HD, not sure what you are implying by indicating that Sarissa's vote was Abstain rather than Against. I can't speak to specifically why they advocated an Abstain vote but there must be a good reason for them.

From their communique, they clearly indicated that they thought there were changes necessary at Amarin:

"As Amarin's largest shareholder, we are frustrated by the performance of Amarin’s stock and believe Amarin should be better managed to maximize value for shareholders."

Actually, this may better explain the reason for the Abstain votes - carrot vs stick:

"Given ongoing discussions, we intend to vote “ABSTAIN” on all matters at the annual meeting. We believe this reinforces our message that change is needed as we give the board the time to add shareholder representatives to the board."
