It was something about the people working in the film on the China side were with tax evasion embezzling funds from the state sponsored funds for the film. (or so said the CCP) As punishment and a warning to all others most likely the CCP cancelled the film.

The director Xiao Feng I've also read some posts purportedly was not one of the people involved, which is a shame because he had a good talent and vision, and from the few clips and scenes I was able to see it looked like he did a good job directing it.

Also the release in the U.S. was super super limited I think it ran for like 2 days on 3 screens or something like that.
