Intel again leads the graphics processor market, followed by Nvidia and AMD. Despite the ongoing legal dispute between Intel and Nvdia — which was recently stirred up — each showed first-quarter growth and is expected to have a strong year ahead.
Samsung Comes To Their Senses
http://www.eetimes.com/rss/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=223300174
SAN JOSE, Calif. -- In a major departure, South Korea's Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. is reportedly exploring an alternative in high-k dielectrics: It is looking at gate-last technology, according to sources.
If the reports are true, this would be a major departure from Samsung's original position. The gate-first technology was developed and is now being touted by IBM Corp.'s ''fab club.'' IBM, Infineon, GlobalFoundries, NEC, Samsung, ST, Toshiba and others are part of IBM's technology alliance.
IBM, GlobalFoundries and Samsung are co-developing foundry processes and will roll out a gate-first, high-k offering this year. So far, though, IBM's camp, which includes Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (AMD), has not rolled out a high-k/metal-gate offering.
The camp is far behind Intel Corp., which has shipped 45- and 32-nm processors based on its gate-last, high-k technology.
ISSCC: Intel has edge over AMD, for now
http://eetimes.com/news/latest/showArticle.jhtml;jsessionid=MVJJO3GF1ZXN3QE1GHPSKH4ATMY32JVN?articleID=222700324
SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. — Intel Corp. has a significant, if temporary, edge over archrival Advanced Micro Devices based on news and papers emerging here Monday (Feb. 8) at the International Solid State Circuits Conference (ISSCC).
supposedly this marketing firm Intel hired to do the commercials did their focus group research & said the ads are working??
It looks to me that Intel spends quite a bit of time and money to get feedback from their advertising. They started this "Rock Star" ad campaign on a limited basis, and since they now seem to be expanding the campaign, my guess is that despite some negative comments from this board on the ads, those ads seem to be working.
Coincidentally Here is an interview that was published a few days ago, with an intel VP of marketing that explains some of intel's advertising effectiveness data collection:

competition for the benefit of the technically challenged.
Hehehehe, well OF COURSE! We all "KNOW" that anything AMD does that's good, is due to their "superior brilliance", and anything they screw up, must "OBVIOUSLY" be Intel's fault.
AMD Radeon HD 5830 issue found during validation process
http://www.digitimes.com/news/a20100127PD219.html
A last minute issue discovered during the validation of ATI Radon HD 5830-based reference boards has prompted AMD to postpone the cards from their scheduled launch on January 25 to a later date, sources at graphics card makers have revealed.
Chipzilla said that the Ion, which combines an Atom processor with Nvidia's GeForce graphics, is "overkill".
I'm OK id Nv wants to do this. If people want to pay more for a netbook with more features, they'll buy it, if they don't, they won't. They'll buy the cheaper netbook from someone else.
Intel shifts focus to laptop graphics technology
http://news.cnet.com/8301-13924_3-10410785-64.html?part=rss&subj=news&tag=2547-1_3-0-5
Intel will focus on next-generation laptop technology that combines graphics functions with the main processor, in the wake of the cancellation of its initial "Larrabee" graphics processor.
Despite the market-rattling news from Intel late on Friday--which pushed rival Nvidia's stock up more than 12 percent on Monday--Intel still remains the leader in the high-volume "integrated" graphics market........
I wonder how much of that was attributable to Barrett's overbuilding state of the art plants
My guess it had more to do with Barrett's foolish Dot Com spending spree....

Intel to launch four Arrandale CPUs for mainstream notebooks in January 2010
http://www.digitimes.com/news/a20091113PD209.html
Intel plans to launch four 32nm dual-core Arrandale CPUs (Calpella platform), the Core i5-520M, Core i5-430M, Core i3-350M and Core i3-330M, in the first half of January 2010 for the mainstream notebook segment, according to sources from notebook players.
Nvidia's web site of lame anti-Intel cartoons

