To begin with thank you for all the DD. I dont dig too deep into companies that I am not invested in.

You are welcome. I am interested in the science which is how I was led to KBLB to begin with. I also like to know the potential competition that the company I am invested in will face.

Spidersilk is the holy grail of fibers. Not films or foams or goo.

I believe the proteins will ultimately have a much larger variety of applications as it is worked with, but I agree that silk fibers are the obvious starting point.

How was this "fund raising" done?

It is laid out in a PR here: http://news.spiber.jp/wp/wp-content/uploads/2014/11/Spiber20141104.pdf
From what I can make out, it looks like it was a grant from “ImPACT Japan”, a Japanese organization that helps innovative startup companies in Japan take off. Also, it looks like I misread the amount of money they got, it was not 500 million yen, it was 2.5 billion yen (~$16 million USD).

Paying these people just $10 an hour makes 100 kilos have a labor cost of $100,000

I agree that their product will be very expensive. Price over competitors is what Kim needs to promote going forward if he wants to compete. He also needs to start actually getting the silk out there to build up some hype and demand. I worry that if he does not, other companies may surpass KBLB and I will be out a few years retirement as will many others here.

The tortoise beating the hare only works if the tortoise continuously moves forward and the hare stops for a nap.
