Lebby just made two huge statements today and I am not sure many noticed the significance.

1) He provided an answer that the company would initially enter the short haul interconnect market (very high volume of units).

2) He stated the company will provide polymers to both CPO (Co-Packaged Optics) AND pluggable transceivers.

This is significant because the company has for years stated that polymers were ideally suited for medium to long haul networks and the consensus has been that this would be their initial foray into commercialization. Long haul has drastically lower volume of units sold than short haul. This is because there is a lower number of long haul (1550nm) connections between datacenters when compared to the hundreds of thousands of short haul (1310nm) transceivers connecting racks within each hyperscale datacenter.

When Lebby speaks of mass-commercialization, I now see the type of volume he is referring to. Simply huge.

Below is a transcript of the question and answer.

What are the likely first large significant use cases that you see adopting?

Michael Lebby:
Well certainly short haul interconnects with 1310 and 1550nm wavelengths seems to be an interesting sweet spot for us. I think in those types of applications, folks are really demanding high-speed and low-power solutions. I think one of the interesting things that's happening in the marketplace today, and I think most folks that are technically orientated have seen the battle between CPO (Co-Packaged Optics) solutions versus pluggable solutions. And for us, we want to provide electro-optic polymers to either. In fact, if both win we'll provide polymers to both. So we want to be a common platform to increase the performance and lower the power in either solution. Certainly we've seen a lot of discussion in telecom and datacom as well as 5G about how packaging is supposed to go, whether it should be pluggable or non-pluggable. But I think if you want a technology to be ubiquitous, you want to be able to support both.
