Seattle and Detroit Move Toward Decriminalizing Psychedelics
Though state laws in both places have not yet adapted, consumers of "entheogenic" plants and fungi are now less likely to be arrested and prosecuted in the two cities.

Two major cities, Seattle and Detroit, this fall approved measures aimed at protecting consumers of "entheogenic" plants and fungi from arrest and prosecution. Those new policies are part of a broader trend that began when Denver voters approved a groundbreaking 2019 ballot initiative making adult possession of psilocybin the city's lowest law enforcement priority and prohibiting the use of public money to pursue such cases.
A resolution that the Seattle City Council unanimously approved in October likewise urges police to leave psychedelic users alone, but its reach is broader than the Denver initiative's. It covers noncommercial "cultivation" and "sharing" as well as possession, and it applies to "any living, fresh, dried, or processed plant or fungal material, including teas or powders, that may contain currently scheduled or analog psychoactive indolamines, tryptamines, or phenethylamines, including, but not limited to, psilocybin mushrooms, ayahuasca tea, mescaline, and iboga."
Although Seattle's resolution endorses "full decriminalization" of "entheogen-related activities," it does not affect state penalties for producing, distributing, or possessing psychedelics. Under Washington law, psychedelics such as LSD, psilocybin, mescaline, and dimethyltryptamine are still classified as Schedule I drugs, meaning they are banned for all purposes. Low-level possession is a gross misdemeanor, which carries a maximum penalty of a year in jail and a $1,000 fine. A bill introduced in February 2021 would eliminate penalties for possessing "personal use amounts" of controlled substances, including psychedelics.
A ballot initiative that Detroit voters overwhelmingly approved in November made "personal possession and therapeutic use" of natural psychedelics by adults "the city's lowest law-enforcement priority." While the initiative purported to "decriminalize" those drugs "to the fullest extent permitted under Michigan law," low-level possession remains a misdemeanor, punishable by up to a year in jail and a $2,000 fine.
A Michigan bill introduced in September 2021 would decriminalize possession and use of entheogenic substances, along with their noncommercial manufacture and delivery. The bill covers plants or fungi containing dimethyltryptamine, ibogaine, mescaline, psilocybin, and psilocin.
The year before Seattle and Detroit backed psychedelic tolerance, the city councils of Ann Arbor, Michigan; Oakland, California; and Santa Cruz, California, enacted similar measures. Also in 2020, Washington, D.C., voters approved quasi-decriminalization of entheogenic plants and fungi by a 50-point margin.
Oregon voters went further in November 2020 by passing a ballot initiative aimed at establishing state-licensed "psilocybin service centers" where adults can legally consume the drug under the supervision of a "facilitator" after completing a "preparation session." Another Oregon ballot initiative approved in the same election decriminalized low-level possession of all drugs, including psilocybin and other psychedelics
Oral CBD Prevented COVID-19 Infection in Real-World Patients, Study Suggests
While not a substitute for vaccines, "CBD has the potential to prevent infections, such as breakthrough infections," the study's lead author said.

Cannabidiol—the non-psychoactive cannabis compound better known as CBD—is a potent blocker of SARS-CoV-2 replication in human cells, new research shows. Not only that, but a survey of real-world patients taking prescribed CBD found a “significant” negative relationship between CBD consumption and COVID-19 infection.
As detailed in a paper published Thursday in the peer-reviewed journal Science Advances by a team of 33 researchers at the University of Chicago and University of Louisville, a survey of 1,212 U.S. patients taking prescribed CBD found that people taking 100 milligrams-per-milliliter oral doses of CBD returned positive COVID-19 tests at much lower rates than control groups with similar medical backgrounds who did not take CBD.
According to the study, all of the patients were people who had seizure-related conditions, which CBD is often prescribed to treat. Of this group, 6.2 percent returned positive COVID-19 tests or a diagnosis, compared to 8.9 percent in the control group. Among a smaller subset of patients who were likely taking CBD on the dates of their first COVID-19 test, the effect was even more pronounced: Only 4.9 percent of people taking CBD became infected with COVID-19, compared to 9 percent in the control group.
