Battery fires prompt govt probe of Chevy Volt
..
WASHINGTON (AP) — New fires involving the lithium-ion batteries in General Motors Co.'s Chevrolet Volt have prompted an investigation to assess the risk of fire in the electric car after a serious crash, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said Friday.
One Volt battery pack that was being closely monitored following a government crash test caught fire Thursday, the safety administration said in a statement. Another recently crash-tested battery emitted smoke and sparks, the statement said.
GM, which was informed of the investigation on Friday, said in a statement that the Volt "is safe and does not present undue risk as part of normal operation or immediately after a severe crash."
The latest fires are in addition to a battery fire in a crash-tested Volt six months ago.
NHTSA learned of a possible fire risk involving damaged Volt batteries when a fire erupted in a Volt that was being stored in a parking lot of a test facility in Burlington, Wis. The fire was severe enough to cause several other vehicles parked nearby to catch fire as well.
The car had been subjected to a side-impact crash test more than three weeks earlier, on May 12, during which the battery was punctured and its coolant line ruptured.
Last week's tests of three battery packs were designed to replicate the May test. In that test, the Volt was subjected to a simulated side-impact collision into a narrow object like a tree or pole followed by a rollover, the agency said.
The first battery tested last week didn't catch fire. But a battery test on Nov. 17 initially experienced a temporary temperature increase, and on Thursday caught fire while being monitored. Another battery tested on Nov. 18, which was rotated 180 degrees within hours after the test, began to smoke and emit sparks shortly after the rotation.
The tests were conducted by NHTSA and the Energy and Defense departments at a defense facility near Hampton Roads, Va.
So far, no fires have been reported in Volts involved in roadway crashes, NHTSA said. More than 5,000 of the vehicles have been sold.
It's too soon to tell whether the investigation will lead to a recall of any vehicles or parts, but the government will ensure consumers are informed promptly if that occurs, the agency said.
With its OnStar safety communications systems a part of the car, "GM knows real time about any crash significant enough to potentially compromise battery integrity," the automaker said. "Since July, GM has implemented a post-crash protocol that includes the depowering of the battery after a severe crash, returning the battery to a safe and low-powered state."
Electric vehicles are critical to President Barack Obama's plans to reduce U.S. dependence on foreign oil. He has called for putting 1 million of the vehicles on the road by 2015.
The Volt and Nissan's Leaf, with more than 8,000 cars on the road in the U.S., are among the first mass-marketed plug-in electric cars. They went on sale in the 2011 model year. Other automakers are also working on electric vehicles.
Safety testing hasn't raised concerns about electric vehicles other than the Volt, NHTSA said. But the agency is asking manufacturers who have electric cars on the market, or who plan to introduce electric vehicles in the near future, for more detailed information on their battery testing as well as what procedures they have established for discharging and handling batteries, including recommendations for reducing fire risks.
"NHTSA continues to believe that electric vehicles have incredible potential to save consumers money at the pump, help protect the environment, create jobs and strengthen national security by reducing our dependence on oil," the agency said.
After the first battery fire, GM officials complained that NHTSA did not drain the battery of energy as called for under the automaker's crash procedures. NHTSA normally drains fuel from gasoline-powered cars after crash tests, they said.
Lithium-ion batteries, which are rechargeable, have been the subject of several recalls of consumer electronics. Millions of laptop batteries made by Sony Corp. for Apple Inc., Dell Inc., Lenovo Group Ltd. and other PC makers were recalled in 2006 and 2007 after it was discovered that they could overheat and ignite.
The Federal Aviation Administration issued a warning to airlines about the potential for fires in cargo containing lithium-ion and non-rechargeable lithium metal batteries after a United Parcel Service plane crashed near Dubai last year, killing both pilots. The plane, which was on fire, was carrying thousands of lithium batteries.
Incorrectly packaged, damaged or overheated batteries can catch fire, the FAA said. Fires involving lithium-ion batteries can reach 1,100 degrees, close to the melting point of aluminum, a key material in airplane construction. Lithium-metal battery fires are far hotter, capable of reaching 4,000 degrees.
GM and NHTSA have pointed out that cars with gasoline-powered engines are susceptible to fires after a crash.
In the event of a crash, NHTSA's advice to consumers is to do the same thing they would do in a gasoline-powered car — get out of the vehicle and move a safe distance away. The agency also recommends against storing a severely damaged electric car in a garage or near other vehicles.

