Ex-dividend date decides who gets paid.
Record date decides who was a shareholder on that date. Looks like COR may have gotten caught because they did not own shares rather their client may had warrants that they converted to shares after June 30.
Still doesn't explain why they would have to pay without getting a dividend first. Only explanation comes to mind is that they only shorted. Never owned shares.
