Ummm…
By any chance did you, within the past few hours, receive a visit from a couple gentlemen wearing shades and dressed in dark suits with bulges in the jackets where there shouldn’t be bulges?

The `fridge doesn’t scare me.
If I can’t remove a hinge to get the door off;
I have an angle grinder to cut the lock, or chain, or, if desperate enough, the handle.

Hang out on the computer.
Watch NASCAR…(Hopefully without falling asleep.)
Japanese restaurant for supper.
Yesterday Soldier Son, as he often does, went to a Farmer’s Market and loaded up on Pirogues, Cabbage Rolls and Kielbasa.
Usually he cooks it at our place and comes over to assist in cleaning up the left-overs. This time he cooked it at his home so he could keep the left-overs.
We were invited for supper with him and his girlfriend.
Now, he lives really close by, and we, having a key to his place, threatened to go over there and clean out his `fridge when he is at work.
He threatened to lock a chain through the `fridge door handles.

P.S.
My 50% Ukrainian heritage sez that the correct, as translated to English spelling, is Perogies and Kobasa (Ku-Ba-Saw). (Cabbage rolls is OK)
Thank You!

Yes, honor killings are perpetrated by Sikhs.
I thought it was more of a tribal thing, but any wacko could perform one.
Not exactly true according to Wikipedia. (FWIW)
Cultural implications can often be seen in public and private views of honor killings. In some cultures, honor killings are considered less serious than other murders simply because they arise from long-standing cultural traditions and are thus deemed appropriate or justifiable. Additionally, according to a poll done by the BBC’s Asian network, 1 in 10 of the 500 Hindus, Sikhs, Christians and Muslim surveyed said they would condone any murder of someone who threatened their family’s honor. The poll demonstrated how the notion of honor killings and views of whether they are acceptable and justifiable crosses religion and is more contingent on the family’s social culture.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Honor_killing
What puzzles me is whose honor was he trying to protect? His or his family’s? Perhaps he was just another wacko after all.

Now that is a great story!
Playground Justice.
It doesn't get any better than that.

`Mornin` backatcha LH,
For those curious, the ‘victim’s’ strategy is to keep moving around until one opponent is behind the other. It then becomes a one on one. At that point, while still circling, he attacked the first opponent, drove him off, then attacked the second keeping the first one behind the second.
Repeat.

I wonder if Nik reported to Customs and Immigration upon entering Canada? <gg>

I don’t know if this has been posted here before…
If one has no use for the “Social Media Icons” at the top of the page, and find them annoying:
Settings, Site Options, Suppress social media icons (second from bottom) Set this to True
Done.

Our Kids participated in a yearly city (non-contact type) Karate tournament and won some medals.
Soldier Son was in a two on one competition. When he was the ‘victim’ he blocked all the others’ attacks and became the aggressor. He owned them. Good enuff for the gold medal.

I keep sayin` that this site needs a ‘Recommend this Post’ or ‘Like’ or ‘Dislike’ button.
I would have pushed the affirmative one.

Our eldest Son was bullied in Grade 7 also.
The next year he transferred to an advanced school where he should have been anyways. (Stupid School System!)
My wife enrolled him (and eventually our other two sons) in Karate. There they were taught to back away from a conflict, how to protect themselves, or go on the offensive if all else failed. All three earned their Black Belts and became Instructors.
Our middle Son (Soldier Son), like your Soldier Son, has been trained (in the Military) how to silently, efficiently and quickly kill with his bare hands. I saw a demo of the tactics. No way I’m about to mess with any of them!
Q: From behind, you grab an enemy’s helmet and quickly pull it back to break his neck.
Problem: The enemy does not have his chinstrap fastened and the helmet harmlessly comes off in your hands.
What do you do?
A: Beat him over the head with the helmet.

