Astronauts will assemble robot in space
This illustration provided by The Canadian Space Agency (CSA) displays "Dextre" (Special Purpose Dexterous Manipulator).
Astronauts bound for orbit this week will dabble in science fiction, assembling a "monstrous" two-armed space station robot that will rise like Frankenstein from its transport bed. CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. --
Astronauts bound for orbit this week will dabble in science fiction, assembling a "monstrous" two-armed space station robot that will rise like Frankenstein from its transport bed.
Putting together Dextre, the robot, will be one of the main jobs for the seven Endeavour astronauts, who are scheduled to blast off in the wee hours of Tuesday, less than three weeks after the last shuttle flight.
They're also delivering the first piece of Japan's massive Kibo space station lab, a float-in closet for storing tools, experiments and spare parts. For the first time, each of the five major international space station partners will own a piece of the real estate.
At 16 days, the mission will be NASA's longest space station trip ever and will include five spacewalks, the most ever performed while a shuttle is docked there. Three of those spacewalks will feature Dextre, which is sure to steal the show.
With 11-foot arms, a shoulder span of nearly 8 feet and a height of 12 feet, the Canadian Space Agency's Dextre - short for dexterous and pronounced like Dexter - is more than a little intimidating, at least for astronaut Garrett Reisman.
"Now I wouldn't go as far to say that we're worried it's going to go run amok and take over the space station or turn evil or anything because we all know how it's operated and it doesn't have a lot of its own intelligence," Reisman told The Associated Press last week.
"But I'll tell you something ... He's enormous and to see him with his giant arms, it is a little scary. It's a little monstrous, it is."
Dextre will be flying up aboard Endeavour in pieces, and it will be up to a team of spacewalking astronauts to assemble the 3,400-pound robot and attach it to the outside of the space station. That job will fall to Reisman, Michael Foreman and Richard Linnehan.
"I feel kind of like dad on Christmas Eve, you know, opening up this present and trying to put it together for the son or daughter and going, 'Whoa, what have I gotten myself into here with this 'some assembly required' part of the space station," Foreman said.
Reisman, who will be moving into the space station, can't wait to see Dextre rise from its shuttle transport pallet, rotating up "almost like it's Frankenstein's monster coming alive."
In reality, there's nothing sinister about Dextre. The robot, in fact, was once in the running to be the Hubble Space Telescope's savior.
Following the 2003 Columbia disaster, NASA canceled the last remaining Hubble repair mission by shuttle astronauts because of safety concerns, and considered sending Dextre up to do the job. The shuttle flight was restored after a change at NASA's helm - it's scheduled for late summer - and Dextre went back to being a space station assistant.
Dextre - which cost more than $200 million - was created by the same Canadian team that built the space shuttle and space station robot arms.
Equipped with a tool holster, Dextre is designed to assist spacewalking astronauts and, ultimately, to take over some of their dangerous outdoor work.
Dextre can pivot at the waist, and has seven joints per arm. Its hands, or grippers, have built-in socket wrenches, cameras and lights. Only one arm is designed to move at a time to keep the robot stable and avoid a two-arm collision. The robot has no face or legs, and with its long arms certainly doesn't look human.
Space station astronauts will be able to control Dextre, as will flight controllers on the ground. The robot will be attached at times to the end of the space station arm, and also be able to ride by itself along the space station arm's railway.
Canadian officials said they're convinced Dextre could have pulled off the Hubble repair job, and should have no problems replacing old batteries and other space station parts.
"It's quite surprising what a robot like Dextre can do with its sense of touch and its precision," said Daniel Rey, a Canadian Space Agency engineer who heads the project.
Dextre has only three tools, for now, versus the more than 100 tools available to spacewalking astronauts, Rey said. It will probably take months to learn how to properly use the robot; its first real job could come next year.
Linnehan, who worked on Hubble in 2002, wonders just how much Dextre will be able to do.
Even though it's suited for space station maintenance, astronauts are faster, Linnehan said. As for Hubble, he said Dextre cannot compare to a human repairman because it lacks fine motor control, and cannot think and react to problems that might crop up.
That said, Linnehan acknowledges it's "a cool project" that reminds him of Japanese animation shows from decades past, namely Gigantor the space-age robot. NASA officials agree that a big part of Dextre is learning how robots operate in space, for future exploration.
Dextre, by the way, isn't necessarily a "he."
"I tend to use 'he' because I think Dextre is a masculine name," Rey said. "But it's a robot. It's tele-operated. It doesn't have artificial intelligence yet. So I need to be more careful when I say 'he.' "

EDITORIAL: Innova departure wake-up call for us
The announcement of Innova Robotics & Innovation's departure this week from Southwest Florida is chilling, because it bodes poorly for state and local efforts to diversify our economy.
It means we have to do more as a state and region to recruit and retain companies, especially in the technology field.
This is key to 21st century business.
The Florida Chamber Foundation released a report at the end of last year identifying strategies for economic development centered around "The 4 Ts," or trade, tourism, talent and technology.
On technology, the report observed modest gains in some areas while showing that Florida paled in comparison with competitor states and nations in research and development spending.
Innova moved its headquarters from Fort Myers to Washington state. Interim CEO Spencer Lloyd said: "Right now, we are reshaping what Florida is all about for us. Florida is evolving."
A few months ago technology-related company NeoMedia Technologies Inc. relocated to Atlanta.
We need to reverse this trend, and increase our investment in technology. For our state's sake.

