I guess a better demo would involve some server type application, like Java or Web server, or even SAP. Even running a simple Monte Carlo analysis would have been something. Task Manager tells you bumpkiss.
This is a fact!
Tom West of Data General would not release the Avion system until it would bring "Dongeons & Dragons play to x Level.

Dear Pete,
The fact I did not succeed installing Linux to my book is certainly not due to its CPU. It's either the plattform or my talents. (Anything can go wrong. I have seen folks inserting CDs face down into drives and complain bitterly the shit does not work right ;<) ).
Don't feel bad! After building machines for many years I pulled a real boner when I put the quad together. I had it laying on it's side and slid a CD_Rom into it. I then stood it up went into BIOS to boot from it to install the OS. The case was facing a bit the other way so I felt around for the button to open it, placed the CD on the tray and gave it a nudge only to have the CD spit onto the floor. Did it again, on the floor!
You may have figured it out.
I had the drive in upside down...WTF.
Pretty dum no?

Do you have it up and running on one processor? I'd certainly
take a look at a system if it was sold as a box. I'm not into
building systems these days.
mmoy.
I did for a time, long enough to do some testing with memtest-86.
Have both processors installed now. It will run fine on one proc and one memory stick installed.
I'm still playing around with it on the bench. Installed 2 gig's of memory, it sees all of it. I have another 2 gig to test.
This thing is fast and no where as loud as I expected. In fact it's pretty quiet. The two 120mm fans move a lot of air quietly. The PSU has one also as well as a smaller one.
The case is real nice, heavy, well built. The only drives that use screws are HD's. The CD-Rom drives slide in and have plastic clips that work well, one can use screws in addition if desired. The mobo is, as you would imagine...big. It's crowded inside. Cable tied are cheap!
The mobo has what ASUS calls an "Easy Plug",a 12v 4 pin molex connector for use with 2 graphics cards. If you only have one like I do it triggers a PSU shutdown, circuit protection! With one video card, don't use it if you have a new PSU with circuit protection. Will email Thermaltake and advise them that the hole in the rear of the case (after the plate is removed) should be made another 1/64" wider in both directions. Or get out a metal file.
NewEgg doesn't seem to list any FX-7 series, don't know why?
Intel based ASUS striker mobo uses the same chipsets.
Nvidia put 2 590 chips on board. You can team up both network connections to work as one. I got the 5MB bandwith option from Charter. The download rates are expressed in MB's instead of Kbs's. Saw "dloading @ 4.2 MB's sec.
At some point I'm sure FX-7 prebuilt systems will become availible.

Well, Mike was trying to determine if the prices on his list
were for one or for two. I didn't see the actual post that
the buyer only got one. I just read about the order.
My reading of Mike's list left me unclear as to whether the
price was for one or for two which is why I asked. Looking at
Newegg's prices for the package, it appeared to me that the
price was for one though there was some mention here that the
the motherboard was $250 to $400.
If the 5600+ is 130 watts, then it's not going to show up in
a laptop. At 65, it has a shot if someone will build it.
I received so far.
Case: $159.99
Mobo: $429.99
Fx-74:$550.00
NV 8800GTX $599.00
PSU: $349.00
Waiting for.
Corsair Mem: $618.00
One FX-74 in box, expected that, ordered another.
Getting the Enermax Galaxcy 1kw watt into the case was a pain. Even after removing the plate that holds it, it didn't fit thru the rear, A file would have done it but I'm not crazy about iron filings, so I had to pull the front of the case off and go in that way. Other than that the case is a work of art, very well designed IMHO.
Yes it's a Hummer, but I like it!!!
The kids I have left are doing well.
The grandkids are doing well.
Future great grandkids WILL do well.
See what happens when you get to be 72 and you have too much time and money in your hands.
BTW, I remember well when I didn't have two nickels to rub together.
I say have fun be happy.
Thank you Prime Comp, EMC, Intel, AMD, and a few other Co's.
:)

I don't know!
Mr. Bennet said the box came with two FX-74's!
I do indeed take Mr. Bennets word, as opposed to chip...who.
If however, the box contains only one core, I will buy another, no big deal.
Chipface or whatever his name is. Must remember, I made enough money with AMD stock to buy a 1000 ( 1 Thousand ) of thes units, if I so chose.
PSL I made a lot of money with Intel.

I went and did it!
Ordered the Quad FX promo package from NewEgg.

