Hey Dave...just want to say that you're an asshole. Clearly if it wasn't for the idiotic rule of banning me from a specific stock discussion board there wouldn't be a need for another account, and just to think I actually considered renewing a subscription here.
lol! My post to that board was direct, on-topic and devoid of insult or injury to the participants, but I see you jumped all over the Lieutenant Kije alias because I pointed out to you that he was actually someone else. Did you a favor didn't I?
Basically Dave...fuck you. Take this account and delete it as well. I will not engage in discussion with you or a negotiation over something patently ridiculous and a sure sign you have no life following accounts this closely given that I haven't posted under this alias for nearly a month nor violated the TOU for much longer than that let alone post all that frequently.
The idea of this Jailhouse is the most pathetic attempt I've seen on the part of human beings to regulate behaviour among grown men and women that I've ever seen. We've had that discussion too, but little has changed and never will with you.
I'd like to know when Apple is gonna start offering these movie downloads on other stores outside the U.S. Namely Canada. Can't believe it would take this long to get the same access and honestly if Apple is going to start selling the same hardware he should be offering access to the content as well.
Looks like the new iPod red nanos are quite the hot seller in most of the Apple online stores around the world. Easily number 1 in Canada, UK and France.
Should help boost sales big time over the holidays.
Yup the ole graveyard is sure getting crowded there. lol! In my view Microsoft should spend more time focusing on ways to improve on their shitty operating system software versus ventures like Zune which are sure to stall or crash.
There are enough players on the market as it is with Creative being the definite competitor to Apple in the digital player market and honestly my second choice if I was looking to acquire another unit.
It's kinda funny though watching Microsoft make a horse race out of this with its big ego like they did with xBox trying to take a slice of Sony's dominance with Playstation. Never known as a software company interested in creative or fun initiatives, now they're about 10 years late playing catch-up on many fronts, but definitely 5 years too late in the MP3 business.
Absolutely true. iTMS is essentially a loss leader for Apple, hardly something they're making a killing on by a long shot and so yes, as long as the concept gets people to buy iPod's I don't think Apple really gives a shit where people get their music, despite their proclamations inside the packaging of don't steal music. lol!
Tex you're probably referring to the previous version of U2 iPod. This version only includes a coupon to download a 35 minute music video/interviews with the band. Hardly compensation of the sort you'd get with the entire U2 catalog.
Given Bono's dedication to charitable causes in Africa and such you'd think he'd push for Apple to donate portions of the sale of that unit to charity in light of the Product Red endorsement.
Just a thought.
I'm curious as to how Apple's U2 iPod sales are doing in light of recent models introduced and particularly the new red nano which the company intends to donate $10 of each sale to charity.
As Bono has in fact endorsed this product perhaps the affiliation between the band and Apple could help spur the U2 30GB model by donating a larger portion of the proceeds, say $20-$25 to charity for each sale made.
It's still priced at $329 which is $30 more than the regular model, so really Apple could probably increase interest in the product unless they intend to discontinue the line fairly soon.
I don't really see the appeal of this software honestly and tend to think those that prefer not to use iTunes are doing so more out of principle than common sense.
Let's face it, iTunes is much simpler to use than any of that Windows-based software and the only justification I could see for not using it would be if iTunes had serious compatibility issues with Windows itself. Have heard of some glitches but nothing catastrophic.
However I will acknowledge that the ability of Anapod to copy music from the iPod back to the PC is a handy feature. Certainly useful in the event your HD crashes, but then again if you haven't backed up your data it's really a risk you take at your own peril.
That's pretty hilarious.
Sounds like a brainwashed PC dork who has forgotten how Microsoft has also engaged in practices forcing people to use their crappy products when buying new computers to the exclusion of the competition. A case of the pot calling the kettle black but he sounds more like an individual who believes the Apple computers and software of today are the same as 10 years ago. And even those were better in many respects to the PC.
Coming from a PC'er and where MS and the manufacturers have forced people to put up with their crappy trial software downloads and forced used of IE I think his point is rather rich considering the source.
dileet...I've burned most of my existing CD's into iTunes using the 192 format myself, and although I do notice a difference with some tracks compared to 128, others not so much.
As for jazz and such I've found that changing the volume settings internally for the tracks and adjusting a preset equalizer makes a difference in playback quality. Even for the 128 encoded music I have.