"Our results suggest that CBD and its metabolite 7-OH-CBD can block SARS-CoV-2 infection at early and even later stages of infection,” the study states.
Besides looking at real-world data, the scientists conducted lab tests. Lead author Dr. Marsha Rosner, a professor in the Ben May Department for Cancer Research at the University of Chicago, and her team treated human lung cells for two hours with CBD before infecting them with SARS-CoV-2, and left them for 48 hours while monitoring them for the presence of the COVID spike protein. They found that CBD inhibits the replication of genes required for the growth and spread of the virus throughout the body. They performed the same tests on three COVID-19 variants and found the same result.
“As a bottom line, what this says is that CBD has the potential to prevent infections, such as breakthrough infections, which might be one of the most useful applications,” Rosner told Motherboard.
The researchers strove to identify the mechanism through which CBD inhibited infection; while they found a negligible effect at the point at which viruses enter cells, they found CBD to be “very effective” at preventing protein expression in cells two and six hours after infection, and “partially effective” at doing so 15 hours after infection. They also found that CBD’s metabolite, 7-OH-CBD—the compound created in the body when CBD is processed in the liver and intestines—has similar antiviral effect and was non-toxic to cells.
The study offers strong evidence that CBD can treat and slow the transmission of COVID-19. It comes just one week after an initial revelation out of Oregon State University and Oregon Health & Sciences University that cannabis precursors (the acids that, when combusted, turn into CBD and THC) can halt the infection of cells by SARS-CoV-2 in lab tests.

A Q&A With the Scientist Who Discovered Cannabis Can Prevent COVID-19
AUDREY CARLETON

The authors of that study were careful to note that cannabis-derived products, while a potentially important public health intervention, are no substitute for vaccination campaigns. However, in the all-out fight to end the pandemic, they could end up becoming a much-needed supplement.
“Despite recent vaccine availability, SARS-CoV-2 is still spreading rapidly, highlighting the need for alternative treatments, especially for populations with limited inclination or access to vaccines,” the University of Chicago researchers write in their study.
“What we don't want… is people just running out and thinking, ‘I can take CBD, and then I don't have to get vaccinated or I don't have to be masked,’” Rosner said. “This is what we really don't want to see.”
It seems like there’s a flood of scientific news about the promise of cannabis in preventing or treating COVID-19. Last week, a different group of researchers at the University of Waterloo in Ontario, Canada, identified CBD as a primer to a process called apoptosis, or natural cell death—in the case of COVID-19, their research suggests that CBD spurs on the death of infected cells, stopping viral spread in its tracks and slowing the transmission to others.
The studies, in tandem, contribute to a growing body of research identifying cannabis as a tool in the global COVID-19 response arsenal. Rosner and her team first laid the ground for this work in March of 2021, when they identified cannabidiol as a potential treatment for COVID-19 for its ability to hamper viral replication in lung cells in a lab. As detailed in a pre-print, the team found that in quantities similar to those that are prescribed as treatment for epilepsy, CBD inhibits the replication of genes that are required for viruses to spread throughout the body.
Rosner and her team caution against conflating their findings with the suggestion to use recreational cannabis as a treatment for COVID-19: THC may inhibit CBD’s antiviral effects, the authors note, and smoking is bad for your lungs. Without clinical trials, they also can’t recommend that people go out and buy CBD at a dispensary.
“We strongly caution against the temptation to take CBD in presently available formulations including edibles, inhalants or topicals as a preventative or treatment therapy at this time,” the authors write. “Especially without the knowledge of a rigorous randomized clinical trial with this natural product.”
Rosner notes that it’s impossible to know what CBD dosage and formula will be most effective at treating COVID-19 infection until her research moves into clinical trials on humans. After all, Rosner said, “we can only do so much in mice; we really need to do this in people.”
