got the knack. I didn’t have to put all those brews away. It only mattered when the camera was pointing my way. It took a couple of years, but now I watch the camera. That’s how I make my money. That’s acting.”
He would go on to play Norm in other non-“Cheers” TV projects, including “Wings,” “The Simpsons” and “Family Guy.”
He also starred as himself on “Seinfeld” and “The Larry Sanders Show,” and had recurring roles on “The Naked Truth” and “Sabrina the Teenage Witch.”
Wendt didn’t just stick to the TV screen.
The star made his Broadway debut in “Art” (1998) and played Edna Turnblad in “Hairspray” from 2007 to 2008.
Wendt’s last public appearance was June 1, 2024, at the Big Slick Celebrity Weekend with NFL star Travis Kelce.
The actor reunited with his “Cheers” co-stars for a trip down memory lane in January 2024 at the 75th annual Primetime Emmy Awards.
The cast gathered around a replica of the series’ popular Boston bar to present the Best Directing for a Comedy Series and Best Writing in a Comedy Series statuettes.
Wendt is survived by his wife of 46 years, actress Bernadette Birkett; their children Hilary, Joe and Daniel; and his stepchildren, Joshua and Andrew.

Looks like Bobby Sherman is next... ‘60s heartthrob Bobby Sherman’s terminal illness has ‘spread everywhere,’ wife says
By Elizabeth Stanton, Fox News Published April 2, 2025, 12:34 p.m. ET
Courtesy Everett Collection
Bobby Sherman’s wife, Brigitte Poublon, shared a heartbreaking update about her husband.
In a phone interview with Fox News Digital, Poublon confirmed that Sherman is “terminally ill” and is currently “at home with special care.”
Poublon previously shared in a Facebook post that the 81-year-old has stage 4 cancer, and she told Fox News Digital that it is kidney cancer that has “spread everywhere.”
“He was doing crossword puzzles with me in the last few days. And then all of a sudden Saturday, he turned around and…he’s just sleeping more and his body’s not working anymore. It’s not. Everything’s shutting down.”
Sherman formally retired last year but was continuing to do autographs, “But now he can barely sign his name” and wants “to be left in peace” and spend time with his family and five dogs.
“His last words from the hospital last night were, ‘Brig, I just want to go home,’” Poublon said.
The outpouring of love and support from Sherman’s fans has “been overwhelming. A lot of them have been really great.”
There’s also been the support of their friends, like John Stamos, who Poublon said is sending a personal message to Sherman via video “because I told him I don’t recommend him come into the room where Bobby’s at right now.”
Stamos and Sherman met when the “Full House” star was an ambassador for the Brigitte and Bobby Sherman Children’s Foundation a few years ago: “And we’ve been best friends ever [since].”
“John’s been very great about giving support the last few years too,” Poublon added. The couple also met Lisa Marie Presley and Jerry Schilling, longtime friend of Lisa Marie’s dad, Elvis Presley.
Poublon shared a photo of Sherman, Stamos and Schilling together at a Los Angeles Rams game a few years ago, all three smiling and enjoying their time together.
Sherman, of course, has had his own incredible Hollywood career, which kicked off through a friendship with “Rebel Without a Cause” star Sal Mineo.
At a birthday party hosted by Mineo, Sherman sang “Happy Birthday” and was spotted by Jane Fonda and Natalie Wood, both of whom fell “in love with Bobby” and got him an agent, Poublon said.
That led to his first TV gig on the ABC series “Shindig!” as a house singer and cast member, a role he “really loved.”
He also maintained a friendship with Wood.
“He was very good friends, actually, Natalie Wood. He was very, very upset what happened when she passed away. That was devastating for Bobby,” his wife said.
Sherman made several records and landed his next big breakout part on the series “Here Come the Brides,” also on ABC, the show that “put Bobby on the map.”
“Fans went crazy with Bobby,” Poublon said, noting he was still doing weekend concerts while starring in the show.
Eventually, the show ended, and he concentrated on more concerts, where he earned money with an unexpected bonus for the teen idol.
“Bobby thought [it] was hilarious because his fans were so young, they always did concerts at 12 o’clock noon or 4 o’clock because they were young kids, so he never did an evening concert, which made him very happy. Bobby was always a day person, not a night owl. But Bobby has a great sense of humor. Still, up to this day, he has a great sense of humor.”
Sherman put his singing and acting career on hold and transitioned into working as a paramedic and later a technical reserve police officer with the Los Angeles Police Department and a reserve deputy sheriff with the San Bernadino County Sheriff’s Department.
Poublon said Sherman “gave his all” to public service, adding it was a “labor of love” for him.
The couple also founded the Brigitte and Bobby Sherman Children’s Foundation, an organization dedicated to providing education and meals to children in Ghana.
“It was always our dream to do something for a Third World country, because there’s a lot of nonprofits out here,” Poublon said. “But we wanted to do something special, and it’s hard to reach people in Africa, so we opened up five and a half acres. We have a huge musical village with soup kitchens. We’re serving over 375 meals a day; we’re going to up that to 500. We have bought just two more brand-new vans. We have classrooms and computers and a music room and pavilions. We send them on field trips, we pay for the college tuition.
“But that’s been our labor of love. Bobby’s never been able to make it, go to Africa. I was always worried about something being kind of sensitive back then,” she added.
Sherman and Poublon have been together for years, and she admitted “I got to meet my teen idol crush!”
She was always a fan, recalling, “I just read about him. One time when I saw People magazine, [and there] was a picture of him, and with his friend, Fred Miller, at the time. And I saw that [and thought], ‘You know what? He sounds like a great person.’”
But she never got “celebrity-crazed because I try to avoid that issue, you know, and I have to like them for who they are, not because of celebrity status. That was not an issue with me at all, and I think that’s what brought Bobby to me, the fact I wasn’t celebrity-crazed at all.”
They ended up meeting when Poublon’s brother threw her a 40th birthday, and he got in touch with Sherman’s manager. They became friends, and “he started helping with all my charity events, which was wonderful.”
Poublon hopes Sherman will be celebrated by family, friends and fans for his legacy as a performer and a compassionate person while he’s still here.
“I think it’s important that Bobby realizes the impact he left on the world, the music he left behind, the TV series he left behind, but mostly, too, his love for caring about people, being a paramedic, a cop,” she said. “I want to have him realize how many people he really influenced, how he touched lives.”
She continued, “From reading all the fan mail, how people were desperate at age 7 or 8 through abuse and all kinds of background family issues, he got them through some hard times growing up, so I want Bobby to realize how much his fans mean to him.”

