The enhanced recovery pathways (ERP) are a collection of best practices that are implemented to improve patient outcome, reduce infections, and help get patients discharged more quickly. It has nothing to do with the surgery itself, but rather what is done for the patient before, during and after the surgery. They are being implemented for specific surgery types, e.g. spine, total joint, colon, gyn, etc. It involves patient hydration preop, use of a variety of non-narcotic pain meds (gabapentin, NSAISs, Tylenol, nerve blocks) to prove for comfort while reducing postoperative nausea, reducing use of urinary catheters, and so on.
