Thanks for all the helpful comments. A lot of info to digest, but I'll run some simulations on a few high-beta value stocks. I also found Tom Veale's site helpful, especially the section about how to choose a stock. I'm using those 'rules' as my guidelines. Although I only have $5000 to invest ($3333 stock, rest in cash), I think that I'd like to invest half of my stock in QCOM, and the other in XLK. I found that together, if I invested last year at this time, they made me almost 20% profit. However, lately the prices are on the high side (compared to the 52 week high/low), and I think I'll wait until Sep/Oct comes around and see the situation.