SPIN says: it's tragically comical that the fishwrap bozos running the ft. liars news-press would actually comment on the "fleeing" of scamnova as if it somehow related to the economic prospects of something other than a close circle of greedy and unethical penny stock cronies feasting on the dollars of ordinary investors through deliberate deception. although regionally, it might result in a net reduction in mechanics liens, unpaid property taxes, defaulted loans, and the like.
hosting secret meetings in ft. liars isn't exactly a solid start lloyd... hopefully weisel at least took you on a ride on the yacht. he sure took investors for one to acquire it.

General Dynamics' Westminster facility awarded $40M robotics contract
Baltimore Business Journal - by Mike Sunnucks Contributor
Tuesday, February 26, 2008 - 10:35 AM EST
[Washington, D.C.]
General Dynamics has been awarded a $40 million U.S. military contract to manufacture "semi-autonomous" robotic security vehicles.
The work will be performed by General Dynamics' Robotic Systems Division at its Westminster facility in Carroll County.
Falls Church, Va.-based General Dynamics (NYSE: GD) announced the Pentagon contract Monday.
The robotic vehicles will be able to investigate incidents and monitor "high-value incidents", according to the defense contractor.
GD and the Pentagon have been testing the robot vehicles since 2005. They can autonomously survey incident scenes and conduct patrols and surveillance.
They can reach speeds up to 20 miles per hour and operate 16 hours without refueling, General Dynamics officials said in a statement.

Paro has his battery charged after making the rounds with residents of Shell Point.
mechanical marvel: paro is the perfect pal
Japanese creator visits Shell Point
By By Tim Engstrom
tengstrom@news-press.com
Originally posted on February 13, 2008
The words "cuddly" and "robot" may be an awkward match, but no one tells that to Paro the robotic seal as they scratch his furry white head.
Paro is the creation of Takanori Shibata, a senior research scientist with the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology in Japan.
The 2-foot-long, 6-pound robot and Shibata are visiting Lee County this week to promote the robots as therapeutic aids to the elderly and ill.
Shibata said people that interact with the robot tend to be cheered up, motivated and talkative, just like those who care for animals.
"We know that caring for animals is very good for humans, but some people aren't able to care for animals and there are places you can't keep animals," Shibata said. "But Paro is easy."
The robot's power charge even comes from a plugged-in pacifier. Paro is an abbreviation of the Japanese pronunciation of personal robot.
Shibata on Tuesday took Paro to visit residents of the Larsen Pavilion skilled nursing facility at the Shell Point Retirement Community south of Fort Myers.
After Shibata introduced his creation, he was quickly passed from lap to lap among the residents.
As they scratched the robot's head, the robot arched its back to look them in the eye. If they scratched one side of its neck or the other, it would turn its head to make the reach easier. All the while, the robot whimpered and cooed like the baby Harp seal it is modeled after.
"I thought he was very, very cute," said resident Jan Rogowskey, 82.
The emotions that the robot elicits are why Shibata refers to his creation as a "mental commitment robot." People tend to instinctually believe in it and be affectionate to it.
Shibata said he modeled the robot after a seal because people think they are cute, but have little personal experience with them.
He also created a robotic cat, but people didn't respond to it like they do the seal.
"People know about real cats, so they expect too much from the robot," he said. "They say 'that's not right.'"
About 1,000 of the seals have been sold in Japan for about $3,500 each. About 70 percent of them have been sold to individuals who tend to them as if they were pets.
There is no widespread distribution in the U.S., but that is something that local robotics guru Walter Weisel would like to change.
"When Dr. Shibata was describing Paro, I noticed some people were napping," Weisel said. "When he started letting them hold it, no one was sleeping. They all were watching and asking for their turn."
Weisel, former chairman of Innova Robotics and Automation, is now chief executive officer of International Business Link, promoting personal robotics.
He also has visits planned for Shibata this week at Lee Memorial HealthPark and Florida Gulf Coast University.
Linda Hicks, an activities leader at the Pavilion, said she was impressed with how residents reacted to the robot.
"I saw some smiles on some residents' faces today that aren't easy to pull out of them," she said.
Karen Woods, a graduate nursing student who helped arrange the visit to Shell Point, said she thinks the cuddly device has real value.
"It's definitely therapeutic for the residents here at Shell Point or other nursing facilities," said Woods, who is studying geriatric psychiatry.
Woods' parents, Charles and Bobbie Greer, who live elsewhere at Shell Point, were on hand for the demonstration.
"The eyes are so real," Bobbie Greer, 84, said.
But Charles Greer, 85, a retired electrical engineer, was more interested in the twin, 32-bit computer processors and electric motors beneath the artificial fur.
"It's fantastic in that aspect," he said.
Shibata said the robots have an expected "lifespan" of 10 to 20 years and there are Paro clinics in Japan for regular tune-ups.