Carl Dean, an asphalt paver who met his future wife, Dolly Parton, outside a Nashville laundromat more than six decades ago and quietly championed her as she rose to superstardom, died on Monday. He was 82.
Ms. Parton announced his death in a statement shared on social media. No cause was given.
While his wife was a world-famous star, Mr. Dean was a private man who kept a low profile. In a 2020 interview with Entertainment Tonight, Ms. Parton said her husband had never wanted to be in the spotlight.
“It’s just not who he is,” Ms. Parton said. “He’s like, a quiet, reserved person and he figured if he ever got out there in that, he’d never get a minute’s peace and he’s right about that.”
Mr. Dean was born to Virginia Bates Dean, known as Ginny, and Edgar Henry Dean, according to Ms. Parton’s website. He lived in East Ridge, Tenn., as a child, Ms. Parton told a local news channel in Chattanooga, Tenn. While Ms. Parton became a country star, he pursued a quiet life owning an asphalt-paving business.
The couple met outside the WishyWashy Laundromat the day she moved to Nashville in 1964, according to Ms. Parton’s website, when Ms. Parton was 18 and Mr. Dean was 21. They married two years later on Memorial Day in 1966 in Ringgold, Ga., with only Ms. Parton’s mother, a preacher and his wife in attendance.

Ms. Parton and Mr. Dean lived on a farm outside Nashville for decades.
Ms. Parton’s 1973 hit song “Jolene” was inspired by a bank teller who took interest in her husband in the early days of their marriage, she said in an interview with National Public Radio in 2008.

