That was only one of the criteria. You don't have to meet them all, just a bunch ofthem.
If you are old enough to qualify for AARP, you qualify here, albeit maybe as a junior Old Timer. <g>

Interesting.
Different sites have it different ways. I thought I was right in remembering it as Dick Nixon. And that's what this site had.
http://www.extremetech.com/print_article/0,3998,a=25313,00.asp
Also this MIT site:
http://web.mit.edu/afs/athena.mit.edu/activity/v/voodoo/www/is755/nixon.html
Also, interestingly, this site from The Nixon Era Center at Mountain State University. Why aren't they as apt to be right as the Nixon library?
http://www.nixonera.com/welcome.asp
But the History Channel has it as just Nixon.
http://www.historychannel.com/cgi-bin/frameit.cgi?p=http%3A//www.historychannel.com/speeches/archive...
And they have it on a sound clip, apparently, which I don't have time to check out tonight.
My memory was that he did say Dick Nixon. Other people obviously have that memory, too. But if anybody has time to listen to the clip, and it really is a recording of the speech, that will be definitive.
What I wonder is whether he wrote it one way and delivered it another.
Oh well.

I've wondered for a long time why
cursing so often contains derrogatory elements about women or sex. Anyone have a theory on that?
Yep.
Men are just plain more talented cursers than women are.
I'm surprised that NOW hasn't demanded classes in school and college to bring women up to the male level in cursing. They've demanded it in everything else.

I bet not more than three other people on IH, if that, have seen a genuine, real, multi-body college campus streak.

I suggest you consider asking Matt to feature the election on the home page for a few days. As GP-B, it's your call, just a thought. But might generate a wee bit more excitement.

Certainly they can survive the default -- they have plenty of cash and backlog. Their earnings will suffer, that's "all."
I don't know enough about the LSP-Pike Energy LLC to know whether in the long run they well benefit from owning the whole thing. Certainly in the short term, they will take an earnings hit. But if they pay $43 million and an unspecified amount of forgiven debt to own the whole project, what does this mean for the company? Assuming the deal goes through?
I have to assume that SGR thinks this is a good long-term deal. They have, presumably, the ability to force XEL into bankruptcy if they want to. I would hope they would use that leverage to get a good deal for the purchase.
But this is all total speculation. I have no idea whatsoever. Hadn't even seen the story -- thanks for bringing it to my attention -- since I was in court all day (successfully, I might add.)
Edit: Note that they have nearly $500 million cash -- they should be able to afford $43 million.

I think WorldCom is more likely to come out of bankruptcy and turn around its stock price with a nice return in five years than AOL/TW is likely to give a high return on its stock price. But IMO, either one is a gamble, and I don't gamble in the market, so I really am just blowing smoke here.

I copied this from elsewhere, don't vouch for its accuracy, but it sounds about right.
How old is Grandma?
--------------------
One evening a grandson was talking to his grandmother about current events. The
grandson asked his grandmother what she thought about the shootings at
schools, the computer age, and just things in general.
The Grandma replied, "Well, let me think a minute, I was born, before television,
penicillin, polio shots, frozen foods, Xerox, contact lenses, Frisbees and the pill.
There was no radar, credit cards, laser beams or ball-point pens.
Man had not invented pantyhose, air conditioners, dishwashers, clothes dryers,
and the clothes were hung out to dry in the fresh air and man hadn't yet walked on
the moon.
Your Grandfather and I got married first-and then lived together. Every family had a
father and a mother. Until I was 25, I called every man older than I, 'Sir'- and after I
turned 25, I still called policemen and every man with a title, "Sir.' We were before
gay-rights, computer-dating, dual careers, daycare centers, and group therapy.
Our lives were governed by the Ten Commandments, good judgment, and
common sense.
We were taught to know the difference between right and wrong and to stand up
and take responsibility for our actions Serving your country was a privilege; living in
this country was a bigger privilege. We thought fast food was what people ate
during Lent.
Having a meaningful relationship meant getting along with your cousins. Draft
dodgers were people who closed their front doors when the evening breeze
started. Time-sharing meant time the family spent together in the evenings and
weekends - not purchasing condominiums.
We never heard of FM radios, tape decks, CDs, electric typewriters, yogurt, or
guys wearing earrings. We listened to the Big Bands, Jack Benny, and the
President's speeches on our radios. And I don't ever remember any kid blowing
his brains out listening to Tommy Dorsey.
If you saw anything with 'Made in Japan' on it, it was junk. The term 'making out'
referred to how you did on your school exam.
Pizza Hut, McDonald's, and instant coffee were unheard of. We had 5 & 10-cent
stores where you could actually buy things for 5 and 10 cents. Ice-cream cones,
phone calls, rides on a streetcar, and a Pepsi were all a nickel. And if you didn't
want to splurge, you could spend your nickel on enough stamps to mail 1 letter
and 2 postcards.
You could buy a new Chevy Coupe for $600 but who could afford one? Too bad,
because gas was 11 cents a gallon.
In my day, "grass" was mowed, "coke" was a cold drink, "pot" was something your
mother cooked in, and "rock music" was your grandmother's lullaby. "Aids" were
helpers in the Principal's office, "chip" meant a piece of wood, "hardware" was
found in a hardware store, and "software" wasn't even a word.
And we were the last generation to actually believe that a lady needed a husband
to have a baby. No wonder people call us "old and confused" and say there is a
generation gap.....
and how old do you think I am ???.....
Read on to see -- pretty scary if you think about it and pretty sad at the same time.

AEP -- extraordinary sales growth the past few years, but no earnings growth at all. Something weird with their accounting? Change in their business model? Don't know, but after Enron, one had better ask!!
The dividend is great, but not much growth potential in the stock price -- high price has been stuck right around 50 for five years, and no reason to think it will change.
Based on a cursory look, I would view this more as a bond than as a stock. Would want to look carefully at the cash flow to see whether it can sustain the dividend, which has been $2.40 for at least five years, and again no reason I can see on a cursory look to think it will go up, unless you know things I haven't seen on a very preliminary look.
GGP -- looks more interesting. Solid sales AND earnings growth the past five years, but stock price that hasn't gone through the roof. Dividend has increased every year for at least the past five. Yielding around 6% at recent price. May bear some looking into, though debt is pretty high even for an REIT, and could be hurt if interest rates rise.

Safeway, SWY, has gotten creamed. Had some bad results. Concerns about competiton from discounters, exp. Walmart.
Still, if I project zero earnings growth for the next two years (historical growth hs been running around 10%) so I assume earnings in two years of $2.70, and I project the high PE at some point in the year rising all the way up to 15 (historically, the average high PE has been 29, and the low PE has never gone below 13.5), then at some point during that year I get a 40 price. Which in two years is a nice run up from 27. And that's making some pretty severe assumptions -- if anything goes better than that, I'll do better.
Meanwhile, the company is running a nice positive cash flow.
People are always going to need groceries.
It's not exciting, but except for the fact that making money, especially in this market, IS pretty exciting.