What will DSM premix in South America?
Two new premix plants were just opened in South America. Is this tied to NTRZ? Maybe , maybe not, but interesting as Irgovel is now stabilized at the same time.

A great time for multinational blue chips
I like this board better all the time as I feel that multinational blue chips are positioned well for the current rapid 3rd world coming of age. It is tough for small and medium sized companies to move into countries in Asia, South America and Africa. They don't have the market know how, legal expertise, or financial clout.
For an example of what is happening, I own a small company that has partnered with Sudzuker, DSM, and Alothon(Spin off of Deutsche Bank), all 3 are European power houses, for expansion into South America, Asia, and Africa. So, now these big companies are collecting some of the profits from the small and medium companies as well as their own sales in these under developed countries. This has been going on all along, but, my gut tells me it is happening like never before.
Africa next?

NTRZ must pay back about 9 million to Alonthon for Alothon helping Z with it's share of the financing of Irgovel. Plus Halpern Capital can call back $550,000 in loans in December.
So, something is set up for some financing of some sort in early to mid December. I have no idea what it will be. At the CC Short and Leo were excited about the 6 and 1/2 financing from 2 Brazil banks in conjunction with a Brazil government backed program. But I doubt that would pay back the Creditors or halpern Capital.
One Yahoo occasional poster who I feel may have info is buying. I hope something really big is coming that will take care of all of NTRZ's money problems. A convertible preferred deal with a big money player would be nice. Alothon is the only company with knowledge of in stalling Z's equipment. I'd take them as a big partner and maybe Brazil money is not apart of what is coming or a combination. What ever it is I have a feeling it will be game changing, or at least I hope it will be.
NTRZ/NewChaper/HerbalScience/DSM--good fit
A story about synthetic verse organic vitamins brought up my thought of how great for DSM a deal would be with NTRZ, NewChapter, and HerbalScience. Maybe DSM is big enough that they don't need HerbalScience and can make extracts themselves. But, organic vitamins would really be an asset for DSM, and NTRZ's nutraceutricals speak for themselves here.
But let me remind you all of two trademarked products NTRZ has that they have NEVER talked about, Every Body and Healthy Body, look at the trademark page and they are right behind BiFlexin that Short did say was coming when I mentioned that one at a CC to him.
http://www.trademarkia.com/company-nutracea-888189-page-1-2
I did mention this before the DSM announcement but again, NewChapter has products I saw at WholeFoods called Every Man and Every Woman, and others similar.
http://www.newchapter.com/multi-vitamins/every-man
http://www.newchapter.com/multi-vitamins/every-woman
The fact that NewChapter has organic vitamins and DSM is one of the biggest vitamion producers in the world make them a good fit. The FACT that NTRZ has products in the wing that ring(Every Man Every Woman--Every Body Healthy Body) the same in name tells me maybe we have a nutraceutical deal with DSM coming, and maybe NewChapter and Herbal Science will be included.
If so, since NewChapter in in Whole Foods, it might gain NTRZ immediate access to Whole Foods, not just for the nutraceuticals, but also for the new refined Irgovel oil?
I'm just thinking out loud her. Don't buy stock off this post, but is does fit, don't ya think?

For those of you new, NTRZ is not just a food company that turns low grade animal feed and waste into the most nutritious food pound per pound on the planet, stabilized rice bran, but NTRZ is also getting into nutraceuticals and pahrma. They had a firm, Herbal Science making deep extracts to be used in nutraceuticals and pharma. They had three main targets, joint pain, diabetes, and AIDS(Immune system). There are natural parts of rice bran very beneficial for some diseases.
A NutraCea diabetes patent posted in German at the European patent office was just found by another poster, bigbass. Definitely for a reason, as this is a current USA patent from a while back.. My guess this is in advance of a nutraceutical/pharma deal with DSM. DSM is the best fit, but Short said we'd have a deal with a partner of DSM or Beneo. I suspect that was a cover statement. he could not come out and say DSM. It was touted many times that NTRZ had product made from Herbal Science extracts for a pain product, diabetes, and AIDS(immune system).

