The Chinese-based, U.S. traded, Canadian Solar gave investors serious cause for close examination Wednesday.
Canadian Solar (nasdaq: CSIQ - news - people ) posted earnings of $5.5 million, or 20 cents per share, compared with a loss of $5.1 million, or 21 cents per share, a year earlier. Sales climbed to $127.5 million from $24.4 million.
Analysts expected earnings of 18 cents per share on $120.5 million in sales, on average, according to a Thomson Financial survey. Shares of the company were up 14.7%, or $2.82, to $21.81, in late-afternoon trading.
The Chinese company also said nearly all of its silicon needs and sales for 2008 have been secured through contracts and that it is "on track" to grow sales and profit margins during the first quarter, despite snow storms that caused delivery delays.
"The results are clearly very positive," said Colin Rusch, an analyst at Broadpoint Capital. "This is a company that almost went bankrupt a year ago, and now they know how to manage inventory, and manage equipment and material suppliers as well."
Looking at the broader picture, Rusch noted the importance of running efficient operations.
"This is a commodity industry and companies that are running lean, disciplined growth are operations that are going to succeed in the longer term," Rusch said, "and this company has been coming out as one of those companies."
The Chinese solar-product maker expects operating income of $12 million to $12.5 million this quarter on sales of $150 million to $155 million. Analysts had lower forecasts of $8.8 million in operating profit and $138.7 million in sales, on average, according to Thomson Financial.
"We are still on track for quarter over quarter revenue growth and margin improvement" despite the weather snags, Chief Executive Shawn Qu said. He added that the company is "quickly gaining the critical size and economy of scale to establish itself as a long-term player in the solar industry."
Canadian Solar Is Glowing
Qu expects "further improvements" in gross margins during 2008 as the company increases production capacity. Canadian Solar expects $650 million to $750 million in revenue this year, below the average analyst estimate of $711.1 million.
The company expects to ship products with 40 megawatts worth of annual generating capacity during the first quarter.
A one-megawatt plant running continuously at full capacity can power 778 households each year, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. Solar technology has lower capacity since its power generation is constrained by availability of the sun.
Canadian Solar expects to lift production capacity to 250 megawatts in 2008, up from 100 megawatts currently.

BofA cuts 4 Chinese solar companies - what was he smoking?
Feb 27 (Reuters) - Banc of America downgraded four Chinese

solf -Solarfun Secures Silicon Supplies
Solarfun Power Holdings (nyse: SOLF - news - people ) will receive $230 million worth of silicon wafers from a Korean conglomerate over a seven-year period starting this month. Solarfun did not give the name of its Korean partner.
The agreement also stipulates that the prices will be fixed, a key component to the contract as spot prices for polysilicon are much more expensive than fixed prices. As more capacity comes online to produce the costly solar and semiconductor component, analysts and the industry expect prices to ease.
Solarfun Chairman Lu Yonghua said that the contract will help the company meet its goal to manufacture products with 360 megawatts worth of generating capacity by mid-2008.
It also allows the company to "explore OEM as a possible addition to our business model," Yonghua said.
OEM, or original equipment manufacturing, is an agreement in which multiple companies partner to manufacture a product, but sell it under one brand.
