Cash earnings,
My take on it? Are your cash holdings large enough to make a difference vs the risk? There's nothing wrong with holding a very low duration corporate bond fund for these purposes, nice yield mid 2's, but your going to have to keep a sharp eye out for a turning South economy, credit risk, or rising rates. Credit risk would be the biggie on a economy turning sour. Seems really late in the game to maybe even consider. But as a "general rule" there's nothing wrong with taking some credit risk in an expanding economy. My other thought is to check muni rates on short duration too and get the tax advantages.