Diedrich coffee a while back sold Gloria Jeans Coffee Beans and got into premium coffees and went from .31 to $20 in two months and was bought out at $30 a few months later. NTRZ has the story like JAMN, but 10 times better. Turning low grade animal feed and waste into human grade food with a shelf life of over a year is a monster story. NTRZ is a "Green" company as no land, energy or water to grow new food and most of the nutrients of the rice kernel are in the milled off bran.
NTRZ has a perfect set up starting in mid January.
1. Creditors will be paid off, possibly the Chinese will want a plant then?
2. The Beneo-Remy co-branded products will be shipped
3. Rice Lecithin will be available
4. Rumor that big meat companies using Brazil's RiBran
5. Traction in all other NTRZ human food applications increasing
Then in Q2
6. Small pet food available
7. Short mentioned a PR about "Fast to market" block buster Rice Protein
8. Nutraceutical deal or who knows what else Short and or DSM is up to.

Agriculture key to future water, energy needs
World-Grain.com, Nov. 17, 2011
by Staff
ROME, ITALY and BONN, GERMANY — As pressure on the world's water resources reaches unsustainable levels in an increasing number of regions, a "business-as-usual" approach to economic development and natural resource management will no longer be possible, the United Nation’s Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) said on Nov. 17.
Agriculture will be key to the implementation of sustainable water management, the organization told attendees at an international meeting on water, energy and food security being held in Bonn, Germany.
Speaking on the sidelines at the Bonn 2011 Nexus Conference, FAO Assistant Director-General for Natural Resources Alexander Mueller, said, "Tackling the challenges of food security, economic development and energy security in a context of ongoing population growth will require a renewed and re-imagined focus on agricultural development. Agriculture can and should become the backbone of tomorrow's green economy."
The conference in Bonn has been convened by Germany's Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development as a lead up to the UN's "Rio+20" Conference on Sustainable development in June 2012. It brings together leading actors in economic development, natural resource management and environmental policy and the food and energy sectors to look for new approaches to managing the interconnections between water, energy and food.
FAO estimates that to feed a world population expected to number around 9 billion people in 2050, global food production will need to be increased by 70%. Global energy demand will increase by 36% by 2035, and competition for water between farming, cities and industry will continue to intensify as a result.
"It's time to stop treating food, water and energy as separate issues and tackle the challenge of intelligently balancing the needs of these three sectors, building on synergies, finding opportunities to reduce waste and identifying ways that water can be shared and reused, rather than competed for," Mueller said.
According to Mueller, agriculture lies at the center of the "water-energy-food nexus.
"When you start looking at the issue of how we are going to provide food, water, light, heat and other services and products for 9 billion people, it becomes quite clear that agriculture is perhaps the linchpin of everything," he said. "If we have the political will and farsightedness, we can make agriculture the engine of tomorrow's green economy. Climate-smart farming systems that make efficient use of resources like water, land, and energy must become the basis of tomorrow's agricultural economy."

Lecithin Benefits | Lecithin Supplements, Information, Uses, Advantages, Facts
Lecithin is authorised as a food additive in the EU under the E-number E322.
Lecithin is used in food as an emulsifier, instantiser, antioxidant and flavour protector, often providing a finishing touch that brings quality and excellence to many food products.
Its use as an emulsifier to keep water and fats from separating in chocolate and compound coatings is well-known, but lecithin is also used in e.g. margarine, bread products, ice cream and dairy products, infant formulas and convenience foods.
Lecithin is also used as a technological and nutritional component in dietetics, and in pharmaceutical products, animal feeds, cosmetics and the chemical and technical industries
Lecithin has been in commercial use for more than a century, but since the extraction process from egg yolk proved costly for certain applications lecithin is today not only extracted from egg (egg lecithin) but also from soybean (soy lecithin) and other sources such as sunflowerseed, rapeseed and maize.

