Guys, this is off topic but I am seeking your view, experience or input if you any. My daughter has just completed her Oncology fellowship from UAB and is moving closer to us Atlanta metropolitan area as she will be working as a clinician in this area; she is buying a house and lately we are aware of Radon testing and to our surprise it turns out to be almost every other house has some radon exposure going in GA. EPA recommends to install a mitigation system for exposure above 4 microcuries average. They suggest long term average comes from 90 days of measurement and short term for 60 days; but when you buy a home you get to test only for about 48hrs just before you put your earnest money. My question is how low is low exposure that is still ok without a mitigation system. EPA recommends 2.0 is a safe limit in many places in their official EPA Radon site but at one place it says No Radon exposure level is safe. Looks like zero exposure level before or after building a home these days is not that easy because this thing comes from below the slab or basement foundation if and when there is a crack and if there is a pocket of gas there exists already under the ground. You know chronic Radon exposure can cause lung cancer. Looks like we may have to live with around 1 or 2micrcurie exposure in most of the homes across USA unless we still want to install a mitigation system to bring it down to zero which technically I don't know whether it is even possible. Thanks!