Bought it with the FX-74.
Purchased 4 gig Corsair XMS2 DDR2-800Mhz, 4-4-4-12-2T.
Also got a BFG-GForce 8800GTX and a Enermax 1000 Watt PSU.
Kyle Bennet claims two FX-74's are packed in each box?

The L1N64-SLI mobo has two NV-590 chips and can be set up for an effective HT-2000 speed, the chipset is NV-680a. The 680i is for intel, would you...
I have a drive with WinXP-64 on it. I will use this drive to get it to post, then test the memory with memtest-86 and Ortho after that. Then I will set up a few Raptors to boot the OS from RAID-0.
It's a power hog with all the CPU's, SLI vid, fans, etc., don't care, for now. I will be able to drop a few K8L's in when the time comes.
If this thing, (when I get the parts), won't run FSX with decent frames I give up.
I know their are other cheaper solutions right now, intel based. I just like AMD's platform and can see an upgrade path that I'm not sure itel has?
I like what I like, so spare me any advice regarding other solutions.

You are claiming that AMD will blame any problems they may have today on what transpired years ago, i.e. intel misdeeds.

No, I don't know it. You state that the reason AMD cannot meet demand (if this is true and not some manufacturing problem that has been hinted at) is because years ago (supposedly) Intel blocked their ability to produce (and supposedly profit), I say BS and the court will not buy it. AMD had an obligation to their stockholders to assess future demand and meet that demand. Intel could easily point out that AMD acquired ATI had huge (and I mean HUGE debt) they are assessing their future. Find some other reason to slam Intel - surely there are better statements that yours.

"your honor, we couldn't meet demand because - uh - 6 years ago Intel supposedly blocked us from selling in Europe..." AMD has had other resources and other ways of doing business and if they did not plan well in advance of their partnership with Dell, I don't think there's a court in the USA that is going to wrap around something that may or may not have happened. I have read that AMD may be having manufacturing problems, and I'm sure Intel can bring that into court, also basck in 99-2000 AMD had a lesser performing chip. The EU is preparing a case against Intel supposedly and that is where AMD will have to go to get recompensation.""
No. What you said in essence was that if AMD is doing well WRT Dell then AMD would not have a case.
Thats BS, and you know it!

The court will decide, if intel is found guilty as charged and according to the "Clayton Act", AMD may well be in a position to receive triple damages.

[i}The data has not changed on Intel's management though, bumbling as usual . The SI faithful were buying in the teens after the ATI deal so I haven't cost them squat. You all have conveniently forgot that AMD is still up from there . Again you offer a simplistic product analysis which takes no account of new major OEM opportunities or capacity restrictions being removed from AMD or even mix quantities. I really don't need to get with any program you make up as it will be incomplete and sorely lacking .{/i}

Some of these people like plyngso make me smile.
I built up just under 20,000 shares of AMD after a very succesfull run with EMC and intel and a few others in the 80's 90s.
I bought between 3.xx and 7.xx for a basis of $4.62.
Bought and sold, rinse & repeated 2-3 times. I still have 18,000 shares.
Got my investment back more than a few times and made a few to boot!
Hell my Prime Computer shares split 6 times. I wonder if plyngso was around then.

I haven't run into this situation where the OS doesn't have a driver for the hard drive. What's also odd is that my desktop sounds like it has a pretty similar chipset and disk setup.
I guess that I'd give the trial version a shot (latest CD). I
have no experience with trying to "patch" an installation CD.[i/]
I had problems with installing a single SATA drive on a few occasions. Some mobo's cmae with SATA drivers that worked, using the F6 option, others did not.
What i found did work every time was SATA RAID configuretions.
One had to be carefull and install both the single AND RAID drivers included.
I agree that a Widows native driver would be most helpfull in illiminating these problems.

No, it's really not. When I was posting on Yahoo, we discovered 64 bit extensions in a Sempron...It was unannounced, and I am posting from it now. Ran Ubuntu 64bit version and Windows64.
It was reported at Anand and at the AMDboard.
AMD does this quite often, adding new code gradually, and the dual core release is a more conservative approach to chip development, and makes more sense.

This doesn't change the point: Reuters made an error, and should have said "systems containing the chips are expected to ship by..." when using the August dates, for the chips themselves have already started shipping, as Intel wrote in their earnings release, an unlikely place for a lie.