It would be nice however if iTunes offered downloads at the 192 kbs rate.
Just out of curiousity what rate do you prefer otherwise? 192 or 320 kbs?
lol! Never thought of it that way. At least a better organized collection of files I should say.
Made the big leap yesterday and sold off my PC. Transferred all my files to my iMac and Mac Mini so I guess that now makes me a true Applephile now. :) Wasn't even using the machine that much to begin with.
these beasts though are still worth the money and the extra eye burn. I'll probably set mine a little further back and so far in doing it helps with less than half the brightness setting.
At first though compared to my 20 inch cinema display this is definitely a higher level of brightness than I expected. I thought it was more the issue with the 24' inch 'beast' you refer to.
Apple wasn't kidding when they said these new iMac's are substantially brighter than anything previous. You almost need sunglasses to view these monitors, even the 17 inch model. lol!
Turns out the logic board wasn't the problem with my Mac Mini unit. They replaced it and found out that it still didn't boot and so basically it's the hard drive. I kinda figured from the beginning, but troubleshooting is essentially a trial and error process.
Should be back up and running sometime next week.
iTunes update...version 7.01 For those who mentioned earlier certain bugs in the new iTunes release a couple weeks ago, namely issues surrounding the gapless playback etc. it looks like Apple has introduced a new version of iTunes that addresses this issue. Was available for download tonight.
I think those blogs are a bunch of crap. You can tell the people posting over there are either huge MS fans or they work for the company. I think someone over there made the comment to the effect they felt it was orchestrated and it probably is.
Sad.
HMS...there are 4 Apple Stores around the Seattle area, but in Canada, only 3 Apple Stores in total, all in Toronto.
Kinda funny really because the popularity of their products out here is quite strong. One only has to walk into any Reseller here to see that they're busy nearly all the time. Perhaps it's something being considered down the road or just perhaps these other retail outlets meet the demand and an Apple Store in this market may not do as well or serve much purpose other than to put these smaller guys out of business.
I believe U2 and Green Day performed before the game started.
We don't have an Apple Store here in Vancouver, BC but there are a number of authorized dealers here that provide service support and are pretty good from what I've heard and experienced today.
Still, you make a good point about the quality of customer service, but preferable these things didn't occur in the first place.
Well basically I'm told that the logic board should be replaced by the end of this week as the part was just put on order today. The good thing though is that perhaps I won't lose hard drive data, primarily music files that I have backed up anyways. The mini is well within it's warranty and I may just take out the AppleCare Extended Protection plan in light of this development, however I do agree that service is prompt and efficient compared to many other manufacturers that dick their customers around.
It's just rather inconvenient and a little surprising that this happened so soon, but I do realize stuff happens to ANY electronic device so looking forward to getting it back hopefully by Friday. :)
Just got the diagnostics in on the Mac Mini failure. Looks like the logic board is going to need to be replaced. LOL! Only 8 weeks old and already a major hardware failure. I wonder if these new Intel boards are really such a great thing after all?!? Not the first time I've heard this happen, but with a Mac Mini even the service techs admit this is a first.
Mac Mini failure....
Well I bought a new Mini only a couple months ago and today, on startup, the damn thing wouldn't boot. Phoned tech support, went through all the motions to try and get it to work. No dice. Had to take it into a Mac store for warranty repair ALREADY and by the looks of things it might very well be a massive hardware failure. Probably the hard drive although I'm keeping my fingers crossed.
I have to say I'm a little disappointed. I've used many PC's and such over the years, and this was my first Mac in over a decade and in just under 8 weeks this happens!
Won't know for sure until next week what the story is. If the hardware is fucked then I guess I can look forward to a new 1.83 GHZ model which is equivalent to my 1.66 Superdrive unit, but that is hardly the point under these circumstances.
ARGH!!!
Don't have any of these problems since using iTunes 7 last week. Either on my PC or the Mac.
As I said in an earlier post, Zune is not likely going to pose much threat to Apple and iPod.
When you think about it, MSFT is a little late to the party on this front and what they're offering is much uglier and full of features that really have no applicability at present. Especially the WIFI sharing they brag about which would only be useful if others in the room also used a Zune player, and even then, it's not like you can have the music for free beyond a couple listenings before you're probably forced to buy it anyways.
