Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick is making it clear: Texas’ unregulated THC market is coming to an end. Standing alongside law enforcement officials and families devastated by the effects of synthetic cannabis products, Patrick pledged to shut down every THC retailer in the state—no matter how long it takes......

Patrick’s remarks come as he leads a push for Senate Bill 3, authored by State Sen. Charles Perry (R–Lubbock), which would shut down all THC-infused product sales, close existing smoke shops, and prevent new ones from opening. He described the explosion of over 8,000 THC retailers across Texas in just the last few years as nothing short of a backdoor marijuana legalization effort, fueled by loopholes in state and federal law.

The Senate passed the bill in a 24-7 vote Wednesday afternoon.

Steve Dye, representing the Texas Police Chiefs Association, revealed that undercover police investigations found THC products with potency levels up to 78 percent, far beyond the strength of traditional marijuana.....

District Attorney Greg Willis of Collin County warned that regular THC use can permanently alter brain chemistry and has been linked to a fivefold increase in psychosis cases......

Sheriff Bill Waybourn of Tarrant County echoed those concerns, stating that 70 percent of his jail’s population is now suffering from mental health issues, with THC playing a major role.

“I talked to the mental health workers over there, and there’s no question that this marijuana is at the tip of the spear causing these issues,” said Waybourn.......

“Joshua bought a product called Wedding Cake Delta 8, which caused him to fall into a psychotic break. The voices in his head told him to go to LA to save God’s children. He was suffering. He didn’t understand what was happening to his brain, and he stepped in front of a train in Pecos, Texas. He was 22 years old.”.......

“This is a poison in our public and we, as the legislature, our number one responsibility is life and death issues,” said Patrick.

Additionally, Patrick released a video Wednesday morning of his visits to smoke shops that sell THC, underscoring their proximity to schools.

Moldova’s economy is showing signs of recovery, while unprecedented challenges due to the spillover effects of Russia's invasion of Ukraine are still unfolding. A moderate economic recovery in the first half of 2024 improved household incomes and investments. Nevertheless, there are significant macroeconomic risks, including the potential intensification of the war in Ukraine, additional energy disruptions, particularly the potential discontinuation of gas transit through Ukraine, and headwinds from the upcoming elections in 2024 and 2025. Moldova's medium-term prospects hinge on structural reforms and progress toward EU accession.

Despite sustained economic growth over two decades, poverty remains pervasive, particularly in rural regions where access to services and viable economic opportunities is limited. Traditional means of poverty alleviation, such as remittances and social assistance, are slowing, while low labor force participation and employment rates impede a shift to employment-based poverty reduction, underscoring the urgency for structural reforms. Nearly a quarter of young people aged 15-34 were neither employed nor in education and training (NEET). Moldova faces structural challenges including low productivity growth, governance deficiencies, a large state footprint, limited competition, an imbalanced business environment, and tax distortions.

The country remains vulnerable to adverse weather events and energy shocks due to its heavy dependence on energy imports and limited diversification in energy sources. Climate change worsens these vulnerabilities, increasing the frequency and severity of droughts and other natural hazards, thereby posing substantial risks to Moldova's agricultural sector and livelihoods. With EU candidate status, strong reform momentum and growth-enhancing, climate-resilient investments are needed to foster long-term, sustainable development and convergence toward EU income levels.

Moldova’s parliament on Friday voted to approve a 60-day state of emergency, citing fears of an immediate threat to the security of its citizens ahead of an expected halt in Russian gas flows.

Russian gas currently reaches Moldova, a landlocked country in the northeastern corner of Europe’s Balkan region, via its neighbor of Ukraine.

However, a gas transit deal between Russia’s Gazprom and Ukraine’s Naftogaz is set to expire on Dec. 31 and Kyiv has repeatedly said it has no intention to extend the contract.

A total of 56 lawmakers of Moldova’s 101-seat parliament voted in favor of a nationwide state of emergency, which the government said would allow the country to apply a series of measures to prevent and mitigate the threat of insufficient energy resources.

The cessation of Russian gas to Moldova’s Transnistrian region could generate “a humanitarian crisis” as well as “risks to the functioning and stability” of the country’s energy sector, according to a press release from Moldova’s parliament.

Moldova Prime Minister Dorin Recean said this winter must be the last in the country’s history that it can be held hostage over energy supplies.

Russia, which launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine nearly three years ago, has previously said it stands ready to continue to supply gas to Europe via Ukraine.

Russia launched a massive aerial strike against Ukraine’s energy infrastructure on Friday morning. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Moscow used 93 missiles and nearly 200 drones in the attack.