“We think it has a potential, both to be a preventative—so for instance, you can imagine that I'm going traveling and CBD is something that, if we can make the right product accessible, it should be widely available, it should be something people could anticipate needing,” she said. “Or you go and get tested and immediately start taking it. The hope is that it would prevent more serious disease, but we don't know yet. And we would need a clinical trial.”

Biden Administration COVID rumor
I guess this is fifth hand information so I will title it as a rumor. My son has a friend who is married. His wife has a sister who works for the White House chief of staff.
According to that sister, the Biden Administration is worried about the midterm elections (go figure). They don't want COVID to be another headwind. They fear that the GOP will continue to hammer that Democrats are the party that wants to lock us down. They realize that people are fed up with COVID restrictions. They also realize that nothing works against Omicron spread and everybody has figured that out. Finally, they realize Omicron COVID will burn out quickly.
Future White House messaging, therefor, will be to gradually send out more optimistic statements on how the pandemic is progressing and not issuing any more government mandates.
I read that the CDC head, Walensky, is to be the COVID message bearer and that she has been working with media experts. Her recent statements have been more positive.

"I be here, bossman- shaking the tree, bossman..." (cool hand luke fodder)
quiet buying is best.....better to inch up insidiously! At some tipping point we already know what can happen to eps. This qtr or next. INFLATION will bring folks back to plasma.
same here-----but i rate any of those three a potential home run....so i try to calm myself as they dip.
as we or i accumulate further, there simply has to be a (PAYS) tipping point for cash gained from plasma once more------timing this moment will make riches or frustrations....and selling prematurely...or buying with genius. Our edge, me and you, chillar- and the other old timers? We know this mgmt can and did make things work before. most probably WE sleep more soundly at night owning here when newbies might not. And that is my UNABASHED spin for my PAYS shares i own and ADD TO.
Here is our temporary problem- the young haven't come back yet (for the money- or out of MSM-driven fearmongering)--------BUT THEY WILL COME BACK.
Fox News Flash top headlines for January 11
The American Red Cross warned this week that it is facing a "national blood crisis."
The organization said its "worst blood shortage in over a decade" is "posing a concerning risk to patient care" and that doctors have been "forced to make difficult decisions about who receives blood transfusions and who will need to wait until more products become available. Blood and platelet donations are critically needed to help prevent further delays in vital medical treatments."
WORST EMERGENCY BLOOD SHORTAGE SINCE 2015 CAUSED BY PANDEMIC: AMERICAN RED CROSS
The contributing factors to the crisis include a 10% decline in overall blood donor turnout since March 2020, a 62% drop in college and high school blood drives due to the COVID-19 pandemic, ongoing blood drive cancellations because of illness, staffing limitations and weather-related closures and a surge of COVID-19 cases and an active flu season that "may compound the already bad situation."
"At a time when many businesses and organizations across the country are experiencing pandemic challenges, the Red Cross is no different. We are all learning how to live in this new environment, how we spend our time, where we work, how we give back, how we make a difference in the lives of others – donating blood must continue to be part of it," the Red Cross wrote.
Officials say Minnesota's blood bank donations are at a 10-year low and regional blood donations are down 10%, according to Red Cross spokeswoman Tonia Teasley.
Minnesota Public Radio News reported Memorial Blood Centers' Dr. Jed Gorlin pointed out that car accidents and violence are also factors in the recent shortage in the state.
"We have had more penetrating trauma, gunshot wounds and knife wounds, as of the end of August than we did in all of 2019," he said. "So, sadly this is not just a problem of decreased donations. This is also increased usage."
"While some types of medical care can wait, others can’t," Dr. Pampee Young, chief medical officer of the Red Cross, said in a statement "Hospitals are still seeing accident victims, cancer patients, those with blood disorders like sickle cell disease, and individuals who are seriously ill who all need blood transfusions to live even as omicron cases surge across the country. We’re doing everything we can to increase blood donations to ensure every patient can receive medical treatments without delay, but we cannot do it without more donors. We need the help of the American people."
