Welcome Richard and thank you for the insight on these publications. This "Hermes" project certainly has been confusing to place in comparison with EO modulator design. Your description really helps to put the respective research efforts in context. This realization inspires another question if you would be so kind to help us understand further:

Dr. Keren Bergman at Columbia made the status of the "power budget" pretty understandable. She indicated that the concern in the past about thermal fluctuations was minor compared to the entire power budget of the photonic circuit because of the overwhelming size of the power needed for the optical source. The power cost of controlling the temperature is thought to be minor in comparison to the power cost of the light source.

Is there any reason that Lightwave would need to wait for a light source with a better power cost? Do you think the time is near for a metro transceiver? How about a data center transceiver?

There seems to be mixed messages with respect to the data center. Are optical transceivers being used in the data center today?
