Way back when, I maintained that the holding company would purchase companies and take possession of the brick and mortar assets of the companies and set up lease agreements with the companies they bought to occupy the buildings. Therefore if for some reason the companies went out of business, the buildings they occupied could either be repurposed or sold on the open market. You can see the benefits to the holding company to take advantages of land appreciation among other favorable tax incentives. All of this is part of Holding Company Theory 101 which I studied in one of my business school classes many years ago. It was no doubt the way WMI business model was developed.I am sure they OWNED thousands of properties.