BLOOD CLOT SYMPTOMS TO LOOK OUT FOR
The Red Cross – which supplies 40% of the nation's blood supply – has had to limit blood product distributions to hospitals as a result of the shortage, and some hospitals may not receive one in four blood products they need.
The organization said that there has been less than a one-day supply of critical blood types in recent weeks.
January is National Blood Donor Month and the Red Cross, America's Blood Centers and AABB cautioned that if the nation's blood supply does not stabilize soon, "life-saving blood may not be available for some patients when it is needed."
Blood can take up to three days to be tested, processed and made available for patients.
More than 16 million units of blood and blood products are transfused annually with more than 45,000 units needed daily.
Individuals who have received a COVID-19 vaccine currently authorized for emergency use in the U.S. are able to donate blood and platelets as long as they are symptom-free and feeling well at the time of donation.

Donors of all blood types – especially type O - are urged to make an appointment now to give in the weeks ahead.
Only an estimated 38% of the U.S. population is eligible to donate blood at any given time. However, less than 10% of that eligible population actually donates each year.

nearing 52 week lows...................i'll wait until i see the whites of their eyes............aND I WILL BUY. sTILL HOLDING MY CORE---DAMN KEYBOARD----------------TPNL/PAYS ACTED THE SAME WAY IN THE BEGINNING. sorry about the caps..........i'll be needing a new keyboard real soon.............
shhhh! Don't tell anyone about this tiny float. Go back 10 years and see what a tiny float can do in 3 days.....if crude provides. Don't tell anyone....until i accumulate enough! lol
when i was in college, we HUSTLED ANYHING WE COULD to fuel a better time
LOOKING FOR SOME STARVING COLLEGE STUDENTS!---Selling plasma is a "woke" thing to do! Help's "them". Help's "you".-----------------------------------------------------(my mrdecember123 commercial for PAYS plasma-selling if i was ceo) tongue firmly in cheek, folks. Not to worry.
now THERE is the glass half full pual we need!----------But you see, i'm far from objective. Me and lactose simply don't get along. BABYF attracted me accordingly. But just for giggles....i'm half german and half greek---american....and i can barely get along with myself. So there is always that, too. (sigh)
can't say- but i sense a growing cynicism and apathy now from citizens, fauci has rip-sawed messaging so much. Blind trust in HIM is sure waning.-----------------and MSM has also made a mess of any consistent messaging about covid, too. Human nature tends to start dismissing new nformation when it is so irrationally inconsistent so. Tests work. now tests don't always work. Bla bla bla. I sense americans fast tiring of the brouhaha. I believe pays comes back THIS year accordingly. It's been a long wait- but damn, INFLATION will MAKE many more sell plasma than before inevitably now. Govy has lost ABSOLUTE CONTROL they enjoyed initially.
lol- well, i'm 66------------that would/could be one magnanimous retirement. (sigh)----------------My mom's name was HOPE. I named my daughter HOPE accordingly. The personal nurse of my favorite doctor is named HOPE, too!----------------So pray allow me to share my great karma. This crazy mrdecember123 entity has GREAT HOPE for his solid investment inspired by chillar here. God bless
bound to be an ebb and flow since this run has so many newbies who must learn to feel confident in mgmt like we oldsters still are---my hypothesis--------------------it will be a far slower ride this time, folks. Plasma is a wonderful idea for INFLATION thinking. Know what you own. The newbies simply need our kind of confidence. we'll see. This may prove to be one tough year finding safe places to simply sit and wait. I rate pays a decent option.
i have damn good call outs, too- over the years-----many multibaggers just llike you. And i'm here fully looking for another one. FOBIF long- adding at my leisure STILL.
hope so---all in---not selling nary one share...but pain is still pain
house of pain
as you said, too- tax loss selling is dripping away
Say janey, isn't babyf a niche company whereas nestles has its business fingers in just about anything and everything?-----------------What drew me to babyf is the lactose-free niche. Their product is perfect to thrive there.----------------------Should babyf ever get to china, no real geopolitical issues, i suspect like others. And the market of the lactose-allergic is immense. (food for thought)
great write up- almost word for word what i posted a while back.....well, almost word for word-----i missed the interest rates advantage going forward.....
