BOSTON (MarketWatch) -- Shares of National City Corp. were up 20% in premarket trading Thursday following a report the Cleveland-based bank is in talks to sell itself.
The Wall Street Journal reported that potential buyers for National City (NCC, Trade ) include PNC Financial Services Group Inc. (PNC, Trade ) and Bank of Nova Scotia (BNS, Trade ). National City shares have lost more than 85% this year, with investors worried about the regional bank's exposure to home-equity loans. The company has been scaling back its mortgage business.
Elsewhere in M&A news, talks between Citigroup Inc. (C, Trade ), Wells Fargo & Co. (WFC, Trade ) and the government concerning a possible sale of Wachovia Corp. (WB, Trade ) have hit a setback as the parties wrangle over several issues, the Journal reported.
The sides are quarreling over how to carve up Wachovia's assets, according to the story. See full article at WSJ.com.
In the broader financial sector, the Financial Select Sector SPDR (XLF, Trade ) traded higher before the opening bell. Confidence was buoyed somewhat as markets reacted to the prospect the Treasury Department could take ownership stakes in U.S. banks to help them ride out the credit storm.
American International Group Inc. shares (AIG, Trade ) rose ahead of Thursday's opening bell. The Federal Reserve said it would provide $37.8 billion in additional cash to the insurance giant, which has come under fire this week over holding a costly executive retreat even after the company received a massive bridge loan from the government