Way to go! Well Done!
I bet there are a lot of stories like ours.
Id
Grade nine, first year of High School in a rural village.
There was a bully, older, bigger, and stronger whose primary attack was a sucker punch from out of nowhere.
It was during Easter Exams and I was sleep deprived from all the cramming. (One has to study sometime eh?) Lunch time; most of the boys were in the schoolyard, the girls inside. It was the wrong time for his patented move as I was in less than a congenial mood.
I took him on, eventually got him on his back on the floor, and was about to rearrange his ugly puss when a Teacher elbowed her way through the surrounding crowd of girls and hauled us off to the Principal’s Office. The Principal did not lecture me; he only reminded me that fighting was not allowed and issued me a week’s detention.
I am positive my Parents found out about it but not a word was said by them or anyone else.
The end of the story is that the bully’s behavior changed that day as he never picked on me or my friends again. I don’t know if it was the humiliation or what the Principal said to him or both.
Id
Hot Button… You pushed it!
Neely said her son is not a problem child and that this was the first she'd heard of teachers having any issues with him.
"He's not a bully," she said.
No, her precious little spawn would absolutely, positively Never Ever do anything like That! <ng>
I wonder how her little sweetheart learned this behavior?
Obviously Amy Neely’s abode does not possess any mirrors.
Good on the Teachers!

Here is a solution, but probably not the correct answer.
8 + 3 – 4 = 0
8 – 3 – 4 ? 0
Id
Edit: The ? symbol is supposed to be rhe "not equals" symbol.
It shows up in preview, but not in the post.
Prolly wrong anyhoo.
Yahoo! What prize did I win?
There is no "4" in the puzzle.
I was wondering if it was the enclosed space, or if the "enclosure" had to be a "round" shape to = 1
If only enclosed, not roundish, 4 could also depend on the font.
Id
2?
If I am correct.
Id
P.S.
Minor Hint:
One of those "equations" got me started.
Birth Certificates:
As the campaigns roll along, someone (GOP? Tea Party?) should set up a web page with Romney’s and Obama’s birth certificates.
Near the top would be thumbnails of Romney’s, an equals sign ( = ), then Obama’s.
Next would be the full sized “Photoshopped” version of Romney’s. No, not just photoshopped, but photoshopped to make it more than obvious that it had been tampered with. Mismatched and colored fonts and backgrounds etc.
Next, details:
Place of birth: Kenya, or Hawaii, or…
Mother: Mother Mary, or Sister Theresa, or Martha Washington, or Mary Lincoln, or…
Father: Immaculate Conception, or Abraham Lincoln, or George Washington, or…
Other “details” such as dates etc. would be screwed with.
Next would be Obama’s photoshopped one as posted at the White House.
Following would be some commentary as to the validity of both as these are equal fiction.
Finally, a link to Sheriff Joe’s report.
Just throwing it out there.
Id
Obama’s economy must be worse than I thought…
I have a link to an online TV Listings Guide. It lists, in three hour increments, what is on the tube for our specific cable service. Updating is simple… Just hit F5 on the keyboard. Specific, within reason, times and dates also can be selected. Shows can be clicked to expand that specific listing or one can right click to bring up much more info. There is a small price to pay as there are advertisements at the page top, sprinkled throughout, and on the expansion of the shows.
Life now must not be so convenient for the 1%.
For the past several days ALL the ads are for OWN…
The Oprah Winfrey Network.
Id
P.S.
I’ve never seen an OWN ad there before.
Yup! Take out the hyphen and whatever precedes it.
Calling oneself a hyphenated American or Canadian or member of any other country just includes one in a minority; not a member of a much greater majority.
Then again, perhaps the hyphen users feel that limitation relatively makes them a bigger fish in a smaller pond.
How does one spell Insecurity?

I agree. They could use a bit of color to ease navigation.
NO, not the retina burning colors as they originally were.
How about firebrick, or dark red, or crimson;
and dark olive green, or dark green, or forest green?

