You mean hydrogen cars or those run on water electrolysis? Hydrogen cars are not a viable alternative IMO without significant subsidies because of the cost. Water cars do improve fuel mileage from what I have read, but you still need some gas or power source for the batteries.
Then of course there are turbine cars - but apparently there is public acceptance and the initial cost of the engine.
I think the bomb would be the electric car - but of course the powers that be didn't like that.