ezzra, i'm now 66 years old- lived all over the world (healthy and happy i think)- and i've had a book-writing interesting life, i suspect. So here i end up living with three thirty year olds who do nothing but go to work at low level jobs- go nowhere ever- and "game". They "game" and role play all night long sometimes going to work after their binges. Every spare second of every day and night: "gaming". But what blows my damn mind is how unambitious they are in the real world. In their virtual world is where they prefer to live. They have no real world friend interactions- only by computer screen. I long ago gave up trying to change their minds. But i used to be a drug counselor decades ago and "gaming" seems one whole lot like heroin addiction.-------I am struck by how realistic role-playing gaming is......i liken it to exchanging real life for a virtual life. They build things. They fight wars. They create universes. They have virtual personalities. But i do wonder what these new modern "virtual" women and men can ever really DO.------------------What happens to these zombies if the internet goes away due to war/weather/fate? Chairs kill muscles. Chairs weaken backs. Screens injure eyes. Far worse: no real life experience or in person social interactions with others at such a mature age. Scary- all of that.------------------All of that being said. I like fobif a lot! lol
chillar, i still believe in these guys---------i used to be a drug counsellor decades ago-----------------and one thing i never forgot about the streets and the grand folks who live in those streets-------sure if push comes to shove they deal dope to get by--------but for a mega proportion of that same group, dealing was below them---selling plasma was an honorable way to pay the bills. Covid scared the lot! Government propaganda has scared EVERYONE similarly. But.....plasma was honorable money earned! Mom's. Dad's. That lesson about poorer folks psychology stuck with me. I believe in what pays offers as a result. BOTH sides benefit equally! We offer and lend venue for the service for profit- they are granted access to honorable income to aid their low income days. We are not greedy. We are not capitalizing here at PAYS. We HELP MAN AND WOMAN KIND with a cool service.
pray allow me even this early-on to wish you, chilar, and all of yours one merry christmas. And if mgmt is reading, pray allow me to extend those christmas wishes to all of them, too. God bless.
i reckon so-----------my expectations have been wrong for too long. I had thought that by now folks would up plasma-selling due to inflation...and covid slowing....If it goes much lower......i'll just shut my eyes. T'is the season to be cheerful, not sad.----------------------------------------------------------I do think it pertinent to add that ALL of my specs have dripped down in near tandem.
do you remember superballs?--if you're as old as i am you do. Those suckers defied gravity bouncing so! lol-------------BABYF is a serious longterm investment- superballs be damned! lol
i'd be more worried, but every hotshot spec i have simply can't get going-----------------momma told me there might be months like this (sigh). I'm stubborn long here.
thinking pure soberly and conservatively- i reckon it will take TWO consecutive eps .04/.05/.06 qtrs to get pps where it should be....i am patient- but by winter of next year i fully expect pays to be one whole lot higher...........History matters. These guys know how to make money.
i feel smashed here------------which means it's time to keep adding. ANYONE who has followed pays for years clearly understands the investing opportunity here at these prices. Few companies can SURPRISE more by eps than this one in THIS sector. If not for covid panic.............bla bla bla. But folks are burning out on panic and fear. Buy pays now- and wait. This is the ultimate INFLATION stock. JMHO
chillar knows baby.
when i posted it here, i couldn't remember the name----but you got it-----------it was grifols--------it's running on the old alfred hitchcock series show there. That's all i knew until you posted that.
Great snoop'in around! Grifols is that company with ads on ROKU about selling plasma i mentioned a while back.----------------------------------------------- I still believe we sit in one fine sleeper here. INFLATION STOCKS should start being sought out soon. And selling plasma runs hand in hand with tougher times. Both parties win! Free earned money for folks in need. Wonderful profitable business serving that need.