Found it… Sorta.
Good question, my year old ASUS laptop has no where near the volume my previous HP's had.
http://blog.tjitjing.com/index.php/2009/01/low-volume-on-my-realtek-acer-laptop.html
The solution:
- Have song playing so you can here the difference.
- Right click on the speaker icon in the task bar and select Playback Devices (or find it in the Windows Control Panel) The Sound dialog box opens up.
- From the Playback tab select the Playback device being used, in my case Speakers Realtek High Definition Audio (marked with a green checkbox) and click the Properties button. A new dialog box – Speaker Properties – opens up.
- On the Enhancements tab make sure Disable All Sound Effects and Immediate Mode are both unchecked. Check Loudness Equalization (on my setup all other unchecked) and hit Apply.
- Bingo! Sound volume is up a lot, maybe 50%!
My ACER (Win 7 + Realtek) had:
Disable All Sound Effects unchecked.
Immediate Mode checked.
Loudness Equalization checked.
All others unchecked.
While listening to “Moondance” only; Volume Cranked, I:
Unchecked Immediate Mode and hit Apply. No Change.
Checked Disable All Sound Effects and hit Apply. No Change.
Unchecked Disable All Sound Effects and hit Apply. No Change.
Sooo… I unchecked Loudness Equalization and hit Apply.
Bingo! We have a winner!
I experimented with different volume levels using a set of headphones with very good bass response. To my surprise, the effect, to me, between Loudness being checked or not, was minimal. Others will probably have a different experience.
Please try it and report back.
Id
P.S.
Loudness Equalization is kinda like a bass boost at low volume levels. Problem is that this works kinda backwards. I can provide much more detail if someone wishes.
Ummm... Would a sincere Sorry be appropriate?
Id
Correction:
On my ACER it is Fn + > for Brighter and Fn + < for Dimmer.
Fn + Up arrow is Louder and Fn + Down arrow is Quieter.
In my defense… I don’t use them any more.
Id
Congrats!!!
Well Done!
Id
Yes, SmartAudio is the sound interface controller.
That is where to look for ear protection or limiter or whatever it is called, IF it has it.
Try a set of headphones (just for the heck of it) if you've got them.
I’ve searched but cannot find your exact problem listed.
Quite a few strange ones, but not yours so I won’t go there yet. Others will be along shortly to help.
I’ll keep head scratchin’ and searching even though I’m not familiar with Toshibas.
Id
According to us.toshiba.com the software might be “TOSHIBA Media Controller”.
Search for that. If not found, search for “Media Controller” or just media or sound.
On my Acer a search for “Media Controller” was futile.
I got the Conexant from Toshiba.ca
Id
Try searching for Conexant.
That may be the hardware or software a Satellite uses.
Otherwise, let us know the model # of the computer.
Id
Same OS as mine…
Realtek:
Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Realtek HD Audio Manager
You may not have the Realtek audio in your system??? But with all the PC crap invading our lives, you probably have the “Ear Protection” function (limiter). Perhaps also, that only works on headphones.
Edit: On mine it affects the speakers also! I feel a Rant coming on!
On my ACER it is Fn + > for louder and Fn + < for quieter.
That works the same as the mouse in Mixer or Volume control. The USB keyboard has separate keys so no Fn + .
Id
My ACER laptop also is not as loud as I wish. It is supposed to have 1 Watt per channel. No way is that being delivered by the tiny, tinny speakers, so I use headphones… no external speakers.
Here’s what I found to “improve” the level:
Some applications (my version of Windows Media Player for example) may have a volume control that is independent of the ’puter’s Sound System. I ended up maxing that out and control the system volume via the “sound” keys on my USB keyboard. (Same functions as the laptop’s volume control keys.)
Check everywhere for other volume controls. For example my Realtek HD Audio Manager has a “button” for “Ear Protection”. Make sure it is off.
Well, that’s a start.
Larry, what is your setup?
Id
P.S.
Different headphones (and raw speakers) have different efficiencies; thus different levels. That *should* not be a concern with amplified external speakers with their own volume control.
What? Me screwing with the system that is screwing with me?
Nevah!

`Ya know, I was thinkin’: “What would I do in the teacher`s situation?”
(Yeah, I know what you are thinking… But Yes, occasionally I DO have a few synapses that fire.)
My solution first would be to mark the assignments and exams by my standards. I would then pick a random number from 1 to 10, add it to all the grades, and submit those grades to the office.
Problem solved. No zeroes!
And when called on the carpet for a mark over 100%?
“Athletes sometimes “perform” at 110%! … Why not students?”

The zero grades were for assignments not handed in, or exams not written.
