I agree that you always have to put a heavy filter on pumping and overly optimistic projections.
I would have expected as hard as the market is getting hit for at least some investors to be migrating into gold ETFs.
And for the general public to start buying gold - I still expect this to happen.
Why is GLD down today?
Hey davidal66, I agree, it's nice to see the hold lifted.
It's a few years too late for my investment in COR to benefit, but hopefully it's a huge step toward determining if there's viable therapeutic value in ampakines.
Patriots please for week 2.
Houston please - thanks!
Thanks to all for your comments, I genuinely appreciate them.
I didn't take any action to resign as board moderator, but I have not been checking in too often and thus it appears that iHub boots moderators after a certain period of inactivity.
I'm fine with it and I'm glad to see gfp grabbed the reins.
As moderator I felt a responsibility to maintain a board that was welcoming to differing points of view, and even moreso, was civil.
I look forward to continuing to follow Cortex and this board - I am still around and always reachable by email.
Eagles this week please.
Atlanta this week please.
Giants this week please.
Dallas this week please.
Packers this week please.
Saints please.
Tampa Bay please
San Diego please
Pittsburgh for week 2 please.
Switching my pick to Houston please - thanks!
Arizona please - thanks for another year of the King/Queen of the Hill Pool!
Strangely, you see that kind of odd juxtaposition on the CORX board a lot gfp.
gfp, scstocks, ombow - thanks for moving the OT stock discussion to the other general board, a little here is fine and now anyone interested can follow it over there.
I certainly could use a winner after CORX.
drfreely:
Out of curiosity I looked up the definition of several:
Being of a number more than two or three but not many
I would assume the word was used correctly in this case, but of course without actual audited numbers we have no way of knowing.
Major enough for their auditing firm to resign - well crap, figures I'm holding some NIV.
Gfp - while I question whether Cortex could raise the $20M in your example with a RS, I do think the most likely course of action we will see is the third in your list. This is based on Cortex's historical precedent, and the mostly gut level feeling I have that no one out there will pay a significant premium for Cortex over its current valuation.
Both of those stmts, and pretty much all stmts by Identa for that matter, are forward looking, and thus IMO not legally actionable when they don't occur.
sparky - it seems as if you are assuming Cortex mgmt is not doing what you suggest, i.e. turning over every stone, looking for grants, trying to be creative.
I don't know if they are or not, but I assume they are because it's their job - do you have info that they are not doing these things? I'd genuinely be interested if you do.
I also fully expect that most other small cash strapped bios are doing those exact same things in their respective searches for funding and thus the competition Cortex is up against for funding is extremely fierce.
The investment funds available now are a small percentage of what they were a few years ago - so only the very best risk/reward opportunity companies are going to get that funding - a very select few, no matter how promising some of the funding losers may be.
Thanks scstocks - .40 looks like a bit of a scary entry point for ORXE based on its history, but if it's headed up, it's headed up.
I'll do a little more reading on it.
The only other ones I'm poking around currently are two Chinese stocks NIVS - Ombow mentioned it out a couple of weeks ago, and FEED.
Your condo location sounds great. I've never been to a spring training game - some day I'd love to check out the more relaxed environment plus enjoy some warm weather while winter is still in full force back home.
scstocks - which of surf's companies are you referring to - I'd like to check them out.
I'm envious of your trip to spring training!
haysaw - I'm extremely confident that the number of small bios in general or in the cns field specifically that have managed significant financing deals over the past 3 years is minuscule in comparison to the number of small bios that have gone bankrupt, been bought out, merged, etc... or are just scraping along and are hungry and desperate for a deal just like Cortex.
It seems like you have an index of past posts on this board or an ability to search them - perhaps you can find one of Neuro's old posts where he listed comparable CNS bios and compared their performance with Cortex - as I recall he's done that several times over the years.
That would provide a list of comparable companies.
Neuro - I can always count on you for logic and for reminding us accurately of Cortex's history details, which I always genuinely appreciate.
I think the situation, as rumored by davidal, is different this time than the past, i.e. the rumor that Cortex will now entertain offers and/or be out soliciting them. I believe previously Cortex would only have sold itself if an exceptionally good offer had been made. They may have got some lowball offers over the years, but as far as we small investors know, never a credible one that Cortex seriously considered.
Now, today, if potential buyers have heard from Cortex or via the grapevine that Cortex is seriously up for sale, I would have expected the pps and volume to have reflected it - human nature will always manifest itself, and friends etc... will always get word of a potential good investment.
This is different from somebody leaking info that partnership or licensing deal is in progress - this is just passing along info that a company is up for bids and will be sold and get in now before the price goes up. In fact we already have that "info" ourselves via a rumor on this board.
That we haven't seen price or volume indicates to me that Cortex is not any more for sale now than it has been in the past. If Cortex is for sale, the other logical possibility is that no one sees a premium opportunity in CORX even if it is for sale - I consider that much less likely than the 1st explanation.