IMO this reflects far more poorly on Nvidia than Intel.
Hey, I thought it was funny. You know what else is "funny"? reminding everyone again, who is the #1 Chip Company on earth. So, perhaps instead of making fun of others, Nvidia might want to consider focusing their efforts more on improving their products, since recently, their main competitor ATI appears to be wiping the floor with them. Now THAT'S really funny
AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition: XBit Labs Conclusion
http://xbitlabs.com/articles/cpu/display/phenom-ii-x4-965_11.html#sect0
Phenom II X4 965 processor launch is hardly an unexpected event. Once AMD got the new 45 nm Deneb core at their disposal that featured much more impressive frequency potential than the previous Agena core, they started pushing its frequencies higher and higher in an attempt to catch up with Core 2 Quad and Core i7 that have gone far ahead by then. And today the clock speed of Phenom II X4 processor family has reached 3.4 GHz, which is higher than any of the contemporary Intel processors can boast.
But unfortunately, this high clock speed revealed all the drawbacks of Stars (K10) microarchitecture that AMD have been using in their processors for the last 2 years. As we have seen during our tests, the new Phenom II X4 965 working at 3.4 GHz frequency is pretty much as fast as Core 2 Quad Q9550 at 2.83 GHz nominal speed and fall behind Core i7-920 with even lower nominal frequency of 2.66 GHz. So, AMD CPUs lose to Intel competitors quite significantly in IPC (instructions per clock). It is this particular fact, but not the insufficiently high clock speeds, that do not allow AMD solutions to find their way into the high-end price segments.
Moreover, considering that Phenom II X4 965 has increased to 140 W typical heat dissipation, its launch seems even more to be the “last resort”. We obviously shouldn’t expect Phenom II X4 processor family to speed up any further, at least until new Deneb core stepping comes out (which we have no information of so far).....
Therefore, we believe that it can be of interest only to those users who already have a Socket AM2+ or Socket AM3 platform and would like to increase their computational potential by upgrading the CPU. Frankly speaking, we can’t tell you what about the new Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition processor could possibly attract new fans.
***************************
Lemmie guess..... IPC, Instructions Per Clock, which was the "Be All That You Can Be" benchmark for AMD Fanboys claim of AMD superiority, NOW, will no longer matter at all. Anybody wanna bet?
Did AMD Hire Glover Park To Smear Intel Prior To Lawsuit?
http://download.intel.com/pressroom/legal/1676_Ltr%20to%20SM%20Poppiti%20With%20Exh%20A%20and%20B%20From%20David%20Moore%20re%20Intels%20Discovery%20of%20Glover%20Park_Intel.pdf
Did AMD just admit to hiring Glover Park, specifically to influence government agencies, columnists, technology leaders, Joe Q Public, and anyone else who would listen, BEFORE they admitted they knew they were going to sue Intel?
I am still puzzled why AMD does not take Mas's advice and simply raise prices? LOL.
IMHO
Ohhhhhh Noooooo, they don't need to. Haven't you heard "The Wisdom"? The Arabs are going to continue to pour money into AMD, based on their desire for "pride" in becoming a world wide leader in chip production....

Windsock: The Stimulus Bill does have funding for wetlands protection but there is no funding for a San Francisco Bay project let alone the salt mouse.
*******************

*******************
Except, what "The major networks are reporting" apparently is not quite true. Here is an article from the Mercury News, one of the largest newspapers in the SFO/Oakland/San Jose Bay Area.....
http://www.mercurynews.com/peninsula/ci_11696283
Bay Area mouse spurs national debate over stimulus bill
A 1-inch-tall endangered rodent found in the marshes of Palo Alto and other San Francisco Bay cities became a national symbol of wasteful spending Thursday for opponents of President Obama's stimulus plans.
Trouble is, the facts were mostly wrong. But the lightning speed of Internet news enabled it to take on urban legend stature within hours.....
The conservancy's wish list included five major ongoing wetlands restoration projects totaling nearly 4,000 acres, said civil engineer Steve Ritchie, a Coastal Conservancy staff member who helped draw it up. And the federal Army Corps of Engineers included all five projects on its own list of possible ways to spend stimulus money.
The projects, which range from Napa County to Silicon Valley, involve moving levees, creating islands and converting former industrial salt ponds back to marshes. Each could begin by year's end and would benefit dozens of species, including salmon, steelhead trout, ducks, egrets, and yes, the endangered mouse, Ritchie said.
The work also would provide increased flood protection to homes and businesses around San Francisco Bay, he said. In 2003, the Bush administration endorsed and helped fund the largest of the projects, the purchase of former Cargill salt ponds for wetlands restoration.
Even if the stimulus passes, there's no guarantee the projects will get the money, since they're not named in the bill. That will be up to the Army Corps of Engineers, which does everything from harbor dredging to building dams to restoring wetlands.
Is Ritchie upset his "wish list" became a national punching bag?
"In the atmosphere we're in you expect it," Ritchie said. "But the disappointing part is that this isn't just about one critter. It's about jobs, construction, flood control — there's a lot there."
This will be a boutique foundry with only one customer.

