My son is a patent attorney, and we discussed this subject in general terms some months back. Generally speaking, the patent trolls are the ones often in a legal fight. Companies usually try to find a way to work together or ignore patents that really don't affect their bottom line. He also told me that many times companies don't even bother with a patent as the technology is moving so quickly in some areas, by the time somebody catches up they are on to something else.

Because Apple has a working relationship with LiquidMetal through the Crucible agreement, they would find a way to work together to advance production technologies... if there was no impact on their business.