Then, and more importantly, those with WMA music libraries already from the likes of Napster and others aren't guaranteed compatibility on this player so unless Apple loses sight of the ball with their own product, I could see the Zune going the way of Dell's MP3 line that was discontinued earlier this year.
Was doing a cursory glance of some of the leading online retail stores that sell electronics up here in Canada and noticed that for the most part, the new 80GB iPod model is completely sold out on pre-orders. It won't actually be available in stores here until September 27th, but good luck trying to get one at this rate.
Luckily I ordered mine directly from the online Apple Store. Should be receiving it tomorrow or Tuesday at the latest.
I'm not really all that concerned about Zune and what kind of threat it potentially represents to iPod. We've already seen this potential threat in the Creative's new Zen players. What is curious to me is that those with existing WMA PlayforSure files won't be able to use them on this new Zune player so if you bought lots of music from the likes of Napster and other download services, will any of that be compatible with this player?
By the sounds of it, Zune will offer up the same format as iPod in that you'll have to buy content specifically from a dedicated store like iTMS so really what's the threat? I doubt people are gonna migrate en masse from iPod to Zune or find Zune more attractive in the case of first-time buyers. The only really appealing thing is the larger screen which might convince people to go that direction, but beyond that the inherent flaws in anything Microsoft introduces would be a major reason I wouldn't touch the thing with a ten foot pole. I'd rather go Creative Zen anyday if I made the switch.
To that end, you're right. You start allowing the swapping of files between this players via wireless and you're probably gonna have many of these units crashing out from viruses and the like.
Tex...you're right on. I don't think Apple is deliberately doing this but more needs to be done to bring content in line with the U.S. store. But like I said earlier, 2007 looks to be the year for that to change. Hopefully.
Otherwise, I'd use my credit card to buy U.S. content on the U.S. store. I wonder if you can do that with an iTunes card by itself?! Or do those cards also distinguish between countries?
I understand that movie downloads and such will become available worldwide in 2007. When exactly I'm not too sure, but I suspect probably early in the year with iTV's release.
Being in Canada it's a bitch not being able to download even TV show content. Not too sure why they can't offer this much but surely Jobs needs to do something about this considering how much he brags about iTMS being the #1 music store in all countries outside of the U.S.
I'll take a pass on that offer. lol! Don't think many up here would relish that idea the way they once did maybe 20 years ago.
The Apple Store and even the new iTunes downloads were all slow this morning on the announcement of these products. Kinda surprised I was able to order with relative ease, but then again I was using the Canadian site.
What disappoints me for now is that the movies are only available on the U.S. store. Hopefully this will change very quickly.
Yeah, it's a nice interface isn't it? Definitely an improvement.
Who needs a voice recorder or FM radio. I listen to these things for my own music, not crappy radio stations. Now, if they incorporated satellite radio capabilities then we'd have something to talk about.
And I really don't see much of a big deal behind the idea of virtual clickwheel iPods. No real demand for those kinds of products beyond the perculiar preferences of a few who'd like to see that.
Otherwise your Sansa player is just a POS. lol!
I'm not surprised. iPod Hi-Fi never really appealed to me personally, and considering people have so many other options in which to connect their iPod to their home audio systems, I wouldn't be surprised to see that one die a slow death.
When is the box for the TV set to come out. Don't see it on the Apple Store?
Placed an order for one of those iPod 80GB players a few minutes ago. Should get it within a week. I do like the feature upgrades, particularly the crossfade playback which was part of iTunes for some time.
Additionally, the storage space is impressive.
Got a small position here this morning. Thanks for the tip lowman. We'll see where it goes in the days/weeks to come.
One thing is for certain. If Jobs intends to introduce new wider screen iPods he's gonna have to do something about battery life. This is the one downside the unit at present and for anyone to watch a full length movie on the thing, he's gonna have to get at least a solid 5 hours out of the battery imo.
Should be interesting either way given the fact that it's only been a year since the last iPod rollout.
The wireless stream for movies to the TV sounds much more appealing in my view.
Waiting with anticipation.

I take it you stand by this disclaimer on the bottom of your posts, and if so your comments to that effect are just such. And you know what they say about opinions, just like armpits. Everyone has one and they all stink.
