I posted this on the Rants board, and AKvetch suggested I c&p it here.

Still finding my way around IHUB...didn't know this board existed, but am impressed already, just with all the info in the ibox.

I'm a freebie & won't be able to respond or PM after happy hour, and I have to leave for the next hour or so, but any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. TIA (BTW- Any suggestions will have to be given as if to a 3rd grader, lol)

My system is a year old Dell Dimension P4 2.26, 512 PC800 RDRAM, 80G hard drive, using XP and IE 6 (or whatever the latest is)

I understand this is the place to rant and rave a little? Apologize if it's not and I'm outta line here, but.....

After about 6 years of owning a couple of computers, I still consider myself a mid- to upper-level beginner, but in the past couple of weeks I've gotten into all kinds of tweaking, thanks to the PC Advice board on RB. I've been doing things that were putting me way deep into unknown "skeery" territory, renaming catroot folders, cleaning the registry, etc., even had the infamous blue screen happen...... twice.

I've been listening to Wantobe's board lately, and went to crank up the volume, only to discover that the volume icon was no longer on my task bar. Went to Sounds in Settings and clicked the box to add it to the task bar, and got a message that the program has not been installed. Huh? It was there a couple of weeks ago!

After a lot of digging around, discovered the file is missing (Just got fed up and walked away somehow, I guess) and couldn't be added in the add/remove section.

Microsoft Knowledge Base had an answer, (Article 319095) so I spent several hours trying it, but it didn't work. Tells me "no destination specified." The directions they give have no destination? Great...give me directions to nowhere! How do I know where it's supposed to go?

Someone suggested I re-install the OS as that should replace any missing items. At this point, I'm tired of banging my head against the wall, so I figured with all the things I'd done to the 'puter, why not. Start fresh. (Forgot about what was all involved with that!)

I've spent most of yesterday (and still fiddling with it today a little) re-installing XP, a years worth of upgrades.....all kinds of stuff to get my 'puter back to where it was, and STILL NO DAMN VOLUME CONTROL!!!

This is personal now!

I'll by all that's holy find that sucker if I have to tear this 'puter down byte by byte! May even have to talk to Gates and Dell personally, but I'll get it back!

I WANT MY VOLUME CONTROL!!