AM2 motherboard owners rejoice, AM2 has a long future
AMD has released details of its next-generation desktop CPU interface, Socket AM3, to its OEM partners. In a mildly surprising move, AMD has revealed that AM2 will accept AM2 or AM3 CPU packages. Additionally, recent roadmaps have confirmed that AM3, AMD's upcoming desktop CPU socket, will not be backwards compatible with AM2-package CPUs. Roadmaps and memos have also confirmed that this AM3 package will be for AMD's "K8L" architecture, and not for the upcoming 65nm AM2 Brisbane CPUs scheduled for launch this December.
The most recent AMD roadmap is also very clear to state AM3 "supports either DDR2 SDRAM or DDR3 SDRAM, but not on the same motherboard." This is great news for upgraders, as there is a very clear upgrade path: CPU, motherboard, and then memory. This also infers that AM3 CPUs will have both DDR2 and DDR3 support on the integrated memory controller. DDR3, like DDR2, has 240-pin, but the two formats are not pin-compatible.
As we also mentioned earlier, Greyhound will be the first desktop processor to support HyperTransport 3.0. Part of the specification for HT-3 is backwards compatibility with older revisions of HyperTransport, and the forward compatibility of the AM2 socket confirms that. However, it’s important to mention that even though AM3 CPUs will work in the AM2 socket, HT-3 allows for 5.2 Giga-transfers per second, while current AM2 motherboards top out at 2.0 Giga-transfers per second. Even though the additional headroom is likely not completely necessary, quad-core CPUs will certainly benefit from the additional bandwidth to the DDR3 memory.
There is no word yet on the number of pins the new socket will require, but since AM2 sockets are forward compatible with AM3 CPUs, we can at least deduct that AM3 will have fewer than 940 pins. Furthermore, since Socket AM2 is forwards compatible with AM3 CPUs, it is also safe to say that AM3 is not a land-grid array (LGA) socket. AMD will switch its Opteron platform to an LGA-1207 socket on August 1, 2006. AMD has not announced when Socket AM3 will be released, although since it would be the first HT-3 "ready" socket design, it seems likely that K8L and AM3 for the desktop will launch simultaneously.

US government unit throws Intel out over RAID problems
IBM ServeRAID problem
By Theo Valich: Thursday 06 July 2006, 09:15
WHEN WE BROKE the story about Core 2 marchitecture problems with RAID configurations here, one of the things that interested us the most is the open question: RAID for Conroe isn't much of a deal, but is it a problem with the aarchitecture and could Woodcrest suffer from the same problems?
The answer was surprising and came far sooner than we'd expect. We have learned that the policy of Government Accountability Office (GAO), is very simple: all of systems have to pass a mandatory four-month operational test before any final contracts are awarded.
WoodCrest systems were delivered for an evaluation for one of the US government departments, and it all ended up in tears, with Woodcrest being rejected in the first round of trials. The reason was that there were severe problems when Woodcrest was paired with a 1E RAID field when using IBM ServeRAID controllers. The problems didn't occur just in benchmarking, it was the every-day usage model that produced unexpected errors.
Worse of all, several problematic situations occurred during the trial period and Intel was heavily criticised in internal memos, all ending up in a really unexpected manner. Since the company has allegedly been aware of the problems and didn't responded in a timely manner, the supply contract was then lost and awarded to a different product coming from a competing company, which passed the field test with flying colours. µ

imtel having problems.
DE and friends would help
By Charlie Demerjian: Thursday 06 July 2006, 09:47
THE WORD IS that Intel is having problems with i965 motherboards. The problem, however, isn't with the chipset itself, that part is doing well enough, but related to IDE, or lack thereof.
In a case of great timing, it seems that the ICH8 doesn't have IDE ports, and, well, there is a distinct lack of S-ATA optical drives out there. Now let me see, where have I heard that before? Ah yes, now I recall. Talk about timing.
One source tells us that Intel is roping Marvell into 'welding' a SATA/PATA PCI controller to the south bridge, something that is taking a lot of custom engineering. The problem is that the current version, the fifth, still won't boot a Linux or Windows install CD. Oops. In the irony of all ironies, Intel has to resort to using the Plextor SATA DVD drive to install an OS.
OK, funny as this is, in a "look at the stupid kid that jumped off a building and landed on his face" kind of way, there is a deeper lesson here. I keep ranting about how Intel screws their partners, and it bites them in the ass, and this is a prime example. If i965s are broken, then where do you turn? Via? Sis? ATI? NV? Hmm, the door was shut on them for the high end a while ago, and they certainly won't have parts ready for launch. Who does Intel turn to? That leaves, oh listen, you can hear crickets chirp on such a clear night.
Basically, there is no plan B anymore, and as AMD has pointed out with painful clarity recently, Intel stumbles on occasion when under duress. With no parts in the bank, tight timetables, and a gutted partner programme, when you slip, the only thing you get is knives in the back. The i965, fine chip though it may be, coupled with Conroe, fine chip though it is, would be a lot better off if it had a friend. µ

