Shouldbe, your theory certainly has merit!

When the drill bit first punched through the cap rock it most likely encountered gas not oil since gas accumulates at the top of the reservoir. As you noted, if heavy mud was then used as they drilled deeper, as an oil zone was reached it may not have been able to enter the wellbore.

Its an art and science to keep the drill mud balanced with the formation.