AMD: Fighting the unbeatable foe
http://www.eetimes.com/news/semi/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=212100020
Advanced Micro Devices' place in the annals of the semiconductor industry is now more or less fixed. The battle for dominance in the microprocessor market has been won and lost. The crown belongs to Intel—if this were medieval times, heads would already be rolling at 1 AMD Place in Sunnyvale, Calif.
AMD's future isn't clouded in any great mystery. The company is burdened with debt, is losing market share and appears destined to become an even smaller player in its core MPU market. Recent strategic moves at AMD are not making a dent in Intel's leadership: The acquisition of graphics IC vendor ATI Technologies hasn't lived up to expectations and becoming a fabless IC vendor isn't a game changer either.
But executives at AMD haven't yet come to terms with their second-place status. On the contrary, they continue to pursue actions they believe would level the playing field and make it possible for them to beat Intel.
The bottom line is that AMD cannot beat Intel, not now and perhaps not ever. The company's top executives, including outgoing executive chairman Hector Ruiz, may believe they can continue to trade punches with Intel in this unequal slugfest but that strategy is, to put it bluntly, delusional. It has only brought misery to AMD and pushed the company into a spending contest it has no hope of winning.
While AMD continues its grandstanding, the rest of the industry can glean significant lessons from its experience. As observers ponder AMD's future, they must focus not merely on how the company arrived at its current disadvantageous position or even what it could do to reverse Intel's overwhelming edge, but on what they can learn from one of the most fascinating developments to emerge from the sector.......

