I've never been to a horserace. Barely know which end of the horse should point forward. But I know racehorse investing is often a sucker deal. Like investing in broadway plays...an ego thing for people who think it's "classy." There's a zillion ways for smart pros to scam wealthy newbies.


Years ago a distant relative bought a share in a racehorse and lost it almost instantly. He was a sleazy personal injury lawyer, but he adored showy things... cars, antiques, the finest clothes and even fancy investments. I doubt he ever had $100 in a normal bank account. He didn't want anything he couldn't brag about.

Now things are probably even riskier with tracks closing right and left. I've heard that horses, ranking just below the top, are being slaughtered for food.

I know you're referring to something else, but be careful. The genteel backdrop of Churchill Downs masks some ugliness. Most famous was the murder of heiress Helen Brach (Brach Candy):