{i}Re: Realized my origanal investment + a few $$.
Congratulations on that. But I'll ask you what I have already asked others. Are you still holding AMD now, or are you currently out?{/i}
As Istated above,"Realized my origanal investment + a few $$.
"
I recalced my position, Origan $4.62, now $4.66.
This after realizing my original invesment.
In other words I lost a few cents, DCA.
I still have the 40,000 shares.
What to do?
I still think the value is in AMD. In spite of the fact that intel has much more in resources than AMD.
Call me a surviver, lucky.
Call me a gambler!
In fact I'm heading for Foxwoods this evening.

{i]Re: I can't believe this is the AMD board...there are more Intel investors than AMD investors here
Fair enough, let's talk about AMD as an investment. Down almost 50% from it's high, eh...?
Indeed, lets talk.
$40,000 @ $4.62.
Realized my origanal investment + a few $$.
BTW, I had intel when it was a worthwile investment.
It may prove to be so again, but not yet by a long shot.
Amazing I was able to make a few dollars and maintain my DCA (dollar cost avarage}.
Call me lucky or whatever suits you.

Weak Processor Demand Strikes AMD
http://www.forbes.com/2006/06/22/amd-0622markets06_print.html
The analyst lowered second-quarter revenue to $1.22 billion from $1.29 billion and full-year 2006 and 2007 post-option earnings-per-share estimates to $1.40 and $1.74 from $1.58 and $1.94, respectively.
Bear Stearns rates AMD at "peer perform."
I wonder if thisANALyst realizes that AMD is ramping up a new FAB, (FAB-36).
"Increase not alarming".
Perhaps he thinks back to school product should appear magicaly at exactly the day before it's needed.
These guy's amaze me.

Jules - I'd have to agree on the ugly Town car part(most of them, at least). Now they have had some quite nice Continentals, though. I'm afraid I'd probably still take a Lexus, though, which would be a more appropriate comparison than Toyota-Lincoln. Maybe Toyota-Ford or Toyota-Mercury.
Paul, Agree, disagree, I could care less!
When you buy and pay for my vehicles you can pick em out.
Untill then...

When they ride down to foxwoods in my Lincoln Towncar they say what a nice ride, what room. This car is quiet. No noise. Comfortable car.
Quiet, except for the sqealing tires when you take that 35mph corner at anything over 38... comfortable, except for the massive body roll and brake dive... roomy - we'll give you that one. Ugly? What about ugly?
I didn't say it was a sports car. I had a 32-37-41 Ford coups, I had 54-55 Chevy Corvettes. I had Offy powered Sprint cars and a few midgets. I had a few Fourmula 4 cars, small but fun.
So spare me the BS.
I equip my Lincolns with HD shocks and HD anti sway bars.
My tires don't squeal, you would be surprised at how well it tracks arround corners, handles great for it's size!
I'm over 70, Owned a motercycle shop and used car dealership.
Racing was my thing for years. My late kid brother took over 75 of those little statues home from the drag strip at Epping NH.
Ugly. depends how you look at yourself I suppose.

Apparently, Intel is actively solving the scalability problem. You can expect a lot more than AMD offers now from Intel in 2008. It's always better re-engineered. Thanks for showing the way... LOL.
Smooth
You mean 2008 will be like 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, and 2006.???
You just made my day.
OTOH some proof would be nice for a change!

Hey Jules that's a good one...
Maybe Intel can market their product differently...
Talk that long smooth processing ride down the processing lane and on those cold winter nights we'll keep ya toasty warm with that hot cup O' coco...
I guess its how ya package and sell it...No...:>)
Absolutly!!!

Price, reliability, reputation, status, coolness factor. I would be a Toyota over a GM in the small car arena, but I might buy a GM for a big car.
Tecate, maybe there is hope for you.:)
Many of my pal's and wives have Toyota's, not saying their bad cars, not at all.
When they ride down to foxwoods in my Lincoln Towncar they say what a nice ride, what room. This car is quiet. No noise. Comfortable car.
Yada, yada,yada.
