Litigating against another individual for slander or libel can be its own form of justice, even if the case does not go to trial, is settled, or if the damages awarded are one dollar.
When someone with mischievous or evil intent is served with litigation documentation and must then defend their actions, initially by advancing their legal counsel a fat retainer, it can be a wonderful opportunity and form of retribution for an impulsive verbal statement, slander, or a written statement, libel, spoken or written in the course of normal life or electronic media toward a plaintiff.
Moral of the story is its better and safer to make nice or simply be silent. Philosophically, in my experience, folks who tend toward systemic negativity about others have glasses that are half-empty and generally speaking become half-empty themselves. Others don't like being around people who are half-empty, so they become less caring about the negative person and tend to gravitate toward others who are half-full, or better. Positive breeds positive forward motion and the opposite is true as well.