For point 2, I completely agree - we don't know what has been offered or if anything has been offered for ADHD, but we do know that no deal has been struck and Cortex is truly running out of bullets to fire - and from that I'm assuming that no good offers have been made and maybe NO offers have been made - and I realize (from past bitter experience with Cortex) that the deals can and do take a long time to finalize.
I guess I'm speaking mostly from the gut tonight but it's based on long observation of Cortex... I don't think a buyout is likely, I expect another financing, and I expect it to be horrific to existing shareholders - it has to be looking at the current pps and number of shares. Again, purely a gut prediction.
Will a financing and some kind of deal be enough to see an ADHD trial through to completion?... we'll find out - probably 12 to 18 months from now.
I hope I'm mistaken about a financing and another long drawn out timeline, as I do think a buyout is finally necessary to get ampakines moving in the clinic - the hope for the science is what caught my attention in the first place. It's sad to look back and see what kind of progress might have already been made if ampakines had been developed, and even sadder to project how far into the future it will be until that happens given the current pace and historical precedent for their development to date.
Thanks Neuro.
Gfp - you may be right, but if no one is willing to partner ADHD or anything else for the pittance they could currently get it for, or ink a strategic partnership with Cortex for what they could currently get it for, then I logically don't believe there will be any particularly large offers to buy the company either.
Past history also doesn't suggest that mgmt will sell the company.
Your eBay analogy I agree with, it's the selling price I disagree on.
I don't think anyone except us and Cortex mgmt puts much value in Ampakines - 5 years ago maybe, in today's environment, I doubt it.
Another thought... if Cortex is truly on the market as davidal's rumor suggests, why have we not seen any volume or price appreciation?
Logically to me, either Cortex is not on the market, or there is no interest.
I still have 20k shares and hope I'm wrong.
I will load the boat IF I think a buyout is likely, and IF I can get some kind of feel that it will be for a large enough premium to the current pps to make the risk worth it - it would be nice to finally profit from the time and attention I've put into CORX, and I know many other small investors here are in that same situation as well.
haysaw: Listing just a couple such examples suggests to me that there are only a very few such examples to list.
Gfp - I personally don't think it's likely Cortex will be sold, at least not in the near term - my guess is that all the offers to buy the company are as lowball as the licensing offers.
What I expect to happen is another financing, and perhaps yet another beyond the next one until the company is bought for a true pittance.
This is not necessarily (and not necessarily not either) a knock on mgmt - if no one is willing to pay much for the company, we'd probably all rather see Cortex soldier on as well and take its 1 in a 100 shot at some kind of miracle rather than be sold for, e.g. 5 cents a share.
Again, not a knock on mgmt per se, more a realistic (I think) guess that no one will be willing to pay much for Cortex - my logic based on the fact that no one is willing to partner with Cortex for a pittance either and everyone is willing to take the chance that a competitor could partner or scoop Cortex up at any time for a relatively low cost.
The world is NOT beating a path to Cortex's door, and it's not like there's any magic bullet that mgmt could implement to quickly change that.
I hope I'm wrong.
Congrats!... I hope you have profited well from your patience and diligence in following VIFL.
2 out of 3 ain't bad!
Well, sadly it is in this case. :(
Ombow - clearly you have a very strong opinion and nothing I say will cause you to reconsider the applicability of the rules iHub has in place.
They aren't my rules btw - if I ever decide to start a msg board community, I imagine I will try some different rules.
Regardless, I do always appreciate your discussion about Cortex and I very sincerely hope you continue to share it.
And even more sincerely, since I believe you are someone who wants to see Cortex succeed and profit from their success via investing in them, I hope someday we both get to enjoy seeing Cortex and its shareholders be rewarded.
Ombow - if you think someone is providing inaccurate facts about the company, feel free to state what you believe are the correct facts.
If someone claims they bought a bunch of shares or sold a bunch of shares, or works in a certain field, etc... those are all unverifiable claims made by an anonymous person and should be taken as such by everyone on any board.
Ombow - first off, I've always appreciated the questions you ask Cortex and the responses you share - I always get something out of even the innocuous responses, so thanks for sharing your communications with Cortex.
Secondly, I appreciate the stock ideas you share... I still wish I had done my research more quickly on NIVS.
Third, the United States is a democracy, but iHub is not. We are all here voluntarily and voluntarily agree to iHub's TOS by being here. This really is an important distinction between the two that you should give some thought to.
Lastly, if you still can't see why your quote below from your deleted post is both a TOS violation and not particularly helpful toward fostering a civil tone on the CORX board, I'm thinking you may be set enough in your ways that you ain't ever going to change.
Thanks, it sounds like buying ORA right now is a gamble as to whether they can get North Brawley to be profitable and/or how long it will take and cost.
