oh, be kind, MP. i thought he did fine. tough act to follow, as you know. he's gonna do well for us.
i'm not gonna see any of you in that blockbuster, am i?
Whew, Dilleet... that's quite an 'incidentally'.
Best of luck, this Holiday Season. I'll be looking forward to your posts after Monday.
<<Not noticeable differences in network quality for this user.>>
I'm sure some areas are much better for AT&T coverage. I just saw an article about AT&T's 3G service expanding significantly in NY.
But here, in the SE, AT&T doesn't have the same penetration, tho they (supposedly) are expanding the number of towers here in my town... which they should do, if for no other reason then one of AT&T's Board members is one of this community's leading citizens. I know it must be embarrassing as heck for him.
<<I wouldnt be nearly so quick to dismiss LG. The handset might not be quite as nice as an iPhone, but one thing it does have is a substantially better network than AT&T. >>
say it again, brother! i love my iPhone, but i'm embarrassed showing it off sometimes, especially in places where the AT&T service sucks and my friends pull out their verizon phones and have no problem at all. 'Hmmm..I like the way it looks', they say mockingly.
Thanks, Tom. What a pleasant change for my desktop.
chuck
went ahead and erased it. timemachine IMMEDIATELY recognized it, with out having to reformat or restore or anything.
this is gonna be a VERY intuitive operating system.
fun fun fun
thanks for the tip. in disk utility, do i 'erase'? or do i 'restore'?

Tech Help, Please!
As I was installing Leopard, I ran out to get another external to serve as the TimeMachine target. Picked up a FW 500g Maxtor One Touch 4Plus. It claims to be for windows and mac but after installing it I couldn't get TM to recognize it. I went to 'get info' and t says i only have permission to read (not write) and that it is windows formatted. how did that happen? and is there any way to reformat it for the mac? or do i need to take it back?
BTW- Maxtor's web experience is awful.
TIA for any help
got my leopard a few moments ago! small little package that is perhaps the coolest box i have ever seen!
you'll understand when you see it. take a moment and gaze at it before opening.
geez, they put some money in packaging... well spent but way beyond anybody else.
just another reason to get excited about getting leopard, i suppose.
<<To the iPhone owners on this forum - what are your expectations after 2 years, or after paying a term fee? What do you think your contract says about it.>>
after 2 years, i'll be getting a new iPhone and probably re-upping my at&t contract. at&t's service has improved greatly around here. they are putting up 6 new towers in my town. also, i REALLY like the rollover minutes. I haven't had to go out of the country with it yet, but when i went to costa rica in january with my verizon, it was unusable, too.
<<Hope your friend has an executed NDA before you send off any presentations>>
whew! thanks for reminding me to remind him. he's so frickin' giddy i don't think it's crossed his mind.
Internet Finance Portal
I'm working with a banker friend who has been hard at work developing a very comprehensive approach to assisting individuals and small businesses get better control of all the financial things in their lives or commerce. It's a very broad concept and it looks very promising. I've been helping him design the look of the sight and the slide presentations he is making to investors. He's got his regional bank very interested and a japanese investment group that he's having further meetings with in NY on Wednesday.
but he just left my office after dropping a turd... he is making a presentation to MSFT this week, too. he indicated they showed EXTREME interest and my heart sank. 'Oh no!', i exclaimed. 'haven't you ever heard of MSFT's business plan? Embrace. Extend. Extinguish.?'
'That's BS', he retorted cockily and then instructed us to send a copy of his most recent slide show to them.
Which we did... our Keynote version of the show.
ha ha
<<Completely OT:
Exile on Main St>>
funny you should ask. i bought the LP as a teenager when it first came out and wore out my turntable with it. it was as a very special double album.
i downloaded it via iTunes this week, too, as a matter of fact. did it on my iPhone, which has been dangerous (money-wise). ever since the iTS became available on the iPhone, my download purchases have gone thru the roof and i'm buying full albums at a time, which i rarely did off the desktop.
i downloaded 'main Street' after seeing the title 'exile on mainstream' (or something like that) on a list of current hot albums. 'main street' got in my mind in the 'gotta have it now' kinda way and moments later, it was in my iTunes collection.
this iPhone is gonna break me, i'm sure!
<<Well ahead of my son but I started him at 62 and added with the drop back to 112. Apple now represents 40 percent of his holdings.
Will this dream ever end... :)>>
like you, i didn't get my son in until 63 but (as opposed to my aapl holdings) his won't be touched either for quite a while. i WON'T try timing anything with his shares. Let it run, baby... go go go.
but i sure wish it paid a dividend.
<<Tarmar, I hope you're still hanging on to Goog, >>
You betcha. That one is in the vault, not to be touched. AAPL has found a place there, also. And AAPL IS what's putting the daughter thru college. Bought hers in '92 (200 @ $26) and never touched it. Now 800 @ $160+. She can love me for it later .
WHAT A CLOSE!
Why is my nose bleeding?
Yowser!
<<Oh, wait...I think it might have something to do with the glossy screen on the new 24" iMac.>>
Jay-heezus! Does this mean something showed up today? Surprise? Surprise?
Happy for ya, Bootz. Play away!
Hi BD- thanks for keeping up with this info but minor correction might be in order. Today is the 10th. Didn't the press release state that the 1MM phone was sold yesterday? On the 9th?
picky picky, i know. forgive me.
<<Roxio has sent me about 25 emails trying to get me to upgrade to Toast 8 with a $30 rebate. I refuse to do it just because of the rebate process.>>
perhaps. but toast 8 IS a sweet upgrade, IMHO
oh, KC!
what a great clip!
and is Lowell bombed? or what?
thanks
BTW: here's another fave:
<<We've got a good entertainment lineup. Gerald Albright, Asleep at the Wheel, Little Feat, Kenny Wayne Shepard, ZZ Top & George Carlin>>
The Feat? Jealousy reigns! Have fun
<<iMovie '08 has AVCHD format editing capabilities built-in --no problem.
