Best Buy to buy majority stake in China retailer
Friday May 12, 2:26 AM EDT
SHANGHAI (Reuters) - Consumer electronics retailer Best Buy Co. Inc. (BBY) said on Friday it would acquire a majority stake in a Chinese appliance retailer for $180 million, giving it a foothold in a market dominated by local players.
Best Buy said the purchase of Jiangsu Five Star Appliance Co. Ltd., China's fourth-largest appliance and consumer electronics retailer, would give it control of the Chinese firm's 136 outlets.
The transaction had received approval from the Chinese authorities and was expected to close in June, it said in a statement.
China's $55 billion consumer electronics market is currently dominated by local players GOME Electrical Appliance Holding Ltd. , Suning Appliance and China Paradise Electronics Retail Ltd. .
"In addition to our new work with Five Star, we are moving forward with our plans to open our first Best Buy retail store in China this year," Robert Willett, CEO of Best Buy International, said in a statement.
The U.S. giant had previously said it intended to open its first store in Shanghai, but has yet to disclose any details.
Best Buy already operates three sourcing offices in China -- in Shanghai, Beijing and Shenzhen -- and has established relationships with manufacturers seeking to gain broader distribution in China and North America.
According to Best Buy, Five Star was founded in 1998. The Chinese firm has 12,000 employees and is headquartered in Nanjing, capital of eastern Jiangsu province.
Five Star posted revenues of nearly $700 million in 2005, up more than 50 percent from the year earlier, Best Buy said.

I was considering switching to Ameritrade a while back. It looks like its time to revisit that thought again.
Thanks EZ. It won't hurt to try.
How did you get your shares unrestricted? Did your broker do it for you at no charge?
My broker is Fidelity and the shares are being held with them. They want to charge me a $300 fee. Should I have them send me the certs and then deal directly with the transfer agent? I would assume the transfer agent is going to charge a fee to get them unrestricted.
Anyone else having a problem getting their ETLK shares unrestricted? Fidelity has told me the shares are "restricted as in they are not registered under the Securities Act of 1933." Their policy on such restricted shares is that it has to trade over $1.00 to get them unrestricted otherwise they charge a clearing fee of $300. That fee is far more than my shares are worth.
I don't have any experience with restricted shares so any help would be appreciated.
Exactly. eom
OT: MBR - Are you suggesting pit is bar1080?? Could very well be.
I find it amusing that I made one post last week about baseball and it got deleted immediately but today there are several posts about baseball and they don't get deleted.
I wish the board monitors here would be more consistent. Geez!
C'mon, you're overreacting. It's only 400 million more shares!
I agree. If we're still at .10, I won't be attending the meeting even if it's held in my backyard. At $1.00, name the place and I'll be there.
OT: doc - nice car but check out my ride.
What can I say, I'm bored today!

How can they screw this up for the second time??
You would think they would make absolutely sure to get it right after that first embarrassment.
OT: I wish the trade would have happened back then. Some fans would have sweetened the deal and traded their wife and kids to bring him to NY last year (not me though!). The Yankees no doubt would have won the WS with him here.
Good luck with the DBacks this year.
OT: Iman - speaking of the DBacks, I told you so about RJ!!
(Well, I was off by 7 months or so)

OT: Investorman - enjoy watching Randy Johnson in a D-Backs uniform as much as possible. Because if the team doesn't go on a tear soon, he'll be pitching for the Yankees this year.

OT: That is just Yankee fan wishful thinking......
MrEC - you must now have a billion shares of Hrct. Hope you're not putting all your eggs in one basket.
Those questions are sure to be answered on Thursday. Stay tuned.
I hope they get the recording right on Hrct's website this time.
boatRgirl - I was thinking the same about new buyers getting scared off and selling. Just when things were looking good for Hrct, something like this happens. Hoping it's nothing more than a bump in the road.

You're the man! Thanks for your work in getting this mess cleared up.
Mr Manahawkin -
Your post is not even worth the effort. But I'm dumbfounded as to how you assume that I don't support Hrct. Re-read my last few posts again and maybe you'll come to a different conclusion.
By the way, I've owned Hrct shares since July 1999 and currently hold a good amount of shares. What about you?????
There is a point but obviously you don't get it. Revenues do not automatically lead to profits. That's all I'm trying to say. I can type it slower if you'd like, LOL man.
C'mon Hrct, show us the profits!
...and those are my last words on this subject.
And so I'll repeat...
Revenues mean nothing without profits.
If all we needed was revenues, Carrie would have never dismantled the company. Hrct had plenty of revenues.
Of course you can have one without the other. You can have revenues without profits but you can't have profits without revenue.
Elementary, my dear Watson.
As we all know well, revenues mean nothing without profits. We've been down that road before and notice where that took us.
When we see some significant PROFITS, the shareprice will move up. And that's not JMO, that's a fact.
That makes me feel so much better about HRCT and its plunging shareprice.
commoname - that was a good analysis of the current situation.
We'll find out soon enough if Carrie is the right person to turn things around and lives up to the hype displayed by others on this board.
That should put yesterday's debate to rest.
I wonder how the negiotations to get out of the purchase agreement are going.
commoname - I hope you're right about Hrct still having a chance. I, like many on this board, have a good amount invested in this company and have been here for what seems like dozens of corporate "changes in direction".
Are we being told the truth about future prospects? That's the key question and only time will tell. But I can tell you I feel more insecure and less informed about Hrct than I have been since I took a position in this company over 5 years ago. Maybe that's a good thing instead of buying into the overhyping and shenanigans of former management.
With that said, I'll either ride this ship into the sunset or sink with it. There's no sense in getting out now.
Is today the day we plunge into single digits??
Man, it sure is great to be a HRCT shareholder these days!
LOL.
Now that was funny. (I'm laughing at your post not the state of happenings at HRCT.)
Be well Cabby, sorry to see you go. But I do understand and respect your decision to sell.
Hopefully this ship will get steered in the right direction and you have reason to jump onboard sometime in the future.
Good luck on that early retirement!
Nobody could (except Tin-berry?) so I guess that means all or most of us are in the dark.
Yes, that's it. It's the MM's doing their dirty work on HRCT again! Can't they just leave us alone?? LOL
I have DSL here at work. I will try it with my cable connection at home tonight. Anyone with cable having problems?
I got past the "hello, hello" part and the recording is very choppy. Only bits and pieces can be heard. Anyone else having this problem?
Has HRCT lost the partial summary judgement? Sorry for the ignorance but I've been away from this board for a few weeks.