Roberta Flack, legendary ‘Killing Me Softly’ singer, dead at 88

Roberta Flack, the Grammy Award-winning singer best known for “Killing Me Softly With His Song,” has died. She was 88.
“We are heartbroken that the glorious Roberta Flack passed away this morning, February 24, 2025,” Flack’s rep said in a statement to The Post.
“She died peacefully surrounded by her family. Roberta broke boundaries and records. She was also a proud educator,” the statement added.
Flack was battling several health challenges in the years leading up to her death. She publicly revealed she had ALS in late 2022.
The progressive disease “has made it impossible to sing and not easy to speak,” Flack’s manager Suzanne Koga said in a release at the time. “But it will take a lot more than ALS to silence this icon.”
The 2022 release also said that the famous singer and pianist “plans to stay active in her musical and creative pursuits” through her eponymous foundation and other avenues.
Flack was born in North Carolina. As the daughter of a church organist, she learned how to play classic piano at a young age.
When she turned 15, she got a scholarship at Howard University in Washington, DC, where her singing and piano talents were discovered. She was later signed to Atlantic Records Group.
Flack was best known for hits like “Killing Me Softly With His Song” and “The First Time I Ever Saw Your Face,” the latter of which catapulted her into stardom after Clint Eastwood used it as the soundtrack for a love scene in his 1971 movie “Play Misty for Me.”
For both songs, Flack won back-to-back Grammy Awards for Record of the Year in 1973 and 1974. She was the first artist to accomplish that feat.
Flack’s other famous song is “Feel Like Makin’ Love,” which came out in 1974.
Over her career, Flack won five Grammys out of 14 nominations. She released 15 albums, her final one being the Beatles recital “Let It Be Roberta,” which came out in 2012.
“One of the hassles of being a Black female musician is that people are always backing you into a corner and telling you to sing soul,” she once told TIME. “I’m a serious artist. I feel a kinship with people like Arthur Rubinstein and Glenn Gould. If I can’t play Bartok when I want to play.”

In 2020, Flack, who also advocated for causes like civil rights in her music, told NPR that “every single song I’ve recorded expressed something deep and personal to me.”
“Each was my singular focus whether in the studio or on the stage,” she added.

Broadway and film actor Tony Roberts dead at 85
By Associated Press Published Feb. 8, 2025, 3:09 a.m. ET
Tony Roberts, a versatile, Tony Award-nominated theater performer at home in both plays and musicals and who appeared in several Woody Allen movies — often as Allen’s best friend — has died.
He was 85.
Roberts’ death was announced to The New York Times by his daughter, Nicole Burley.

Roberts had a genial stage personality perfect for musical comedy and he originated roles in such diverse Broadway musicals as “How Now, Dow Jones” (1967); “Sugar” (1972), an adaptation of the movie “Some Like It Hot,” and “Victor/Victoria” (1995), in which he co-starred with Julie Andrews when she returned to Broadway in the stage version of her popular film.
He also was in the campy, roller-disco “Xanadu” in 2007 and “The Royal Family” in 2009.
“I’ve never been particularly lucky at card games. I’ve never hit a jackpot. But I have been extremely lucky in life,” he write in his memoir, “Do You Know Me?” “Unlike many of my pals, who didn’t know what they wanted to become when they grew up, I knew I wanted to be an actor before I got to high school.”
Roberts also appeared on Broadway in the 1966 Woody Allen comedy “Don’t Drink the Water,” repeating his role in the film version, and in Allen’s “Play It Again, Sam” (1969), for which he also made the movie.
Other Allen films in which Roberts appeared were “Annie Hall” (1977), “Stardust Memories” (1980), “A Midsummer Night’s Sex Comedy” (1982), “Hannah and Her Sisters” (1986) and “Radio Days” (1987).

Broadway composer Jule Styne, Tony Roberts, Elaine Joyce, Cyril Ritchard and Robert Morse worked together on the musical “Sugar” back in 1971.

