according to the eia pie chart the number for primary consumption is 12%. An impressive increase from a few years ago but substantially < 20% even if odd rounding is used.

the difference betw primary and secondary is covered at the top of eia page and that gets to my common refrain of lies, damn lies and statistics. Jimmy the numbers and categories enough and you can always get the apparent outcome you like.

The number they give for primary production is also 12%. I suspect that is generously in favor of renewables. That's because primary production from things like natural gas, coal, and petroleum is exportable whereas the export capacity from renewables is much less so. I'm not sure they are counting exported energy.
