GM Al, I dont disagree that statistics can be inaccurate to some degree. That's why I used hospitalizations and not cases counts. But I will say anecdotally, that in previous variant waves, we knew very few people who came down with covid. This go round, we know many people who have tested positive - and have had (thankfully) mild symptoms.
In Maryland, hospitalization occupancy due to covid went from 600 to over 2000 in just a month. You cant fake that huge increase in such a short amount of time.
And the hospitals that are being overwhelmed in Maryland the most are in the areas with the lower vaccination rates. Coincidence ? I think not.
I'm dissapointed that the hard core Republican Party has become the party of "if I dont like what the numbers are saying, then I'll simply find a way to discredit the numbers".
But based on the 1200+ non-vaccinated daily deaths from covid, along with normal age related deaths, and climate change activist Gen-Zers become voting age eligible, the current incarnation of the Republican Party is going to increasingly find it tougher to win elections.
GM Al, I'm not disagreeing that the data collection relating to covid cases has been less than perfect, but if we're analyzing data ....
One thing I’ve learned is that a good analyst will let the data guide them to answers
If he's a good analyst then he should be looking at the percent of people in the ICUs how are unvaccinated vs. vaccinated. Current data suggests 60% of ICU patients are unvaccinated vs. 40% who are vaccinated. But......
There are waaaay more vaccinated people than unvaccinated so when you account for that, unvaccinated people are about 10 times more likely to be an ICU patient than vaccinated people are.
I'm a good analyst and I let the data guide me to the correct answer.
Hi bbotcs, yes I think the plan is to be able to walk (a longggg walk) or bike from the Georgetown waterfront to the newly developed SW Waterfront - going down the Potomac, past the MLK and FDR memorial area, and then finally to Maine Ave. We saw a number of people on rent-a-bikes. There's also a water taxi that hits the Georgetown waterfront, the SW waterfront, old town Alexandria, and the National Harbor waterfront. It might be fun just to hop on and hop off of it for a day.
As for the US being a police state/surveillance state - yeah its been that way for a while. On the plus side, anyone dumb enough to show their face while committing a crime will get caught.
hi bbotcs, I hope you had a nice Christmas weekend. my wife and I took advantage of the nice weather to check out the new part of the Kennedy Center complex, which includes a pedestrian bridge to get to the Potomac river from the Kennedy center.
the 30,000 missed georgia votes is an old story that has been proven false. don't get me wrong, I'm sure there were some miscountings/irregularities in some places, but not enough to affect the overall outcome of the election.
https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/factcheck/2021/06/01/fact-check-georgia-audit-hasnt-found-30-000-fake-ballots/5253184001/
And the storyline that the vice president has the power to reject electoral college votes has also been disproven, making the attack on the capitol a waste of time. it saddens me that so many normally law abiding people were suckered into believing otherwise - by Trump.
hi Al, I'm more concerned about the next step in the evolution of right wing rejection of how our government needs to operate for us to stay one country and not having to learn Russian or Chinese.
hi bbotcs, its funny that no one talks about the Arizona audit anymore.
https://www.foxnews.com/politics/maricopa-county-audit-concludes-similar-vote-total-to-2020-presidential-election
the Arizona election was very close. With its results affirmed, no one is gonna try to prove that Pennsylvania's 150,000 vote difference can be over turned. which gives Biden the electoral college votes needed.
so the real question is, like we've both pointed out, if the demographic trend continues, what will disenfranchised red state voters do in response ?
I've been mentioning that were on a path to civil war for years now, but I thought it would start by the west coast succeeding to form their own country (which i refered to as Cascadia). I didn't think it would be caused by propaganda that motivates red state America to revolt.
Hi Ayock, did you know that these 3 people created businesses that employ 1.8 MILLION PEOPLE ?
and those people buy things thereby creating jobs for another 5 or 6 million people ?
Crazy huh ?
So you shop online, use office automation software, stream TV and movies, do you support Biden's agenda for increasing the number of electric vehicles in the US ? These 3 people made these transformational things happen.
Another thing - our economy stopped being run by "Reaganonics" easily 20 years ago. Since around 2000 it is run by Globalizationomics. Which allowed for cheap overseas labor to keep american worker pay low and even displace American workers.
So get over it.
Hi bbotcs, yeah you would think he has sufficient immunity already. But maybe that immunity disappears in older people in not so good health ?
In a variation of "follow the money" lets follow the election results.
If you look at Pennsylvania, Arizona, North Carolina, and Georgia - if you add up deaths and compare them to the difference in votes in each state, its easy to see that - if you assume most deaths are older republican leaning voters - these states will be blue leaning in 2024 - and no amount of false voter fraud claims will be able to account for the difference.
And if you look at Texas, deaths plus influx of tech workers might tip that state over to blue maybe not in 2024 but possibly 2028.
