NYT Dakota gas flaring - State doesn't have online access to form 9's (gas-oil ratio reports) so the best we can do is what Platt's wrote back in 2019 (link below). IMO GOR for the independents drilling new locations are much higher, probably 50% higher based on data presented back in 2017 that showed the trends as you move away from sweet spots. Platt's uses historic GOR figure of 2 MCF/bbl. I extrapolate from 2017 trends that it is probably closer to 3 MCF/bbl.

So for every barrel oil shipped, half a barrel (in energy equivalent gas) is flared. So it is not fair to place Dakota's in the same category as Nigeria or Angola because the latter two have much lower GOR to start. Shale without gas gathering is much less energy efficient than conventional oil.