The Much to Many Benefits of Lecithin
http://www.nutritional-supplements-health-guide.com/benefits-of-lecithin.html
Lecithin contains all the phosphatides found naturally in cell membranes. Lecithin works by increasing the cell membrane ratio of phosphatidylcholine/phosphatidylethanolamine to cholesterol, main-taining cell membrane structure and increasing cell membrane fluidity
The omega-3 fatty acids in fish oil are vital to brain cell structure and function. Based on the brain’s critical need for omega-3 fatty acids, scientists have developed a compound that takes the DHA found in fish oil and binds it to a lecithin extract that has been shown to reduce the risk of cognitive dysfunction in the elderly.
At one time, soy lecithin was an enormously popular supplement. People would literally eat lecithin granules or sprinkle it on their cereal every morning. With the discovery of extraction methods that concentrate its active constituents, lecithin has fallen out of favor, since consumers can now obtain its cognition-enhancing benefits in a pill.
One of lecithin’s most effective brain-protecting extracts is phosphatidylserine, a naturally occurring compound found in every cell membrane in the body. Phosphatidyl-serine supports healthy levels of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, facilitates brain cell energy meta-bolism, and provides structural support for brain cell membranes. While phosphatidylserine has demonstrated impressive results in clinical trials, you will soon learn how combining it with DHA can improve its efficacy even more.
Several studies confirm the benefits of phosphatidylserine as a key component in fostering healthy brain function. Additional studies suggest that phosphatidylserine is helpful not only in treating cognitive decline, but also in avoiding its onset.
Brain Cells Need DHA and Phosphatidylserine
Phosphatidylserine is the major lipid required to maintain the structural integrity of brain cells. Part of the unique function that DHA plays in protecting the brain involves its role in facilitating the synthesis of structural lipids (such as phosphatidylserine) in nerve cell membranes.16
In the brain, DHA is enzymatically combined with phosphatidylserine (and glyceryl-phosphoryl-choline) to form cell membrane phospholipids needed for nerve cell expansion.17 Substantial laboratory research over the past two decades suggests that phosphatidylserine’s ability to improve cognitive skills is greatly increased in the presence of DHA.
Brain cell membranes are highly enriched with DHA (when DHA is physically available). Dietary DHA deficiency can result in neurological disorders such as depression, memory loss, and dementia.18 Brain cell survival is highly dependent on the availability of DHA to facilitate the incorporation of phosphatidylserine in its membrane.19
Scientists have discovered that DHA attaches itself to phosphatidylserine molecules, and acts as an important ally in the promotion of brain cell energy production. A number of brain researchers, such as Dr. Norman Salem, head of the Laboratory of Membrane Biochemistry and Biophysics at the National Institutes of Health, are convinced that phosphatidylserine with attached DHA is among the most critically important molecules for healthy brain function. Scientists believe that phosphatidylserine supplementation works optimally if DHA levels are kept commensurately high.20

SUMN, Europe just approved it. Another one in China is GLGL. Geez their sales are crashing and earnings surprises are huge. I don't know if I can trust a Chinese company.

SUWN has been losing sales as well. I think the big boyz(Cargill) out positioned them. If I owned SUWN now I'd sell. SMKT and NTRZ look much better.
But Rhino, Suwn has been a major disappointment. You and I were trading it in 2007 at a higher level that the current price. And since then the USA is using it.I rfemember one day you beat be in by a couple of hours and paid 10 cents less.

Z could drift sideways til the end of the year. But an announcement of any kind could happen at any time. A Brazilian meat company using De-oild bran as meat filler could be huge. Margie said one has been waiting for Irgovel to get the product out, and it is here. The next news I expect is when we pay the creditors back in mid January. I have told my family for 5 years. Now for the first time I am telling them to buy NTRZ. If the stock is $4 a year from today i would not be surprised. If it is less than $1 I will be surprised. Everything will fall together in 2012.
Margie did say also, "I'm particularly excited about the rice lecithin. IF you know anything about that market, you know that this will be a HUGE product. Soy lecitin is horrible and GMO'd and bad for you. Rice lecithin will be the ONLY alternative and there are thousands of companies that will switch over if the product has the properties of soy or better, which I truly anticipate will be the case." _ Rice Lecithin will be out for sale in January.