I've been using the Panasonic HDC-SD1/iMovie '08 combo for a week, and the only problem I had was that iMovie '08 gave me a message to check my USB cable when attempting to download directly from the camcorder, but it worked without any problem when importing directly from the SDHC Card via it's included USB Card Reader. The USB cable may well in fact have been damaged, as I bought the unit from Fry's as a Demo(with all the attendant abuse you'd expect). The Camcorder itself is indeed a very nice unit - very happy with it, and the iMovie '08 combo as well(for ease-of-use, quick-to"market" video production.>>
i read your original post on this, john, and gained some insight/encouragement from it. i have iMovie '08 and haven't played with it yet but am surprised by all the features it leaves out from the '06 version. I'm wondering... can '06 import AVCHD? Or am i entirely relegated to '08 for this camera?
<<I've heard this new panasonic talked recently but haven't used it myself.
Panasonic HDC-SD1 AVCHD 3CCD Flash Memory High Definition Camcorder with 12x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom>>
i just ordered one; it hasn't arrived yet. looking forward to it but i'm getting concerned about the editing difficulties with AVCHD and now iMovie '08.
i think i've bought a format the market ain't entirely up to speed with yet.
we'll see.
my concern is that we're comparing a $79 entry level program to a $500 professional quality program (despite all the faults it has).
<<My concern is that Aperture, Pages, Numbers, new-iMovie, and so on show that Apple's software successes don't result from a broad-based culture of effective development,>
<<No, I tried copy paste from an AW spreadsheet to Numbers and the results of cells with formulas were pasted not formulas themselves.>>
not my experience, at all. i've copied & pasted both AW & excel sheets in separate Numbers files. no problem with either.
<<fwiw, I'm one of the few people who has one of the original iSights.>>
two of 'em, here. one still in use; one in a drawer (the one i got for my daughter as she left for college but who REFUSED to use it (at least in chatting with me)).
<<Events in iPhoto is really nice. >>
I haven't gotten the hang of Events, yet. I have two computers, each with over 5500 pics on them that I have fairly carefully keyworded and grouped into particular folders. The new iPhoto hasn't scrambled those at all but it has put together all these 'events' that seem to reflect nothing more than a close time proximity. Perhaps events will be useful for the newbies, but if you have taken advantage of the tools iPhoto has offered all along, this ain't no big benefit.
JMHO
(however, I DO like 'Hide')
Thanks, Tom. This was fascinating!
<<New iBox - Think Different anniversary.
It began on Jobs' birthday with a call to Chiat/Day.
http://www.electric-escape.net/node/565>>
<<What am I missing?>>
nuttin'. nada.
i'm just reaching for ANYTHING that the lowballers at apple might be using to hold back their enthusiasm for the upcoming qtr.
Oct is in CQ4 so, yes, I am figuring apple to beat its scheduled intro of Leopard.
i agree that OSs should be a margin enhancer. this is all very confusing
glad i held all my shares... and since i did, i think i get to take all the wild a*s guesses i want..
<<OK, but why would the leopard transition explain lower margin? And wasn't Leopard a future quarter? Or do you mean delayed purchases while Leopard looms?>>
I'm thinking Leopard is the product transition he is referring to because of the difficulties OS companies like to say there is in getting consumers to move up. I realize the transition from OS 9 to OSX went pretty quickly by industry norm but I get the sense the conservative AAPL is holding that card as its best defense against offering higher guidance.
Which also means I'm expecting Leopard to be released sometime here in C3Q, not C4Q.
Or else we're ALL in for a big surprise sometime here in C3Q.
<<I think the likely product transitions are new iPods, new desktops, and maybe some mobile device that actually has a GPS in it. Why these things should impact margins adversely is a mystery.>>
I'm thinking the product reference is to Leopard.
AT&T service really does suck!
On the east coast (GA) trying to return a call to LA that had been received on the iPhone. Have to walk all around the house to find a steady signal. One second there is NO SERVICE; a moment later FULL BARS; then MINIMAL BARS. Unbelievable.
So I finally get the call to go thru. Party answers. We communicate. In the middle of the chat CALL FAILED. Jes*s CHR*ST! I walk around to find a better signal. Call again. Make contact. Can hardly hear each other. 'I'll call back on another phone', I apologize. Hang up. Pull out my Razr (VZ). Call goes right thru. Sounds like we're in the same room.
I gotta say... this AT&T situation has GOT to improve. It truly is ridiculous.
well, i'll be adding T but i won't be eliminating VZ just yet. i have a family plan w/ VZ and that'd be a back breaker w/early termination fees so i'll maintain 'em for a while.
so there IS a 12th button on the key pad. what does that say under it? 'settings'?
<<iPhone shrinks...
in Apple ads, with the help of giant hands:>>
that was funny! now, about the size... the iPhone will be a large device, if you're used to a razor or something even smaller. but, if a blackberry or treo is what you're using now, it will hardly be any change at all. smartphones are big... there is no way around it.
I couldn't get the Safari Beta to work
I installed, rebooted, and it crashed every time I tried to use it. I had to uninstall it. I've got the last G4 15" laptop Apple made with 10.4.9
Anyone have better luck?
it's working great for me. i've been off it for a long while, using camino. but i'm back to safari now. it is VERY fast.
(MBP 2.16 1G)
too cool, dill! many thanks for the link.
JUNE 29!
AT&T iPhone commercial on 60 minutes... coming June 29!
