General Dynamics' Westminster facility awarded $40M robotics contract

[Washington, D.C.]

General Dynamics has been awarded a $40 million U.S. military contract to manufacture "semi-autonomous" robotic security vehicles.

The work will be performed by General Dynamics' Robotic Systems Division at its Westminster facility in Carroll County.

Falls Church, Va.-based General Dynamics (NYSE: GD) announced the Pentagon contract Monday.

The robotic vehicles will be able to investigate incidents and monitor "high-value incidents", according to the defense contractor.

GD and the Pentagon have been testing the robot vehicles since 2005. They can autonomously survey incident scenes and conduct patrols and surveillance.

They can reach speeds up to 20 miles per hour and operate 16 hours without refueling, General Dynamics officials said in a statement.

PS just because the registrant is not selling the 48M shares, doesn't mean those shares are not being sold -- IMO.