Intel places first major immersion lithography tool order
http://www.fabtech.org/editor_s_blog/_a/does_asml_walk_on_water_intel_places_first_major_immersion_lithography_tool/
Having claimed 65 percent of the lithography market in 2007, ASML positioned itself for further gains in 2008. The significant capital spending cuts by memory manufacturers this year, coupled to very tight spending from the major foundries, meant that not even Moore’s Law enablers such as lithography tool vendors would be immune from the serious slump in spending......
******
On the logic IDM front (not many players left that can be counted as major), ASML has picked up the first significant immersion tool order from none other than Intel Corporation. Shipments are due in Q1 and Q2 next year as Intel prepares its 32nm migration, the first time Intel will use immersion technology.
Of course, ASML didn’t directly name Intel, but as the last remaining major IDM in the U.S., it gets harder to be descriptive only, especially when related to technology buys at the leading-edge.....
******
Update:
Editor response: Ok, a little clarification is required on the Intel/ASML tool order. At SEMICON West I had the opportunity to speak with people related to the Nikon win at Intel for the 32nm process/immersion node. I was informed that this win was temporary and that ASML’s immersion tools were being used by Intel for 32nm R&D and that findings there led to the ‘current’ strategy to stay with Nikon’s technology from dry to wet for that first node.
AMD’s gamble
I haven't seen this posted, and Fabtech seems to have their finger pretty well on the pulse of Semiconductor Manufacturing....
http://www.fabtech.org/editor_s_blog/_a/amds_gamble/
A simple one to start with was the lack of reference to the fact that in all reality, AMD has become a fabless company. Granted, it has a 44.4 percent stake in ‘The Foundry Company,’ but as the financial wizards will no doubt point out, the fabs have exited the balance sheets.
As any fabless company knows, dealing with foundries becomes an integral part of business operations and with that comes the need to have a ‘Director of Operations’ and a backroom team of engineers to handle that side very closely. In essence, AMD as a fabless company will have to have a unit dedicated to this. I am sure they have this in place as the ATI acquisition would have brought with it that set-up, but this was something the company didn’t mention. It is important, as a restructuring within AMD would or should be taking place to handle its new found freedom from manufacturing.
Going fabless is fundamentally a big gamble for AMD, something that will probably take time to unravel. A point some may not have realised is that the only other microprocessor company that was fabless is up for sale and only after it had become an IP company rather than a fabless company. There is a precedent being set here and that must make Intel very happy......
*********
Given that Foundry Company’s capital spending budget for the next five years is forecast to be less than AMD’s capital spending outlays over the previous five years, it is highly unlikely Foundry Company will help AMD gain additional market share. In fact, AMD will be lucky to sustain flat market share in the MPU segment. Moreover, a significant portion of the Foundry Company’s budget must be allocated to the new foundry business, and this, of course, will take away precious spending needed for MPU production!
Obviously, AMD has survived to fight another day by going fabless, but side-stepping the unnecessary hype in which AMD chose to announce the news, AMD will continue to struggle and its foundry friend doesn’t look set to do any better......
Edit: It's true! I've now fully confirmed this story with
Tom Yager, Andrew Byrnes, and Scientia at amdzone.
Faud might have confirmed it too but I can't understand
anything he writes.
No No No No No, I just heard through my secret sources, that NY is going to triple, umm no I mean quadruple the subsidy for the NY Fab, all of AMD's creditors will forgive all their debt tomorrow, the Arabs have handed Hector a blank check, Intel is going to ignore any of that pesky cross license stuff, and the tooth fairy is taking over from Dirk.
Or maybe it was the Easter Bunny.

The rumor is that Intel is having problem validating SMP Nehalem systems, and thus 2P Nehalem-EP Xeons won't be available until Q109, maybe Q2, what server OEMs expect.
Well.... I'll give him some credit, At Least "He" was honest enough to also mention that his information was from a "biased source"
By the end of 2009 AMD will have 2 300mm Fabs, Intel will have 3, that's a 40-60 split, 35-65 say if we include D1D. You underestimate the upcoming marketshare war.
I don't think that AMD will have enough time to ramp 2 Fabs to any significant volume on 45nm by the end of 2009. At least not anywhere near enough volume by that time to produce a "marketshare war". Not to mention a "marketshare war" would limit margins, and drain profits, from a company that doesn't appear able to afford it. So, a "marketshare war" by a company bleeding red ink for multiple quarters, doesn't seem like a smart idea to me.

We have a similar such law in Arizona appropriately nicknamed "The Stupid Motorist Law" Enacted after several incidents where drivers apparently thought that their SUV's were actually "boats"
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stupid_Motorist_Law
"The "Stupid Motorist Law", which corresponds to section 28-910 of the Arizona Revised Statutes, states that any motorist who drives around barricades to enter a flooded stretch of roadway may be charged for the cost of his/her rescue.
In such cases, if public emergency services (such as a fire department, or paramedics) are called to rescue the motorist and tow the vehicle out of danger, the cost of those services can be billed to the motorist.

Deneb 45nm samples still not in Taiwan
http://www.fudzilla.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=9070&Itemid=1
Nehalem is there for weeks
Many manufacturers in Taiwan that should have Deneb 45nm samples by now haven't got them. This is quite unusual if AMD wants to hit its Q4 2008 launch target.
We believe that AMD is aiming for a November launch of its desktop and server 45nm quad core parts but its rather strange that the big customers still don't have samples.
This is not good news for AMD fans and it’s not that rosy for AMD and its partners. We also heard that 3GHz or faster 45nm quad core is likely to be pushed to 2009. It’s very clear that Nehalem launches at 3.2GHz and Intel still has some headroom to clock its chips even higher.
Nehalem samples are with the important account for months now and the manufacturers are going to the final stages of designing boards and systems based on it. This simply cannot be good for AMD.
