Good read on Ghawar describing how water injection is now needed to get extra lift to help suck oil out more easily. In the early years, the wells free flowed oil to the surface due to internal pressure (oil is lighter than water and evidently the water was pushing the oil up in a sense providing artesian lift). Curious to note, in several accounts when drilling the original wells in Saudi Arabia (down to 13k meters) they only encountered free flowing extremely salty water.... until they finally breached the oil trapped in the depths. Zion similarly has thus far only encountered extremely salty brine water until seemingly MJ2....
