It's not a criminal trial, and I don't think it's about any overriding principles of "fairness".

My limited understanding of patent law is that it is a highly technical and rules-driven area where many things seem arbitrary, but only the experts really know how to navigate it.

Sort of like being an expert in import/export. Total sausage making.