So the 110,000 covid deaths in these 5 states - so far - could have a real effect on national election results.
https://www.businessinsider.com/trump-says-very-tough-criticize-biden-complimented-warp-speed-vaccine-2021-12?amp
I should also point out that I didn't see any cable news stations mention trumps booster shot, and yelling his audience to get vaccinated until Biden thanked him for getting one.
hi bbotcs, I'm in favor of effects mitigation.
If we were to embrace personal responsibility, them unvaccinated people who could use hospitalization will understand when the hospitals choose not to treat them.
Hi Ayock, not a bad suggestion, but it doesn't address the $1.5T needed to pay for it.
Especially since we're gonna need more government spending to keep people employed just a little while longer.
Hi Arizona1, here's something to consider:
https://www.manchin.senate.gov/about/issues/opioids?latest=122
Hi bbotcs, this angle is more likely:
https://www.manchin.senate.gov/about/issues/opioids?latest=122
Manshin wants the child tax credit to return to $2000 per child, but otherwise approves of $1.6T in other BBB spending.
Labelled as a horrible monster by the progressive left who didn't mention the $3000 - $3600 per child tax credit would add over $1.5T to the deficit over 10 years.
hi bbotcs, I'm kinda surprised the west coast hasn't already broken off to become north Americas version of Chile. Their economy is strong enough and would be even stronger if they didn't have to send money to DC.
hey Al, I suspect Trump is tired of seeing his most rabid supporters dying by the thousands.
Trump's supporters booed and jeered when he revealed he got a booster shot and is pro-vaccination
There's a not-so-subtle message in this somewhere .....
https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/politics/trump-s-supporters-booed-and-jeered-when-he-revealed-he-got-a-booster-shot-and-is-pro-vaccination/ar-AARZD9T?ocid=winp1taskbar
Yup, racism is all over the place.
https://sanfrancisco.cbslocal.com/2021/12/15/asian-american-attacks-san-jose-robbery-crew-suspects/
Let me know what happens to the robber.
hey Al, there's a reason why its illegal to drive drunk or without a seatbelt.
cuz when someone does, someone else has to clean up the mess.
https://www.cnbc.com/2021/12/15/covid-delta-drives-surge-of-us-infections-hospitalizations-amid-omicron-fears.html
I agree - robbing that family's House was definitely a racist act.
So is attacking elderly Asians.
We need to find a way to convince people to stop behaving like this.
Hannity's Texts Warn Trump that Capitol Riot will Boost CNN's Ratings
Probably the real truth.
https://www.newyorker.com/humor/borowitz-report/hannity-sent-texts-warning-trump-that-capitol-riot-was-helping-cnns-ratings
GM Al, Coincidence ?
https://wpde.com/news/nation-world/study-risk-of-dying-from-covid-50-percent-higher-in-red-states
The vaccines aren't perfect, but for now, non vaccinated people are more than 10 times more likely to need hospitalization than vaccinated people.
And Pfizer has a pill that hopefully will reduce hospitalizations and deaths by a factor of 10. So hopefully by next summer, the danger of catching covid will decrease dramatically.
But I have a funny feeling that some of us will be wearing masks, for flu and covid, every winter from here on out.
Trump was pro-insurrection.
We already knew this.
But what we now know is all of the people - very close to Trump - who were against it.
And yes, Fox News Infotainment stars took a page out of CNN's "Mostly Peaceful Protest" handbook.
and shockingly, no police officers were involved !
https://www.vladtv.com/article/278467/violent-brawl-breaks-out-after-real-estate-convention-in-atlantic-city
hi ayock, thanks.
what you think is a blind spot is really just a holistic and fair perspective. injustice is everywhere. i, and many others have been treated unfairly at work. elderly Asians are preyed upon. unattractive, overweight people are body shamed and excluded socially.
then there's the issue of personal responsibility or lack of it. along with that the understanding that actions have consequences. when these things are missing, terrible things like record homicides, elderly Asian beatings, and smash and grab crimes occur.
if you are responsible or for public safety and day in and day out this is all you deal with all day every day, its gonna affect you.
our society provides free food, free education, and so many other socials services and volunteer services for anyone who needs it. yet somehow, a narrative has evolved to blame the people providing that generosity for not doing enough.
and if a group of people, living paycheck to paycheck, hear it enough, they are going to act out.
so instead of insisting on false narratives, we should be addressing root causes. like reducing our defense budget by $50b and using that to provide health care and training to those who currently can't afford it. like fixing the horrific income inequality at the top 1%.
I'm sorry the facts I post bother you both so much.
it makes you no different than people who believe the election was stolen.
So did you happen to notice all the countries diplomatically boycotting the Beijing Olympics ? just a bunch more China boogeyman obsessed people, right ?
Hi Arizona1, our system makes it illegal to discriminate based on race and a number of other criteria. So I'm glad that real estate agent was caught doing it. Sooo we agree that the couples white friends who stood in for them aren't racist ? Just checking.
