I had a friend who was a ex-Marine Major helicopter pilot in Nam' and a drinking buddy (back when I drank 30 years ago) and would not go to the VA or Vet Center to address it. He was a John Wayne type but finally, finally, after losing everything, wife, kids, house, etc. went to the VA. He called me to tell me he had been diagnosed 100% PTSD but unfortunately he died less than a year later from cirrhosis of the liver. His name was Walt and I mention him in one of my songs.
I also have a current friend, Army Captain, retired, two tours, Iraq and Afghanastan, who is diagnosed with PTSD but it took a long time before he would tell me. I think there is still a stigma in some minds associated with it which I hope goes away with time in our society. No one who hasn't been there understands what it's like.