“Roberts’ confident onscreen presence — not to mention his tall frame, broad shoulders and brown curly mane — was the perfect foil for Allen’s various neurotic characters, making them more funny and enjoyable to watch,” The Jewish Daily Forward wrote in 2016.
In Eric Lax’s book “Woody Allen: A Biography,” Roberts recalled a complicated scene in “A Midsummer Night’s Sex Comedy” that Allen shot over and over — even after the film had been edited — to get his intended effect.
“When you go back to see (Allen’s work) two, three, four times, you begin to see the amazing amount of art in it, that nothing is accidental,” Roberts said.
Among his other movies were “Serpico” (1973) and “The Taking of Pelham One Two Three” (1974).
He was nominated twice for a Tony Award — for “How Now, Dow Jones” and “Play It Again, Sam,” when he was billed as Anthony Roberts.
One of Roberts’ biggest Broadway successes was Charles Busch’s hit comedy “The Tale of the Allergist’s Wife” (2000), in which he played the title character’s husband.
Roberts, who made his Broadway debut in 1962 in the short-lived “Something About a Soldier,” also was a replacement in some of its longest-running hits including “Barefoot in the Park,” “Promises, “Promises,” “They’re Playing Our Song,” “Jerome Robbins’ Broadway,” “The Sisters Rosensweig” and the 1998 Roundabout Theatre Company revival of “Cabaret.”
“I was lucky enough to get in on the last years of the Golden Age of Broadway. In that era there was a lot more going on that seemed to have high quality about it and great conviction,” he told Broadway World in 2015.
In London, he starred with Betty Buckley in the West End production of “Promises, Promises,” playing the Jack Lemmon role in this stage version of “The Apartment.”
Roberts’ television credits include the short-lived series “The Four Seasons” (1984) and “The Lucie Arnaz Show” (1985) as well as guest spots on such well-known shows as “Murder, She Wrote” and “Law & Order.”
Roberts was born in New York on Oct. 22, 1939, the son of radio and television announced Ken Roberts.
“I was raised in the middle of a lot of actor talk,” he told the AP in 1985. “My cousin was Everett Sloane, who was a very fine actor. My father’s friends were mostly actors. I’m sure that in some way I needed to prove myself in their eyes.”
He attended the High School of Music and Art in New York and graduated from Northwestern University in Illinois.
His marriage to Jennifer Lyons ended in divorce. He is survived by his daughter, the actor Nicole Burley.
He first met Allen backstage when he was starring in “Barefoot in the Park,” having replaced Robert Redford.
Roberts had unsuccessfully auditioned four times for Allen’s first Broadway play, “Don’t Drink the Water.” Seeing Roberts perform in “Barefoot in the Park” convinced Allen that Roberts was worth casting.
According to his memoir, Allen told him, “You were great. How come you’re such a lousy auditioner?”

TO ALL:
It is with deep and sincere regret that I report this:
One of our long time IHUB NASCAR board posters and contest member lost his wife a few weeks ago. I just found out last evening. His IHUB and TalkZilla handle is iamshazzam. (Jim)
Jim has given me permission to share the PM he sent me last night:

Thanks Phil. Sad news - I lost my wife of 45 years three weeks ago. Am still in a state of shock and absolutely lost. I'll keep coming here because I feel like I'm among friends. Thanks for the invite and kindness. If you're interested in Laverne's Memorial, just visit http://dignity.mem.com/Story.aspx?ID=2679224 and feel free to leave a comment in the guest book if you want. I know Pete might like to see it too so let him know if you will. We had many many wonderful years together and I have been a very Blessed man for having had her as my lifelong companion and friend.
Again, thanks for the friendship and I'll jump in here often. Time will certainly help but will never erase the great memories.
Your friend, Jim
I'm going to post this message on our memorial board here, and I also started a TalkZilla board in her honor. Please offer your condolences to Jim.

From one of his Posts/Sayings >
Life's journey is not to arrive at the grave safely in a well-preserved
body,
but rather to skid in sideways, totally worn-out, shouting,
'Holy shit! What a ride!'
Screw the doctors - I'm back riding my Harley. Screw the economy, I'm living
it up.

Jim------Just wanted to let you know that I lost my best friend early Thursday a.m. He had really began to weaken due to the tumors and the chemo. He was here at home with me and died peacefully. I can truthfully say that he was ready to meet His Maker which he did. I am truly blessed to know that today he is in a much better place with no pain and sorrow. You can let his chat board friends aware of his death if you wish. I just know he truly knew you and Carol were praying for him daily. Stay in touch. Amy
Dr. Feelgood advised valleytopdog passed away:

Notice of the passing of valleytopdog on Friday May 21, 2010
I am the brother of John (valleytopdog) who wanted me to inform this board of his passing. Some of you, I believe, met with him personally. He wanted to let you know how much he enjoyed the many exchanges that he had with many of you on this board. He was a very big believer in the NanoViricides technology and was looking for it to be commercialized during his lifetime. He had a very aggressive form of lung cancer that took him in less than a month. We got him on DCA that began to help, but it was brought too late to the battle to benefit him.
Peace
Robert