By the way, the "system" makes it perfectly legal to discriminate against overweight or unattractive people. and it happens all the time.
She was surprised by how many young African-American women were at risk for cardiovascular disease. "These women were obese, with diabetes or hypertension at really young ages, in their 30s," says Bower, who noticed that the women lived in unsafe neighborhoods, often with no parks, gyms, or supermarkets, where the convenience stores sold junk food.
Don't confuse cultural differences, income, and lack of nutritional guidance with race or racism.
First, she says, health care providers should not only talk with patients about what to eat but also recommend sources for healthy food in their neighborhoods. Second, community initiatives such as farmers markets and mobile food vans can help fill the gap.
Don't claim that generosity and free social services are attributes of white supremacy.
"Local policymakers should be looking at the quality of infrastructure in poor and minority neighborhoods to see if it could better support businesses,"
Andddddd we're back to this being mostly a poor neighborhood issue.
So all of us taxpayers and income earners OF ALL RACES are doing our best to provide decent food for our underprivileged citizens (and non-citizens). I know I do. Keep the parents from going hungry, but most importantly, give disadvantaged children the nutrition they need so they can do well in school, sports, and the arts. and stay in school. My county provided TWO FREE MEALS EVERY DAY (maybe even on weekends, I'm not sure) to underprivileged kids so they have the attention span and energy required for their school day. So to label this generosity as white supremacy is just plain wrong.
It doesn't make any sense at all, and let me tell you why:
There are plenty of African Americans who don't live in food deserts.
Food deserts are located in inner cities where grocery stores aren't economically feasible. It has nothing to do with race.
Hopefully you understand this.
I don't understand why you associate hard work, devotion to family, and generosity with White Supremacy.
There are definitely a lot of ignorant racist people out there.
But not to be outdone, there are people like this: https://news.yahoo.com/duke-university-researchers-farmer-apos-185146729.html
Yup, its true, working hard, being generous, caring about families .... its awful what white people do sometimes.
hi Ayock, I'm renaming the part of the street in front of my house to "elderly Asian lives matter plaza".
hi arizona1, if you have to be 25 or older to own a gun, then a 15 year old wouldn't be able to.unlock it.
unless the actual owner unlocked it for him or her. which of course would be illegal.
it wouldnt stop all the senseless shooting, but it would stop most of them
I think they prefer guns.
Yeah. There's a big difference between having the right to bear arms and thinking you have right to shoot them at other people.
All guns should have electronic locks on them. If you're not the owner, you cant fire it. There should also be an automatic safety on every gun. If you havent fired it after a minute, the safety automatically comes on.
And based on gun violence and other statistics, the age of maturity for gun ownership should be 25 - maybe even higher.
These 3 things alone would eliminate soooo much gun violence.
don't worry arizona1, it'll probably be just a matter of time before they use their "white privilege" to
run over people in a Christmas parade
beat up elderly Asians
smash and grab jewelry from shopping malls
Hi Arizona1, thank you for helping me point out that people shouldn't mistake correlation for causality.
Things aren't always about race.
hi ayock, although African Americans are only 15% of our population, 70% of NFL players are African american.
there can't be any explanation for this other than discrimination.
hi ayock, I'm fascinated by the false narrative that slavery, our civil war, segregation in the south, and the civil rights movement are not taught to our children.
we have a holiday in honor of a leader of the civil rights movement.in fact its the ONLY HOLIDAY that honors an individual american.
and February is African American history month with plenty of public service spots honoring African Americans and the struggles they've endured.
what the left seems not to want kids to know about is the abolisionist movement of the early 1800s. a movement so strong that it created a new political party in 1850 and got Lincoln elected in 1860. after which south Carolina promptly seceeded from the US.
what the left seems not to want kids to know about is how much money nd effort has been spent since 1970 subsidizing and elevating african americans. all the affirmative action, scholarships, free food, education programs, after school programs, and so on. did you know that 40% of African American families earn the median American family income or higher ?
why does the left want to sweep those parts of our history under the rug ?
Imagine wanting to live in a country you think has a horrible history.
ALL of history - western, asian, middle eastern, African - is horrible if all you want to consider is the horrible parts.
yet crazy as it sounds, there have been enormous accomplishments. Maybe Hanna should watch "How the Victorians Built Britain" and appreciate how crappy things were FOR Everyone in the early 1800s.
I'm glad Hanna expressed herself via the internet, cuz it was created by white american men.
BAM !
here's one for you Al -
the origins of western democracy, philosophy, and scientific reasoning can be traced to the ancient greeks.
but the ancient Greeks were white slave owners.
so I guess we should reject their views on democracy, philosophy, and science.
its nice to see that occupy democrats finally got one right.
but I can't wait to see how the current vaccine does against the new varriant.
