patopinion: The list of subsidiaries that you posted was from the 10-K for the year ending 31 Dec 2013. It is interesting to compare that list of 22 subsidiaries with the list in the 10-K for the period ending 31 December 2010, which only listed 10 subsidiaries.

As you stated not all of the subsidiaries were set up for monetary purposes. I do know that when patents are bought or sold the transfer (assignment) usually goes through two or three specially set up subsidiaries as in/out transactions. Don't know why it has to be done that way, except to keep the lawyers busy.
